I had a 17 Pro Max delivered on launch day, but it’s 2 weeks later and I had to return it because of the speaker noise issue when charging. That was a little too disappointing to keep the device. While I still think the Pro/Pro Max is the “best” iPhone you can buy, the Air just feels so much better to use.

I really wanted to like the Pro Max, because it is such a beast of a phone and I am ordinarily a spec chaser. Thermals, battery, cameras, performance, it was all top of the line. I would have kept it if it wasn’t for the speaker issue.

Of course this is subjective, but the Pro Max does not seem to be designed for use with one hand. I know some people can only use it with two hands. It’s doable, manageable, but not pleasant. I was often using it flat on a table and hunching over to face the display, almost like it was a mini tablet.

The design of the Pros this year was also pretty disappointing, for someone who has always appreciated the elegant, minimalist design of Apple products. I wouldn’t have wanted to use it without a case. Not because of “scratchgate” or “aluminum sucks” but the glass cutout on the back is really what bothered me. I wish they could have color matched the glass better on the Silver model or made the unibody in a different way.

The Air on the other hand is so sleek, the Space Black is so classy and this phone is just beautiful. I realized I really don’t need all the cameras and battery life on the Pro Max. All I do nowadays is text, call, email, and browse the web, barely taking photos here and there.

The Air is simply a little joy to use for this average use case. I don’t understand why so many people are trying to hate on this phone and point out every single one of its flaws over and over. I think this is actually a sign that Apple did something unique and new, which usually bothers people who are used to seeing more of the same.

You're having the experience of a Mini fan. Savor it. The grass is greener, and the people are friendlier.

No speaker noise issues on my 17PM while charging, but I am happy for you that you got the Air and it meets all your needs. I was playing with it in store when I picked up my 17PM and I quite liked it, just couldn’t compromise on 1 camera.

I heard it when I was charging and held up the bottom speaker (left side) up to my ear.

Good advice on getting what you want. Every time I hear someone on a forum, this one included or on the YouTube saying “ this is the phone you should get or upgrade to“ “This is the best color you should purchase , etc “ I can care less about what they suggest. I will buy what I want.

I also get a kick out of those that post, “what color is the best or which iPhone should I purchase”. It always baffles me. Why would anybody ask a stranger on what I should do or not do? I always purchased what I want or need after looking at the specs. Simple.

There's discussion but I'm not seeing much hate. Everyone pretty much agrees it's lovely to look at and hold but that it has compromises to achieve it. People disagree on how much those compromises affect them. That's about it

My personal opinion is... the "compromises" are not actual compromises. Air is basically a "super" version of the iPhone 6 from a decade ago. Back when we used to have thinner and lighter phones. We have actually "compromised" on thickness all in the name of more battery life and more cameras. Sort of like going backward too far into the early 2000s when we had bricks for cell phones.

I guess some are okay with that but I've always thought for decades that as technology progresses, we should get thinner, lighter and more capable devices. But we've hit a plateau. We can either go backward with thickness and weight to try and have more capabilities or we can have thin and light with less capabilities. Looks like the "thicker and more cameras" camp is winning in reality.

That is fine, but I think a lot of younger folks forget Apple's golden years were with thinner, lighter and smaller phones that barely lasted through just one day. The cameras were just workable back then. Now people get a single 48MP sensor and they're thinking "it's not enough", which is comical to me.

I mean there’s a popular thread about the thermals saying all iPhone Air buyers are going to “regret their decision”… sounds like some people are definitely hating or at least upset over a phone other people enjoy.

is it forced?

While Apple hasn’t revealed how well the iPhone 17 series is selling, it seems that, broadly speaking, it’s a hit, which is perhaps no surprise given that the company has freshened up the design and introduced a whole new model in the form of the iPhone Air.

But in fact, it’s the iPhone Air that’s seemingly the weak link in this year's lineup, according to analysts at Morgan Stanley (via MacRumors).

is it forced?

It is forced.

