No, in fairness, Klopp is both building and buying.

Last year, his team were excellent but not good enough to challenge for the very top positions.

They had to acquire a world class keeper - Karius's errors and lapses (and doubtless slump in confidence afterwards) at the CL final could not be allowed to cost them in the future.

They are not building through the young academy though. It’s a let’s just buy up everyone we can.

Not sure I see the difference. The academy days at West Ham are done. Lampard, Ferdinand, Cole and the like didn't bring us success. Players move on too easily these days.
[doublepost=1534079835][/doublepost]Insert expletive! Under the old offside rule that sort of thing wasn't allowed!

I see a big difference in £200 plus and £100. £200 is a bunch 2 or 3 big players. £100 could be several good players that help make the team better as a whole.

how do i ignore this thread?
thanks!

Well our best signing came on a free! But I suspect that's reflected in the wages he collects.

I'm avoiding the EPL season this year, and keep getting this thread in spy and my history.

oh the sport is excellent, i goalkept for seems like 30 years and love the UEFA cup.

Avoid the EPL? Easier to give up on oxygen!

As someone once said
Football isn't a matter of life or death. It's more important than that!

10 MR points if you know who said it (without Google!).

Yeah see I think there is a big difference. I like what y’all are building. You might bring me over .
I'm forever blowing bubbles! Been supporting them all my life. Even the dark times.
[doublepost=1534080800][/doublepost]Snodgrass on. Always rated him before we signed him. Be interesting to see how the new manager uses him.

.
the united states and nbcsports make the sport very frustrating to watch.
jose is a great fit for united, tottenham are the most fun to watch and pep sitting next to hodgson(?) was classic.
but
i might be burnt out and just tired of hearing and seeing the revolving door at stamford bridge and other venues.
about time i left the sport!

so how do i ignore this thread?
i tried everything

No, it is like assembling a jigsaw puzzle, or a mosaic.

Liverpool have been slowly and painstakingly constructing a team, and good luck to them.

Easily.

Pinch your nostrils, avert your eyes, and resist temptation.

Indeed.

And, with good scouting, and a keen eye, one can still find excellent young payers; look at what Leicester found in the lower leagues in France - for next to nothing - less than a decade ago.

Exercise some self control.

But then why are fans cry about teams like Man City and Real Madrid?

Which is why Spurs may struggle. But being an Arsenal fan, that might bring a small smile!
(Actually I appreciate you are not the typical Arsenal supporter who loves to see Spurs struggle).

But I'm more opptermistic for this coming season than I have been for a while!

No, I think that this Spurs team - excellent though they are - and the backbone of England - have probably come as far as they can, though (and yes, not typical for an Arsenal supporter, but I cannot abide that sort of mindless pettiness that sometimes comes with football, that sort of abdication of objectivity, I'd love to see them win a trophy, just to show that what they have done, and with such élan and flair, can yield some sort of fair-minded dividend - that the 'good guys' can triumph).

The cost of the "new" stadium will curtail their spending, and I am not sure where they can expand the team.

Unless injury strikes, I think a top four place is the best that they can hope for.

They are not building through the young academy though. It’s a let’s just buy up everyone we can.

No, it is not.

It is carefully identifying what needs the team has, and identifying players to address those needs.

That is building.

Not sure I quite understand what you are asking.

It may sound callous, but I don't give two hoots for Real Madrid at the moment, and am absolutely - almost militantly - indifferent to what they do, (that is, until I am obliged to take notice of them).

I feel the same way about many of the EPL teams. Especially Liverpool. Only reason they are on my map is because of this thread.

Well yes. RM are the top team in a two team league.
Liverpool are one of a top four really in England.
They had a weakness last year in their goalkeeper. They have addressed that.
Keita seems like a good signing though.

They did address it. My point is that RM buy but also build from within. Their youth academy is actually pretty good. They really didn’t buy this summer. Well not yet. They are going with the youth and quality they already have.

From a RM point of view I'm looking forward to seeing Gareth Bale getting a good run as the main man. Think he might fill the void.

Oh I can’t wait! I just hope he avoids injury. In the preseason, he has been outstanding. I think we might be a better team as a whole this year.

If you don't have the quality coming through at your academy (and not every year, or, even every decade, will yield a crop along the lines of the Class of 92 for United), you have little option but to try to buy in.

My point is that Klopp's purchases are well thought through, well researched, and are the product of a lot of work, rather than quick fixes. Thus, I don't fault him.

In fact, like Guardiola, his is a long term strategy, and his team is showing clear improvement year after year.

The instructive and striking contrast here is with Mourinho, who has spent a veritable fortune but who has still failed to build a team.

Now, on that we can agree.

I never could abide CR, and I would love to see Gareth Bale take this opportunity to show what he is capable of.

Agreed. The opportunity is in his hands.

Oh I don’t disagree with you at all. I think Klopp is doing something special. I just don’t like the Liverpool fans that complain about Madrid suddenly being ok with Liverpool completely blowing up the transfer market the past two years. You can’t be ok with one team doing it and not another. Maybe they can’t get the same world class players that Madrid, City, and Barca get, but they did spend a ton of money.

Liverpool dominated the midfield today. The third goal was clearly offside, but I think it is fair to say Liverpool did more than enough to win the game.

West Ham have made more changes in the offseason than Liverpool, starting with a managerial change. Pellegini is trying to drill the team to his system, so I think they need more time to bed in. I expect them to improve going forward, once the manager has more time with the players.

Liverpool look to be picking up right where they left off.

Watching Arsenal-Man City...Man City are definitely getting the better of it so far. Shame to see Maitland-Niles have to go off, I hope he hasn't picked up a serious injury.
