The 2020-2021 Football Thread

Columbus is back on top the Eastern Conference with a 3-0 win in the Hell is Real derby with Cincy.

The club invited 1,500 fans into the stadium for the match, in compliance with state regulations but against the recommendation of the Columbus Department of Health.

I am torn on this - I don't think 1,500 fans in an outdoor stadium designed for ~20,000 constitutes a serious risk if all best practices for social distancing, mask usage, and hand washing are followed. On the other hand, if it were my call I would be very reluctant to take that responsibility at this time. And I am skeptical that the fans most eager to watch in person will be sufficiently rigorous in observing social distancing etc. The US is awash in COVID-19 cases, so the risk of exposure here is higher than almost anywhere else.

Columbus are doing this 1) because they can, and 2) because they feel compelled to do this in order to keep the season ticket holders happy.

Matteo Guendouzi literally calling Arsenal out on Twitter, to let him back in the fold.
Interesting. After all, the boy can play football. Here's hoping he can apologize and get back to kicking a piece of leather...

It's been clear for some time that Arteta doesn't rate him for some reason, and doesn't want him. So those fans who love Arteta and are furious over this transfer are engaging in a bit of cognitive dissonance. Sometimes managers and players just don't work together well.

My sense is that while Mikel Arteta does not doubt his (Guendouzi's) ability, he does, however, deplore his attitude, most recently expressed in that disgraceful exchange with Neil Maupay.

It's always disappointing when a manager and player have a personal falling out. It usually means somebody has got to go, and that costs the club money and generates negative headlines.

Please know. There’s just no need is there?

Here I’m feeling quite apprehensive about the new season. Whilst everyone seems to be bringing in new blood, West Ham have bought no one. I know we ended last season well, but with an injury or two we will struggle. Meanwhile teams around us like Newcastle have spent big. Brought in quality players.

Touche'.
Alas, here's hoping a resolution of sorts can present itself, ahead of the start of the new season.

It's going to be great for the memes though!

I read that United actually won't take the pitch in the dazzle shorts and socks — the top is paired with white shorts and socks — but they're available for consumers to purchase. Imagine being a full kit w***er in that kit! Yikes.

Again, I'm not sure why United is going with the dazzle camo motif when it would more clearly suit Liverpool and their whole maritime history.

A lot of Liverpool natives are restless over the lack of transfer activity and I have heard some unwarranted criticisms of the ownership. To those I say:
  • We have a world class first team and reasonably good (if less than our rivals') depth right now.
  • We have some very promising youngsters who may take on first team roles.
  • FSG needs to be applauded, not criticized, for operating within its means and investing in infrastructure like stadium and training ground upgrades.
  • FSG have invested money in keeping our existing players happy rather than bringing in a raft of new signings. I think this is wise.
  • FSG's commercial deals have thus far increased revenue.
  • Thiago is a great player, I'd love to have him at Liverpool - but not getting him is not a disaster if it means we continue to operate in a financially sustainable way.
Man Utd, Man City, and Chelsea will ALWAYS have more money because they are owned by Gulf monarchies, Russian oligarchs, and in the case of Man Utd they went whole-hog commercial AND had their best all-time manager at the perfect moment in the 1990s and got a massive financial head start on everyone else.

I don't want Liverpool to operate on those debt-laden or sugar daddy models, but it means that Liverpool will not be winning titles at the same rate as those clubs. I am OK with that. It also means Liverpool will be less likely to go bust or accrue massive debt. I want the club to still be here, in good shape, long after I'm dead.

I love dazzle camo - just not on a football kit.

It’s a piece of software that decides what they wear for the games.
PL rules state each kit must be worn a number of times.

Madness. I had to scramble this morning to get my fantasy squad together while navigating the minefield of teams not playing in GW1.
Shhhhh! I’m hoping the other people in my league haven’t spotted that! If the load up on Manchester City and Utd I can get a free week!

It's going to be an interesting season for a lot of reasons. The only prediction I can make that I feel has any value is that we won't see one team running way with the title like we did last season.

I've been meaning to join the fantasy league but it's been a ludicrously busy week in Real Life™. Hoping to sneak in there before the start.
