Bret Bielema in due course

I'm expecting him to get canned.

I'm surprised that Georgia is the #1 seed, I just don't get that. Both Georgia and Alabama won, coincidentally with the same score, so it will be interesting to see how things fall into place this Tuesday.

I think Ohio State's win over Penn State last week was such an emotional win, that they came out flat yesterday and that loss sealed their fate - no playoffs for them.

Well. I wouldn't say that just yet. If ND and Clemson drop games, then what? Washington, Oklahoma, Alabama, and then who? Miami?

I guess I could see somehow Alabama and Georgia getting into the playoff, but that will be a playoff I don't watch and would be bad for the sport.

Either way I think there's a lot of potential chaos in the last few weeks.

I expect ND to lose at least one more time, Clemson's schedule is very light, with only FSU coming up that could pose a problem.

Wisconsin, Miami have yet to lose a game. TCU and Oklahoma are both 8-1. I don't see Ohio State clawing their way back into the playoffs. Anything is possible but the odds of them doing it seem infinitesimal to me.

Yeah I don’t expect it but I think it’s more likely than anybody thinks, I guess, is my point.

The only ranking that counts is the final one, so I'm not paying that much attention to which team is on top. Bama has some very tough games ahead, and losing two and possibly three more defensive players in the LSU game makes it even harder. BTW, if you're an Alabama fan, and even if you're not, FunnyMaine's YouTube videos about how Tide fans reacted each week are really amusing.

Oh I know and they try to make such a big deal out of these rankings right now. Broadcasting on TV, and trying to make a spectacle out of it.

Nick Saban knows that his players hear about rankings and what other teams say about them. He may think that comments about how good they are amount to rat poison, but I wonder if he secretly appreciates that negative comments and lower rankings can motivate them to do better.

Oh completely, he's definitely using the #2 ranking as bulletin board material

Georgia going down. If Miami, Alabama, and Oklahoma win out who do they pick for the fourth team? That's where a Big Ten champ 11-2 Ohio State sneaks in.

I can't say that I was surprised by Georgia losing, but I am surprised at how much it was a beat down. I have to say the same thing with Notre Dame, when its a big game on the line they always seem to fail to show up.

It will be interesting to see how the rankings flesh out this week.

I think Wisconsin may sneak in there given they're undefeated but they had a weaker schedule and that may work against them.

I think Miami needs to be part of the discussion because of they destroyed the #3 team

Here's my top four guess
1. Alabamaa
2. Clemson
3. Oklahoma
4. Miami

Never really thought Georgia, or ND was very good. Don’t think Clemson is either.
Same here on all accounts, and Clemson skated through the season with fairly light season. The season ending game with Miami will tell the tale of the tape. Which team has been winning with smoke and mirrors, Miami, or Clemson.

Yup. And assuming they win out, we have Alabama, Miami, Oklahoma. Who is the 4th team?

Clemson will have two losses and just lost the conference championship.

Wisconsin or Ohio State

USC if they win the Pac-12.

So now we are picking between Clemson, Ohio State, USC with two losses, and with Ohio State and USC having just won their conference championship. Wisconsin definitely gets in if they win out.

What do you guys think? I could see the 2-loss Ohio State sneaking in for sure. It’s anout conference championships and how you’re doing right now.

I didn't think it was possible earlier and stated as much, but I can see the logic in your post. Its quite conceivable to see Ohio State sneaking in. I don't think they'll have any trouble with Illinois, though Michigan could step up their game and give them a run for their money. (I think OSU is a better team then Michigan).

Lots of interesting scenarios. If Bama beats Auburn in the Iron Bowl and Georgia in the SECC, they're in. But what if they lose to the Bulldogs in a very close game? I used to think that there was a very slight possibility that two SEC teams could be in the playoffs, but there's no way that's going to happen with Miami and Oklahoma around, among others. All this is a pretty good argument for expanding the CFP field at some point.

And how about that come from behind win by Alabama last night? I was sure they were done after the field goal kick bounced off the upright, but they managed to put together another great drive. Still, their defense is in bad shape with so many starters gone, and winning out is going to be very difficult.

I don’t think Georgia is very good - maybe I’ll eat those words in a few weeks.

But I actually think expanding is a bad idea. With it only being four teams we almost get a playoff game every weekend. The slate of ranked teams with huge playoff implications playing nearly every week is what makes the game interesting! If you make it 8 teams then the games last night don’t matter much. With only 4 teams we saw two playoff-caliber games.

You really think a two loss Ohio State will get in? Interesting.

If Alabama, Oklahoma, and Miami/Clemson win out (the underlying assumption) who else would get in?

2-loss USC in weak Pac12? Nope. They definitely don't pass the eye test.
2 Loss Clemson who just lost the championship? Nope
1-loss Miami who just lost the championship? Nope
2-loss Georgia who just lost the championship? Nope
2-loss Auburn who didn't play in the championship? Nope
2-loss Notre Dame? No way.

Or a 2-loss Ohio State that just won their conference and beat an undefeated top-5 team?

And any team that just lost their conference championship should be eliminated. You just showed in the last game of the season somebody else is better than you are. The ACC/SEC/BigTen championships are de-facto quarterfinal games this year.

Now I will say an Alabama, or Miami close loss to Georgia/Clemson makes things more complicated, but in my view those championship games if they're between top-10 teams should be treated as an elimination game. I don't want a repeat of that bs Alabama - LSU BCS championship game. What a bore.

I was watching the egg bowl last night and watched in horror the injury that befell Fitzgerald. I am appreciative that the ESPN folks broadcasting the game chose not to show replays of that injury. It looked horrible, (joe theismann horrible). I was surprised to see him on the side lines and reading that it was a dislocated ankle. Hopefully he can avoid surgery and will be back next year.