This is a different situation compared to the Mini where... Youtubers and analysts did not go out of their way to "predict" or "be concerned" or mention "red flags" about the Mini line. Everyone back then universally understood that the Mini line was niche and its audience was unique.

No such consideration for Air. Go find me one article about Air that does not contain the word "compromise" or "red flag" or "concern". Basically, tech Youtubers, analysts, armchair engineers everywhere... etc... are ALL "concerned" about Air one way or another. All of them trying to pick faults with the device and really trying to question "who is it really for?"

To add insult to injury, Apple has barely marketed Air at all. The Air line in stores also does not stand out as much since it's basically either black or silver, whereas all of the other lines are much more colorful and will stand out.

What's even more sad is that... this is basically a reflection of the upcoming folding iPhone. I do want one but it will again be faced with all of these criticisms about what "compromises" Apple has to make to bring it to reality, and of course people will again be "concerned" about its supposed capabilities.

This is my view as well. If these characteristics are "compromises," then it also makes sense to consider the Pro's extra weight, thickness, and feel to be compromises of a different sort. And for me, those are more significant compromises than anything I have encountered with the Air.

To put it somewhat differently, the Air is the closest thing that Apple has ever made to a perfect phone *for me*. I want a phone that looks and feels great, is fast, and that has a beautiful screen, a good camera, and all-day battery life. The Air is all of that. Would I also like a better speaker and a wide-angle lens? Well sure, but only if I don't have to compromise on the look and feel. For my priorities, Apple nailed this one.

I still may spring for the rumored foldable phone next year, trading one set of attributes for another. I can't say one way or the other right now. But in this year's lineup -- and even compared to any prior iPhones -- the Air is my strong favorite.

Low sales numbers justify hating the phone? People won’t buy it in droves like the Pros, sure, but why go around bashing on it if you don’t even want to use it?

Do you buy a certain model of phone because you know it sold the most or because it’s the best one for you?

Average people don’t think the Air is the best one for them, oh well. I could not care less what phone they use.

Honestly I’m starting to think all the hate has been because these people secretly want the Air but they could never “justify” the purchase to themselves.

Ah yes the iPhone 6 I had one it was a okay phone but 16 gigs got filled up fast and the air remained me of it lol I have a 16 and it is enough for me the air is okay seen one at Walmart on display and very thin indeed but only one speaker would be a deal breaker for me I enjoy having two cereal speakers on my phone to watch and listen to!

I’ve seen a lot of hate/negative comments towards the Air on here and on Reddit.

Instead of focusing on the negatives like the mono speaker and the battery life. Why not focus on the positives instead?!

I like my Air. 😎

It’s the best iPhone release since the iPhone X

People say whatever they need to justify their decisions. That’s human and we all do it. There’s no hate.

In particular, pro users are conflicted about the phone because it’s the best form factor but it is missing a ton of stuff. One speaker in 2025 is wack no matter what. There’s an entire thread about how some people think their Air is defective, when that’s just how a tiny speaker sounds. And former pro owners don't want to become like mini owners...like a group of golem creatures whispering my precious lol. Unfortunately sales informs strategy and the Air will probably be scrapped.

And yea I picked the air this time. Feels great :D

I played with one a bit and it was super cool. I just require the cameras of the pro max, as well as the battery life, so I’m not the target market for the air. But it seems like a fantastic phone and I’d definitely have one if photo/video wasn’t my favorite hobby.

Yawn.

I don't hate the iPhone 17 Air. I just don't like it - so I didn't buy it.

Get what you want, it doesn't affect me what you own. If you're happy with what you got, that's great. But again, it doesn't affect me whether you're happy with it or not. Nor does what anyone think about what I own bother me. It wasn't their money that bought it and they have no say in it.

Quite frankly, I don't care what anyone owns. It's none of my business and I have no say in what you or anyone else wants to get. And vice-versa.

I have nothing against people liking the Air — during the rumor period I was looking forward to it myself — but there are also good reasons to not to. Trying to generalize one’s subjective feelings to everyone doesn’t work in either direction.
