This makes for a lopsided bracket...Portugal will get another easy match. ugh. Someone please knock them out (Come on Switzerland!! Am I actually rooting for the Swiss? LOL.). Though it looks like Ronny has burned yet another bridge for a post-substitution hissy fit and gotten himself benched for the next match. He really is a silly sausage.

Portugal are a much more dangerous team with Ronaldo not playing. He did them a favor.

[EDIT: So naturally, Ronaldo's replacement in the starting XI scored a hat trick today and the rest of the team played wonderfully fluid, attacking football.]

The people who have been banging on for months (years?) that an elderly Ronaldo makes the teams he plays in (Juve, Man Utd, Portugal) worse have, I think, been emphatically validated.

You could never tell it from Portuguese media but a lot of those people are indeed Portuguese tired for several years of having the National team almost highjacked and seeing Silva, Fernandes and others forced to cater for you know who.

And all these years having that person representing what the Portuguese people are is just the cherry on top.

I can believe that. I was in Lisbon three years ago and you couldn’t get away from him - his face was everywhere, on billboards, posters, merchandise…

Cronaldo was past it a few years ago tbh. The main problem with him is that he likes to have the ball given to him so he can get the glory. I've always felt he was a bit overrated and hyped up; in the Pl, he was very good, but generally against crap teams. Outside of Old Trafford, I think many people saw him as a bit of a show pony. He'd often go missing in big games against the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool or Chelsea, and in the CL, he only seemed to realy shine in the early group stages, again against weaker teams, yet in the latter stages against the top guns, would often be found wanting. At Real, he flourished cos the team was built around giving HIM the ball all the time, and again; the Spanish league bar Barca and Atletico is pretty poor. Yes, he has had spectacular games, but generally only when he's been surrounded by top players. He's never quite been the game changer that Messi is. And in today's high pressing game, he doesn't get the time on the ball he wants, and he isn't prepared to track back and defend like the game demands. He hasn't got the speed he used to, and he's lost that edge of sharpness he once had. But his real undoing now, is his ego. He'd have done himself a huge favour by retiring after Juve, and going on to be a game 'ambassador' or something. Or just going back to Sporting, where he could enjoy his last years being adored and get the attention he craves. Fact is that no one needs him any more. And that is the biggest problem his ego will ever face.

Just what I did not want to hear, and a very good reason not to hold the World Cup in the middle of a PL season.

Gabriel Jesus is out (a serious knee injury - more serious than first thought - but which has been operated on successfully according to reports), possibly for up to three months.

Yes I read that and thought you wouldn’t be pleased. My own fear is that Rice comes back injured. He didn’t train today as he is ill.

No, not pleased at all.

A very serious blow, for he has really played a significant role in our success to date this season - and this is exactly what I dreaded when this WC started; in truth - not that I was ever much engaged by the competition - I am a lot less so now.

Actually, I am really annoyed by this.

Now, it was not that I ever thought we could actually win the PL, (although we have managed to remain ahead of the colossal behemoth that is Manchester City, leading from the front, the hard way) - but, I did think that we could comfortably challenge for second or third place. This will now be a lot harder.

It was always going to be hard for Arsenal to sustain their form with a smaller squad than Man City. Man City could lose Haaland, for instance, and most of us would still see them as favorites for the title. But Arsenal don’t have the depth to deal with losing Jesus and maintain a title challenge.

Luckily you’re getting Xhaka back in one piece.

You’ll just need to strengthen in the January transfer window. I hear there is a promising young talent available on a free. Portuguese. Got a house in Manchester. Good for team morale!

Well, he is no longer young, and he is no longer the talent he was. Tempus fugit, and all that.

Actually, leaving increasing age and dwindling talent aside, it is his attitude, arrogance, insatiable ego and narcissism that irk me most.

Nevertheless, even if a fit of insanity overtook Arsenal, the cost of his wages alone - and we spent years jettisoning expensive deadwood - would deter would be enthusiasts for that gentleman from Portugal.

These days, burning bridges seems to be what he excels at, first at Manchester United, and more recently, with the Portuguese national team.

This is true, and has been true all season.

And agree about Haaland.

However, Gabriel Jesus really had a positive influence on the way the team functioned on the pitch, he made a difference for the better - and, although he is supposed to be out for three months - I imagine that we will miss him.

If you read Portuguese you would love the recent days best of in the news.
My favourite is a fellow who proclaimed we would rather see the National team lose than not having Ronaldo in the starting 11.
You can't make this stuff up.
But for some context a recent poll (before the latest game) in a sports paper resulted in 70% which certainly became happy with the Switzerland game 11. Of course online polls are what they are but those were the results.

I think we will miss Rice more than you will miss Jesus. Sounds like he is gone in the summer 🥲

You needn't worry. Time will tell where Ronaldo ends up, but there is no rush of serious clubs looking to sign him. Going to the nothing-burger Saudi league is a win-win; he gets a massive payout, and we can dismiss him from our thoughts and conversation.

Don't worry, when you sell your soul to petro-states, they come get you.

Well, yes, for "death is a natural part of life", as the Chief Executive of the Qatar World Cup, Nasser al-Khater, shrugged when asked earlier today about a (Filipino) migrant's death at the tournament.

While it is clear that the organisers of the World Cup place little value on human life, (or some human lives), it would leave less of a bad taste if those in the soul-selling business were to set as high a price as possible before they decided to close such sordid and squalid sales.

The Qataris have pulled this tourney off with near-total success as far as their intentions are concerned, which means we can look forward to years of listening to callously glib supervillain-style one-liners like this from the same shower of crooks.

It's depressing how many people out there in Qatar, including journalists who should know better, have been duped by the gleaming hotels and the 'nice' atmosphere inside the carefully-controlled stadia. Turns out, you can fool most people some of the time, and that's all Qatar needed to get their money's worth.

It is important, in the interest of fairness, to admit that this has been a good tournament on the pitch. That does not, of course, in any way mitigate the corrupt nature of its being awarded in the first place, the appalling human rights issues that dog the host nation, or the duplicitous behavior of the organizers.

I can't cheer for Brazil because of Neymar. I just find him too annoying on and off the pitch. But he's a tremendous talent and he's probably just won this match for Brazil.

Croatia showed incredible toughness and should have scored just minutes before Brazil did. A real shame, though of course the objectively better team looks set to progress.

EDIT: Not so fast, Croatia equalize and now it's PKs....oh, I have to root for Alisson but to see Brazil's tears would also be hilarious....

Modric again dragging his team back from the dead. Is there any team better at pens?

Wow there goes my prediction of Brazil trophy winners

Marquinhos will need some counselling. Deflected the equaliser in and misses the vital spot kick
