Juventus fan here.

I think this goes well beyond just football, Italian media have been reporting for years about a feud inside the owners' family, basically two branches fighting over control and inheritance.

This makes Junventus' frantic clinging to the Super League idea so much more understandable. For them it was potentially a golden ticket out of financial ruin. But of course it would not have solved the underlying issues at the club, so even that would have been merely a Band Aid.

Unsurprising that Cronaldo tried to claim the goal; he's all about himself, not the team. He'd rather cheat a team-mate of the glory, than be a man and admit he didn't touch it. Sums him up. Also unsurprising that no big European teams want him or his massive ego.

I doubt Eusebio ever had his national team petitioning FIFA and 'presenting evidence' to award him a dodgy goal just so he could match some record...shame he'll be overshadowed by Crispy Ronaldo now, at least in pure numbers.

...and Qatar seal their place in history as the worst World Cup host side of all time. Great Job! Don't worry, when Infantino awards the 2030 World Cup to South Ossetia, Qatar will be bumped off this pedestal.

The World Cup has been interesting so far; I have seen many friends here from various countries, the upsets, and being able to see my USA team in person, something I haven’t been able to do in years. Today’s match is going to be very interesting. The big surprise today was seeing some Iranians waving American flags, never thought I see that!

You over there? You’re at home less often than Man Utd win titles these days! 😃
Enjoy and stay safe.

I agree with you.

The Super League idea is (was) the European clubs' poor answer to a problem they know they have but refuse to admit. They know the problem is money, duh, there aren't many solutions to that problem:
  • increase revenue;
  • finding a generous patron;
  • keep spending in check;
The only way they know to increase revenue is by increasing ticket prices and trying to squeeze more money out of TV rights, either by forcing the leagues to sell TV rights at a higher price or by completely screwing smaller clubs out of the TV rights money distribution.

In order to have a generous patron the owners need to either sell the clubs or going back to the old ways of spending like there's no tomorrow.

The solution, in my opinion, should be the third one, but to keep spending in check you need a set of rules common to every league in UEFA, like a hard salary cap - but I remember I read somewhere it technically is against some European law - based on net salaries, because, of course, every country has a different tax system, abolish transfer fees and only allow trades or signing players once their contracts are expired, more financial oversight also limiting the money you can spend to buy players from outside the UEFA leagues, based on the club's financial situation and, of course, strict rules that are strictly enforced.

Naturally, no amount of financial oversight or good management can save a club if said club signs poor players or managers and pays them a lot more than they're worth.

USA are through to a last 16 meeting with the Dutch (which is surely where their campaign will end).

The USMNT lacks a forward or forwards capable of leading the line and finishing chances, and unsurprisingly this team's biggest problem is scoring goals. Iran are also not a freeflowing offensive unit, but USA should have been able to translate more of their play into a second goal at least...Against a Dutch team who will out-possess the USA and have VVD keeping things tight at the back our chances of scoring in open play, or, indeed, any play apart from a penalty, are small to say the least. And the Dutch will score at least one. We showed resilience against England though, and if we play like that we should be able to make it a close match at least.

But a last 16 appearance is a very good result for this young squad - the pressure will be on at the next World Cup, but right now I feel we have done what we set out to do.

Wales are done after a somewhat underwhelming campaign - Bale and Ramsey have the skill but are too old and not playing regularly, and the rest of the squad are two steps below their level.

As for England - Senegal look quite good and it's agonizing to think what they could have done with Mane healthy. England should win this game and will be under pressure to convince, not just squeak by.

O ye of little faith...
Correct. ;)

I’ll take talent over faith every day of the week. Still, USA have coalesced into a good side, better than what many feared at the start of the qualifying campaign. But we don’t score enough and many of the players are relatively inexperienced. The good news is this side will age together now and enter the next tournament as a throughly experienced group at the peak of their careers.

Ehh, I think USMNT have a pretty fair chance against the Oranje. If Ecuador can run most of a match against them, I'm sure Team USA can, as well.

Conversely, England will have a tough test against Senegal. Gareth Southgate will have to get his selection right, but I'd think that Rice, Henderson and Bellingham can deal with them where Ecuador's midfielders couldn't.

Idrissa Gueye will be suspended for the England match, which will be a significant loss for Senegal. He did an incredible job of stopping Ecuador from attacking yesterday.

Even without him, England will have to play quicker through the midfield to get through them. They are quick, strong, and organized off the ball.

Poland anti football team went through to last 16. That sucker punch from Saudi Arabia and total heartbreak for Mexico.

Tunisia was on the brink of going through to last 16 as well lol.

One crazy day of football.

In my opinion best one so far.

Neither Mexico or Poland were that great. This is the first time Mexico hasn't made the knockout rounds in a long, long time. Poland is a two-player team: their #1 and their #9, and that's it. France should have an easy enough time, either way.

Personally, I would have liked to have seen Mexico qualify, especially at the expense of an uninspiring Poland.

I'm not optimistic, though the Dutch are not really playing to their level right now. My biggest worry is scoring. I think we should be able to keep things tight if we play well, but without Pulisic, or with an injured-but-playing Pulisic, we are going to be pretty blunt.

I'm disappointed that Saudia Arabia scored...Mexico, who love a niggly foul, going out on an inferior 'fair play' status to Poland would have been sweet.

I lost count of how many chances Lukaku squandered against Croatia. At some point it became hilarious, then devolved to tragedy. The man is not known for his clinical finishing (and not just at Man Utd), but today takes the cake. Morocco actually won their group and Croatia deservedly also go through. Unlike Belgium, they've refreshed their squad with some good younger players, and Modric keeps on truckin'.

Morocco have a decent squad but I would never have expected them to win that group. Canada and Belgium both substantially underperformed.

Belgium definitely appear to have hit this World Cup with low morale and with fans and the media on their backs. Not a recipe for producing their best performances. So from that perspective the outcome is not very surprising - but still frustrating considering the talent they have in their squad.

Croatia, on the other hand, are fundamentally a tough side, physically and mentally. Not only that, but they have some truly skillful players. While they were not the second best team in the last World Cup, their appearance in the final was not a fluke.

Profligate, and the sort of profligacy - and profligate waste of chances - that is punished at this level.

A few days ago, I read a rather interesting - and thoughtful - interview with Kevin de Bruyne (in the Guardian/Observer) where (among other things) he was quite emphatic (if calm) about the fact that, in his view, Belgium would not shine at the World Cup, and that he did not expect them to do well.

Japans done it but but but and and and i dont care tiny bit if that goal was controversial. The hypocrite Germans are out.

Auf wiedersehen, Deutschland! Seems that Timo Werner was a big miss for them, as their finishing was very poor when it really counted.

What an achievement by Japan, beating Germany and Spain and topping their group. However, it looks like 2nd place Spain has the easier road in the knockout rounds.
