Just got back from Apple Store and setting up 9.7 pro. Looks tiny!
It really does feel like a toy if you have become accustomed to the 12.9. For that reason alone I returned the 9.7. The 9.7 size wasn't doing it for me and since I use it a lot as a secondary TV option when gaming so I don't miss local sports games, or just to watch youtube videos I much prefer the larger screen for that experience. Also split view for apps essentially gives you an ipad mini size display for each app on screen. the 9.7 is nice if you have never had the 12.9 but trust me, if you have a 12.9 you will soon return the 9.7 because it will be hard to adjust to everything being so much smaller.

Right update;

Today I bought a 9.7" Pro and need to decide whether to keep or stick with the 12.9". The main reason I'm trying out the smaller Pro is that I found (find) the larger Pro a bit heavy to handle. Even just grabbing it from next to me to set on my lap is a bit err? Awkward? That said the 12.9 screen is lovely and the smaller Pro now looks so tiny!

Also, I have a MacBook Pro 15" and thought that the 12.9" Pro was a little too close to that.

So, at the moment I have a mini 4, Pro 9.7, Pro 12,9 and MacBook Pro 15". One of the Pro's has to go! Please help me decide.

Any thoughts/comments most welcome.

I ditched my mini 3 and 13" rMBP for a 9.7" Pro. My size choice was for the same reasons you listed. 9.7 is the sweet spot I've settled on.

Ditch the MacBook and 9.7. Replace the MacBook with the 12.9 which for most uses will perform just as good. Keep the mini as the smaller more portable device.

Upgraded my iPad mini 2 to the 9.7 iPad Pro recently. For me, the standard iPad continues to be the best compromise of portability, battery life and ease of use, especially with the 4g model.

The iPad Pro 9.7 is what I always wanted from an iPad.

This is exactly how I feel, and exactly why I sold my Air 2 after only six months of use. I have never had a turnaround on a product that fast and it was really painful to lose that much money.

However, the 9.7 inch iPad Pro is what I have always dreamed of in the tablet and what I naïvely hope to the iPad 3 would be. After the larger iPad Pro was announced, I suspected that Apple would bring out a smaller version eventually, but I had waited for so many years and my iPad 3 was no longer a good experience. After finding a good sale I decided to purchase the air two, and it was a great tablet, but not fundamentally different at core in my iPad 3 aside from Split View which was a game changer for me.

Fine tip stylus support with pressure sensitivity has change so much, and true tone really does give the iPad in the illusion of paper. Some people scoff at that, but it is actually a big deal to me.

This device is light, sleek, fast, and can finally act like a tablet computer and a high tech piece of paper.

I am doing what you just described, I have sold my Air 2 and now have both Pro's in my possession.

This may be completely weird, but does the back aluminum feel different than the iPad Air 2? I know they mentioned some kind of be blasted aluminum for the iPhone SE to give it a "satin like" finish.

It may be completely in my head, but the textured aluminum chassis feels different, almost grainy compared to the iPad Air 2

There are several areas where the 12.9 pro is weaker than the new 9.7 pro. What if someone values the camera quality more than they value the screen size? What if someone really wants true tone capability? Not available on the 12.9 iPad. Also, the screen quality is better on the 9.7 pro. I'm not making a justification for not spending more on the 12.9. It's the simple fact that the 9.7 pro has features that I desire that are not available on the 12.9. I live in the Midwest and make 150k a year. You can rest assured knowing that I have plenty of disposable income.

Screen quality is better in what way? My eyes told me the big Pro had finer resolution compared to the little Pro. Maybe differences in our eyes...

I have the MacBook Pro 15", a mini 4, and a Pro 9.7". I think it's the perfect combo for me :)

They both have exactly the same PPI. It's just one has a bigger screen, so more pixels.. Soo.. Depends what you mean by resolution. An iPad 7.9" chunk of the iPad Pro 12" should be fractionally worse than the 7.9" iPad screen.. Though it's unlikely noticeable by most users. (9.7's wider colour gamut mostly only impacts some types of art and photography.)

