Two sendings-off in tonight's Newcastle v Liverpool game? Emotions will run high and decision-making will be compromised. On the other hand, it could be a classic.

Well, two yellows for 'Pool, one for Newcastle, and Gordon, Newcastle's provocateur-in-chief, has already gotten himself sent off for going through the back of VvD.

And that's just the first 45....

This very thought has crossed my mind, as well; actually, this thought crossed my mind even prior to the casualties we suffered yesterday, and, also as a result of last week's game.

Havertz, Odegaard and Saka all sidelined through injury already......and the season has barely started.

Another name to ponder is Julian Alvarez, whom I always rated highly as a player.

Agree completely re the first three names.

Actually, I think that Kiwior is a very good player, - well able to step up and meet the required standard should others yet limp off suffering injuries - and I would regret losing him; my personal view is that we should retain him, for this season - (or first half of the season) to add some strength in depth.

Re Jesus, he had one excellent season with us, and has been missing quite a bit as a result of injuries; actually, I don't think that he has ever fully recovered - physically or in terms of confidence - from the injury he suffered at the last World Cup.

Having said that, he does tend to lift the team whenever he appears, and I would be sorry to see him depart. However, even with a full recovery (itself unlikely, but not impossible) increasingly, he will have become a fringe player, a luxury player, an optional extra, and not a core member of the team, someone whose name automatically springs to mind when compiling a list of first team players.

Takehiro Tomiyasu is another player I was very sorry to see leave - a terrific player when available and fit, a wonderful role model, but dreadfully susceptible to injury.
Only two games into the league and Arsenal have already lost 3 players due to injury. Are Arsenal players made of glass? If their injuries are a result of them playing in pre-season then it questions if teams should be having a pre season at all, especially if it can result in players bodies getting weakened due to pre season and then when playing league games their bodies become even weaker due to the pressure league games put on the body.

Or it's a case the medical team has failed and not conditioned those 3 players bodies properly to stand the rigours of football.

Sometimes it's simply bad luck. though I do think Saka has been overworked.

Before the match I was expecting a scored draw...Newcastle are hard to beat, playing at home and super motivated. When the score hit 2-2 I figured that was it, a remarkable comeback and 'moral victory' for NUFC.

But Liverpool are very strong finishers, and I think Newcastle's cranking up the emotional temperature to white-hot may have ultimately backfired.

16-year-old Rio Ngumoha, however, will never forget today's match. I doubt anyone was expecting that debut.

Liverpool are leaking goals I hope Arsenal get a result at Anfield on Sunday.
I expect Arsenal will be a tougher test - very solid defensively, and yes, Liverpool can’t afford to leak two goals every match.

Newcastle are a good side, but Slot will not be happy about winning at the death and having to score three to do it after being 2-0 up.

Kiwior i'd also like to stay, but he deserves to play so i don't blame him wanting to leave

Alvarez will be almost impossible to do but i'd also love him at the Emirates to replace Jesus

Re- LFC. Too much firepower for NUFC who are ironically blunted without Isak and Gordon
I have zero expectations next week. But they've conceded 6 goals in 3 games which could be something.
Conversely it looks like they are full of goals...coming even from teenagers.

On plus side this has happened very early on and there'll still be the return fixture at the Emirates.

For now I'm just glad we can mount something of a challenge compared to last season. Gyokeres, Madueke, Eze sounds a lot better than Martinelli, Merino, Trossard and vibes.

I think Liverpool have a slight edge over the Gunners in open play. But, as we all know, Arsenal excel at set pieces, and that was a weakness for Liverpool against Newcastle today. I expect that to be something Arsenal will specifically be looking to exploit. From a Liverpool perspective, creating early momentum and scoring first could keep things more open which I think plays to the Red's strengths. More space for the wingbacks if Arsenal need to chase the game. With Mo buzzing around and Ekitike in the middle as a target. But it should be a tight match.

I think Liverpool were fortunate not to go down to 10 men themselves, with the Konate push from behind which could have been a second yellow card. Instead they go and score in extra time to snatch the win. Fortunate indeed. I do think Slot needs to work on the defending, at 2-0 up against 10 men they should have been able to close it out.

In a post match interview, that I linked to after the opening game of the season, Slot discussed the issues at the club, and the style of play that might be seen this season.
There is so much pushing and shoving in football at the moment, and it seems to be somewhat accepted, and not looked into. In my view, players should not be touched, unless a player is actively attempting to 'intercept' the ball, and that contact should only be 'running into/colliding', not grabbing the shirts, shorts or man-handling.

I understand your sentiment, but I fear that what you are after is unenforceable, even with all the cameras we have today. Football is a contact sport, and always has been. The way the laws are written, contact alone is never automatic grounds for a foul (not even in the case of handball). But the devil is in the details, and rule-makers and refs have spent the last 150+ years trying to find the right balance.

Players often make contact with opponents to ensure they are marking their man whilst looking elsewhere. They bump into each other while running in parallel or trying to cut inside/outside each other off the ball. They are in a scrum during free kicks and corners. I would argue that defending actually becomes impossible if players aren't allowed to even touch opponents off the ball. If they tried to impose a 'no touching at all unless contesting the ball' rule, the amount of stoppages would balloon far beyond what we see now. And the amount of open play time from the total 90 is already low-ish.

I think the contact nature of the sport, and the fuzzy line between legal and illegal contact, is an essential quality of the game. I doubt it can be further simplified, and it also provides scope for human refereeing - which I believe is another essential quality of the game.

Read an interesting article on the most valuable teams in the world. Based on sale value not what the team paid for the players.

  1. Real Madrid
  2. Arsenal
  3. Manchester City
  4. PSG
  5. Chelsea
  6. Barcelona
  7. Liverpool
  8. Manchester United.
A few surprises in there, but only in the order.

We are definitely the underachievers in this table! Well us and Manchester Utd!

A good sign for the future for Arsenal.

I remember when we used to have a great academy. Oh well.

Another damming report for West Ham.

Not surprised to see Brighton up there. A lot of good business in recent years. Brighton fans obviously wish they’d kept them I’m sure.

Some surprising results in the Champions League… where the small Kazakhstan club Almaty went through over Celtic, and the Cypriot team Pafos over Red Star Belgrade. So some smaller, unusual teams in the group stage. They’ll probably get thumped by the bigger teams, but amazing that they made it all the way through the qualifiers.

Im happy that Leeds got dumped out on penalties
Not as happy as I am I bet...

Pleasantly surprised to find out that I could watch the match on paramount when I got home from work.

The cup match was pretty good. Hovrath was cheated with an own goal. I got a migraine and had to go to bed at the break. Woke up to find we won on Pens and Hovrath saved two of those!

UP THE MASSIVE!
