That phone is a mess… the os is a joke and it is having all kinds of problems.
It is not even close to Apple. One company creates its own os from the ground up and has the best user experience of any company, the other copies even the name, destroys the Android os, can’t turn a profit even with massive state subsidies, and can’t outsell Apple even in China.

But do consider this: the majority of those who have ever owned an iPhone should have been okay with battery life in iPhone X and Xs some years ago.

Air factually lasts like twice as long as iPhone X/Xs.

But suddenly it is no longer enough battery life for "most people"?

I think that's the more realistic question to ask, rather than the hypothetical scenarios you are thinking of. How did people even work with these past iPhones?

Mind, we used to have phones that would last weeks... back before the first iPhone came out. Why did we not complain about the loss of 80% of battery life back then when everyone started switching over to "smart" phones? Why complain now?
Why would one need to go back years in the past to size up something from the present ?

It’s like saying that if an electric train from the 1960s could manage only 90k/h and we have a new one in 2025 that can do 95k/h we should consider ourselves blessed and be content…..Or life expectancy in 1930s was say 55 and someone in 2025 dies at age 65, he’s ahead of the curve and we should not be complaining.

Sorry, that’s an illogical take on things.

Okay, sure we can talk about the price-to-feature ratio for the millionth time.. Yes, it’s missing a few big things.

Maybe… just maybe… that’s the point though. Because the things that are missing make it lighter? And the point of the phone is to be light. Not feature packed. Not a value or budget phone. Not even meeting things we expect like stereo. Those things are non-essential to the point of this phone.

The point is weight, feel, design, thinness. A luxurious hand-feel with a pro chip.

Like how many times does it have to be spelled out?
So you get your iphone 17 air, and in certain regions Apple will also use social engineering to convince you to buy their battery. Now your phone becomes thicker and heavier. Why not just get the 17 Pro Max?

Apple and friends know phones are treated like heavy duty appliances and only the admittedly loud tech community will call them out on this. But it's a genius move by them since they convince people to give them more money. Now combine this with the price increase in Europe and..., you get the idea.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max doesn't have this problem, nor do cheaper androids e.g Poco X7 Pro and Realme GT7 and the S25 Edge to a lesser extent.

I’m not buying the battery bank, the battery lasts as long as I need it and perfectly lines up with my use.

I got my Air at launch. To me, I always feel like im missing something when using it. I don't know if it's how thin and light it is that it. really feels like im not holding anything compared to the chunkier phones? I just ordered a Pro and am picking it up tomorrow from the Apple Store. I'll use that for a little and see which I like better to use until the 18's come out.
If you don't know what you are missing, that is a red flag that you really aren't missing anything. You are simply struggling with muscle memory of the heavier, thicker phone.

I'd only need a battery pack maybe 1-2 weeks in a year. The rest of the time, the Air would still have plenty of charge left at the end of the day (it's usually at 50-60% when I go to bed).

I prefer to have a lighter device for the 96% of the time I use the phone and just carry a power bank for that remaining 4% when I need to use the phone more heavily.

Mind, I returned the Air because it's a tad too big for my hands. However, I have no complaints with regards to battery life.

An Apple fan's perspective on the thinnest phone from six months ago: a phone that can transfer files between itself and an iPhone, serve as a portable tiny Mac, and remotely control the Mac...and so on. Well, Apple has a long way to go. Oh, no need to carry a battery pack, by the way.
And, the AI, well not the Apple (un)Intelligence. :)

Air + MagSafe battery may be as thick as 17 Pro Max but... Air only needs to strap a battery on when it's running low. The regular use case for Air for most folks is to just have the phone in one pocket and MagSafe battery in some other pocket. That is if anyone even needs that much battery.

But 17 Pro Max is always heavy and thick. There is absolutely no way at all to make it lighter or thinner. You can go caseless but a caseless 17 Pro Max is still significantly heavier than Air + case. Ultimately, it's the difference between being able to split the phone + extra battery vs having everything in one package that's almost as thick and heavy.

Not to dump on 17 PM but let's just say it's different priorities.

Also someone did a test on this as well: the C1X modem in Air is extremely efficient. It's so efficient that... if you're on cellular all the time, then the battery life difference between Air and 17 PM disappears.

A battery pack is an accessory. Only people who might need it every once in a while will buy one. It's not like people are slapping these on 24/7 on their Air. It's like saying why carry the weight of the Pro Max when you don't need that battery life every single day.

For most of my home usage, I could probably get by very easily with an Air. But on travel on vacation, I would be incredibly pissed. I am on vacation in UK currently, and find myself constantly returning to my hotel at night with 20% of battery left on my 17 Pro Max. Use it constantly for maps, quick googling and ChatGPT something and of course camera, using all three lenses depending on the situation. I did consider the Air for a moment, but I am so happy to have gone for a Pro Max instead, would have gone crazy otherwise!

As mentioned... if you're on cellular all the time, battery life difference between Air and 17 Pro Max actually disappears.

So in fact, if you're not on WIFI (i.e.: at home), you actually won't get better battery life with 17 Pro Max than Air. I guess other reviewers kept performing these battery life tests on WIFI, which inflated 17 PM battery life by quite a bit. In practice, 17 PM could last longer if not for the super power hungry Qualcomm modem.

Interesting thread. I never used wide angle or telephoto and I’ve had *every* pro iPhone. I never used the pro features either. I just liked the design and larger display. The air is perfect for me. My dream screen size with premium design and comfortable to hold. The idea that the camera is horrible because it’s one lens is an interesting take. I find it more than adequate and I’ve been impressed thus far. Battery life is a non issue, last all day and I’m by a charger most of the time. This is the most iPhone feeling iPhone I’ve had since the X and the 4S. I think we’re over complicating things here with spec wars from the early Android days. Just buy what you like. If you have to trash other options in the lineup, it makes me question the authenticity of your opinion.

I get what they mean. The Air was borderline too thin for my taste and didn't give enough grip. I always felt like I was about to drop it and it gave me hand cramp after a while. I did love the weight though.