The resolution of the larger ipad pro is much higher than the smaller ipad pro, although the ppi is the same, the higher resolution is a major upgrade for some of us. It's like seeing the difference from 1080p resolution vs 4K resolution . The higher resolution ipad is much better for some than a higher color gamut.

Aw come on it's not that much higher res, that's hyperbole. :D (I guess "like seeing the difference vs" is a bit vague, but here's the comparative resolutions:

The difference between 1080p and 4K is an insane, night and day difference. The difference between the 7 and 12 inch iPad pros is a few inches of the same PPI, which are definitely important in some people's usage, no argument there. They're both crazy good displays.

(Edit: haha im getting way too into this. Just added all the idevices!)

Sorry, being a bit dumb but not sure I understand this?

That's the comparative size of each of the resolutions if the screens were the same pixel density. So, four 1080p images would happily fit inside a UHD/4K one. - A bit like the difference between the Iphone 3GS and the iphone 4 when it jumped to retina. The difference between the two ipad pros is the difference between those two green boxes, and not so huge really.

One funny thing about this comparison though is it shows how high pixel density is on phones now.. The 6+ is also that 1080p red box, so it isn't that far behind the ipad Pro 7" in actual pixel resolution. @_@ (and Sony have a 4K phone!)

I've just sold my 12.9 Pro and am just "saying goodbye" and have just noticed that the edges on the 7.9 are harsher than the 12.9. V smooth on the 12.9. Anyone else noticed the rough ridges on the 7.9?

The only "alluring" thing about the 9.7" iPad was the colorful Smart Covers... other than that, the 12.9" has a (2.7... almost 3k display vs the 2k display on the 9.7") While the 9.7 has better brightness and more vivid colors, I still like the 12.9" for the size and the power. Also one source said they tested the colors of the 9.7" and the colors were actually a little less accurate than the 12.9" so yeah. ;)

Hmm, I didn't really notice a change in feel, but I also had a gold colored Air 2 and a Space Gray Pro. I can say I did notice the screen reflectivity - I use my iPad on bright stages and the glare on the screen was drastically reduced. I don't really use my iPad outside, but i'd imagine you would see the benefits there as well.

Those of you who have moved to the 9.7, how have you sold your 12"? Assuming you couldn't return to Apple. I still love my bigger iPad but am intrigued about the smaller, more portable Pro.

I returned mine and went with the 9.7 instead for obvious reasons.

Upgraded from iPad 3 (purchased in March 2012) to the IPP 9.7 and the IPP is more than a worthwhile upgrade. I didn't realize how laggy the 3 had become until I started using the IPP. Loading iBooks, Safari, even iTunes - unbearable on the 3. I tend to keep my iDevices for as long as possible - upgraded to iPhone 6S last Fall from a 4S so hope to get a few years from this new iPad. Can't comment on the difference between the Air and the Pro, but for me, this was a no-brainer.

I saw a video on startup times and the iPad Pro 9.7 came in 8th place out of all of the iPads. If I were you I'd just stick with the iPad Air 2, it's the second fastest iPad aside from the 12.9. The question to ask yourself is this: "$600 worth having Apple Pencil support on a smaller screen" because that is what you are spending the money on. Everything else that the iPad Pro offers is less than or equal to the iPad Air 2. In the video I think the only iPad worse than the iPad Pro 9.7 was the iPad 3 which I also owned before I got the iPad Air and just recently the iPad Pro 12.7".

What storage did you guys go for? Anyone get the 256gb?
I went for 128 and it arrives on Wednesday, yay! 32 would likely have been enough considering to begin with I'm just going to be drawing, but thinking forward if I decide to use it for photos (if a decent DAM ever comes out!) and video editing or whatever I thought it sensible to go big. 256 would have been amazing but I don't think I'd ever need that much. :D
