People will always mask their reasoning for getting the smaller, cheaper, not as good option with the " its better for me" excuse. Yes, some actually do want a smaller tablet to carry around but the majority are looking for a way to justify their decision when really it all comes down to money. Its like saying, well " I don't really need a truck so even though this is a way better vehicle, and way more for my money id rather have a 2001 corolla because its smaller and suits me better" GTFOH.

i love the biggie but I use the iPad in bed and it just won't work well for that. has nothing to do with price.

There are several areas where the 12.9 pro is weaker than the new 9.7 pro. What if someone values the camera quality more than they value the screen size? What if someone really wants true tone capability? Not available on the 12.9 iPad. Also, the screen quality is better on the 9.7 pro. I'm not making a justification for not spending more on the 12.9. It's the simple fact that the 9.7 pro has features that I desire that are not available on the 12.9. I live in the Midwest and make 150k a year. You can rest assured knowing that I have plenty of disposable income.
First and foremost buying a tablet based on camera quality is like buying a Ferrari and complaining that it gets crappy MPG. Also, the true tone is not something you would choose to purchase a tablet for as well. Up until a few weeks ago it didn't even exist let alone will it make a difference in day to day use. If it did, the you wanted a 9.7 no matter what and they could of sold you it with iPad 2 specs and you would of chose it over the 12.9.

Who are you to decide what features are important to people? Your feelings toward features like true tone do not change the fact that the 9.7 pro is superior in multiple ways to the 12.9 pro.

Where's the allure if it has the same or somewhat similar functionality of your other devices ??? And if you want a good camera use your iPhone 6s plus...no more allure.

No way. That's not why the majority want a smaller tablet at all. You don't apply that logic to people choosing the mini over the Air. It's no different to people turned off by the beastly 12". My situation: I could have easily got the 12". And experimented with a friends since launch. It's not suitable for what I want to do. As soon as I saw it I said to my friend. "Wow this is amazing but I'm going to hold off in case Apple release a smaller version." - at that moment neither of us thought that a small one was Apple's plan. I already have a iPad 3 and if it had a better stylus and was more powerful it would have been my dream device.

The iPad Pro 9.7 is what I always wanted from an iPad, so I'm biting the bullet and getting one. The 12" iPad Pro is a respectable, awesome device but I'd take the 9.7 over it every time. I don't expect others to do the same. I'd have been doing the same even if it had identical camera and screen tech to the 12" too, it's all about the size, the other things are just a bonus.

It's comical how there's this elitism among owners of slightly different sizes of electronic device.

The allure for me is this supposed screen. The balancing of brightness and color temperature is not an important thing, but if the screen is better quality in terms of better picture (increased brightness etc...)

Yeah, that's not true, sorry. I make enough money to be able to afford whichever model I want. I usually gravitate toward the mid size devices. It's not because I can't afford an iPad Pro or a 15" Macbook Pro. It's because when I'm out running the kids to all their stuff all over town or if I want to work on something somewhere other than my desk, the smaller form factor works out better for ME. Takes up less space, weighs less, easier to quickly fold up and put in the bag, etc.

What you're insinuating is that some people are just too poor to buy an iPad Pro and justify it by saying they don't like the bigger screen size. That's incredibly insulting and ill-informed.

Oh please, get off you're soap box. If you read CAREFULLY you would of seen where I mentioned "some actually do want a smaller tablet to carry around". Funny how you bypassed that when that would be the category you fit in. The rest of people who are going back and forth and cant decide and ultimately wind up with the 9.7 then come on here to justify their reasons are the ones im referring to. If you were contemplating the 12.9 to begin with then you knew what you were getting into.

Those of you who have moved to the 9.7, how have you sold your 12"? Assuming you couldn't return to Apple. I still love my bigger iPad but am intrigued about the smaller, more portable Pro.

A tablet with a great camera integrates into a workflow a lot easier. A lot of companies use tablets for their mobile workers and have apps where they have to insert pictures for documentation. I use mine like that, and I use it for scanning receipts, documents, etc. when I'm working in my notes apps. Much easier to not have to involve a second device, wait for a length iCloud sync (which may mean waiting to get back to the hotel when I'm traveling internationally, etc.)

A great camera on a tablet is not primarily for taking snapshots as so many seem to believe. It's something that a tablet can offer that can make it a demonstrably better tool for some workflows than a laptop.

The Air 2 is Jamie Sommers. The 9.7 Pro is faster, better screen, better camera, better speakers, pencil support, the Bionic Woman!

Am I that old?

you say it's faster, but in terms of day to day use, how are you noticing that? the iPad Air 2 is already very fast for 99% of what people do with it

What do you care what people's reasons are? The only time I ever see anyone justifying their reasons is when they get trolled for not buying the bigger iPad. I could just as easily say "People with 12.9" iPad Pros just troll everyone who bought the 9.7" iPad Pro because they have buyer's remorse for not having the nicer screen." Because even though I know that's not 100% true, that's kind of how people come off sometimes.

Can't everyone just like what they like and leave each other alone? Sheesh.

I have a 12" pro. It's very nice of course, and useful, I might add.

Thing is, if you go to an Apple store they have these new 9.7" pro tablets, all set up with little keyboard thingies (mostly white ones BTW), and when you look at them you want one.

Trust me on this :D

I think there's a fair number of people who do want a smaller tablet. Money was not an issue when I chose the Mini 4 over the Air 2. In fact, if money was an issue I wouldn't have gotten a Mini 4 either, since it's probably the most expensive 8" tablet on the market. I'm not married to iOS. There were perfectly good Android alternatives that I considered.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I have the 12" and love it but can't help wondering if the 9.7" would be the better "all rounder". And then I think, the 12" is a gorgeous display and does everything that I want it to. I use the 12" Pro at home and take a mini 4 to the office so why think of the 9.7?

As the title of this thread says, it the allure of the product. New Apple product? I want it!!

I sometimes use my iPad's camera as a makeshift visualiser in class or to scan documents. Makes sense to do all these on the same device that I'm using to teach in class. 12 megapixels does show an improvement in the clarity of the images.

I agree, not exactly the number one reason to upgrade an iPad over, but a nice addition nonetheless.

Yes! they have an insidious way of making things desirable. I think it is the new keyboard cover that really does it with the 9.7. Very nice (and the upgraded screen, of course)

(geesh, i'd better stop this or i'm going to talk myself into one of these...if it isn't already too late :D )

Just placed an order for the 9.7 (well it's my birthday on Monday so that's my excuse!) If I decide to keep I'll have to sell the 12", probably on eBay and loose a bit but what can you do?!!!

Go for it! (You can always return)

I have an iPad Pro 12.7, iPad Mini 4, and iPad Air 2. I am considering that the iPad Pro 12.7 is relatively to big for portability sakes, but I love the use of the pencil. I stuck in the stalemate of selling off my 12.7 and Air 2, for the iPad 9.7. The question I have is, is there much of difference between the Pro 9.7 and Air 2?

And those differences are they notable? In terms of performance rather than aesthetic appeal
I am doing what you just described, I have sold my Air 2 and now have both Pro's in my possession.

The 9.7" Pro seems a bit different in these areas:
- True tone display - actually really nice on its own, a little strange if you are using multiple devices.
- Improved display colors - not very noticeable, unless side by side.
- Sturdier feeling display - seems more reinforced because of the apple pencil support.

Using the apple pencil and smart keyboard are the #1 reasons to buy the thing. If you aren't going to use those then get an air 2.

I'm still not completely sure i'll sell the 12.9", they are very different devices. But I'm going to see how my usage changes with having both around, I think I'm going to end up with only the 9.7".

Just got back from Apple Store and setting up 9.7 pro. Looks tiny!
