Took the day off tomorrow (have too many carried-over vacation days that the boss wants me to get rid of), so looks like I'll be pulling an all-nighter, or at least a late-nighter, for this one.

Here's a checklist:
  • Check which credit cards have available balance for entire purchase.
  • Associate proper credit card and billing address with Apple ID.
  • Have multiple devices ready with the Apple Store app or website and chosen Apple ID.
    • Make sure device is fully charged.
    • Turn on Do Not Disturb.
    • Close all background apps.
    • Check Touch ID and Apple Pay.
  • Use different internet sources for each device (Wi-Fi on one, cellular on the other, etc.)
  • Check the Apple Store app for the proper Apple ID.
  • Check that security code is entered for selected credit card.
  • Favorite all the products and accessories you want.
  • Pre-order or reserve the products at launch time with whichever device can get through.
  • Determine if heading to a local Apple store will provide better outcome.
    • If so, line up before store opens.
    • Determine if online pre-order/reservation should be canceled over in-store pre-order/reservation.

Jeez, and I thought I was prepared. I have a feeling you'll get the watch that you want. Also, try using Evernote.

i was considering ordering both sizes and returning one of them...If everyone does this, it will drastically affect the availability. Not cool, right?

I was going for the 38MM (guy, 175mm wrist) - mainly to share bands with wife and have a discreet watch...but when i printed out a mock up, the face of the 38mm looks super tiny....

Yes, it's a dick move. If you're not sure which size to get, make an in-store appointment. I'm 175mm and 42mm is the clear way to go.

This will be my first time pre-ordering via Apple someone stated above using the credit card on file for Apple ID. Does it have to be the same card we use for iTunes or can it be any valid credit card in our name?

I'm just concerned that not all Apple Watch accessories will be available at time of launch. I'd get a spare 1M charger to keep at work or in my bag at all times.

Keep a charger at work? With an 18hr battery life, i'm hoping that i'll never run out during the day.

Or just do what I do:

Smaller wrist size than 170mm, get the 38mm.
Bigger wrist size than 190, get the 42mm.

Get a ruler or draw on a piece of paper and wrap it around your wrist. It'll do fine. My wrist size is ~155mm so I'll be getting the 38mm.

Don't buy more than one. It's rather selfish.

What if you're in the middle of those two sizes?! :p

I have 185mm wrists, but they are only 60mm wide. Quite conflicted - was set on the 38mm, but think the 42mm would be easier to use. My current watch is larger than the 42mm, but the actual face is smaller so gives the illusion that it's smaller than it actually is.

I'm doing this. I'm ordering both sizes on the Space Gray Sport :D.

If you really must order both sizes, the best way is to put in two separate orders. Then do a try-on appointment before April 24, and cancel the order you don't want.

You can't cancel part of an order and still keep your place in line. So if you're unsure, place multiple orders.

If you cancel an order, the watch will quickly be reassigned to another customer. If you receive it and then return it, it can only be sold as a refurbished item. You're keeping someone else from getting a watch for a while.

Don't order and take delivery of stuff you have no intention of keeping. It puts you in the same social class as the hordes of phone scalpers who invite their friends and family members to cut in the front of the line with them during iPhone launches. Or people who buy TVs they can't afford, watch the super bowl on them, and then return them. It makes you pond scum. That's just my humble opinion.

Thanks man, awesome advice. I'm planning to set up an appointment to try it out and then cancel the one I don't want. :)

One thing I'd like to add to that checklist:

If you have a Barclaycard with Apple Rewards, you do have to call them in advance to activate the promotional deferred interest offer. They will give you a case number to which you can call back 10-15 days after purchase to make sure the deferred interest has been applied to it.

It's 6 months, no interest up to $499, or 12 months up to $999, and 18 months beyond $999. If you're getting two Apple Watches, breaking it down over 12 months is a no-brainer, as long as you stick to the payment plan.

Call 1-866-603-7217 to speak to your Barclaycard representative.

Anyone have suggestions/opinions on whether the Express Checkout option on the online Apple Store is a good or bad idea for tonight?

(I'm actually planning to get an extra Watch charging cable, as well as a new AirPort base station (not particularly a Watch-specific purchase; it's just that my AirPort at home is getting old and creaky) in the same order, so if Express Checkout isn't a big advantage I'm planning to skip it.)

I'm getting a spare charger as well, but note that you can't "favorite" the accessories such as bands or chargers. Plan on buying them in a separate order just to make sure the watch order gets in.

Why not just order the airport right now? Everything in the apple store ships for free. It'll also let you test express checkout.

It's in the Account Settings menu; for U.S. customers (such as me), it's at https://secure2.store.apple.com/us/account/setup .

More hits to the card. It's better off for domestic tranquility if there's one Apple Store charge on the bank statement rather than three, notwithstanding the fact that the one charge will carry the same dollar figure as the three would in total. Also, I'm not sure how much of a "test" of Express Checkout it would be, given that what I'm really wondering about is whether that option is useful in the very peculiar circumstance of a Day One 12:01 A.M. Pacific Preorder Storm. I'm sure that it has its benefits under normal circumstances (such as this afternoon), but that may not be much help late tonight.

Unless you're opening up the card, you do need to manually call and set up the promotion, and the window to purchase with deferred interest becomes open for 30 days. Just called to do it and received my case number. I've had my Barclaycard since 2013, so I'm not automatically eligible. Best to call to be sure.

My card is the Apple Rewards card, so either way, I get points for making Apple.com purchases, but the deferred interest is a separate offer that's not always available.

I've already verified my apple ID and apple store cc information is updated last monday and accurate. I don't want any troubles checking out.. DONE and DONE! haha

Getting very excited over here! I plan to get all my machines set up by 11:30 PM PDT and ready to go. I gotta check my Apple ID and make sure my card is in there. I'm not gonna buy AppleCare right away because I wanna check out the device extensively and make sure I'll actually wear it (I have never worn a watch before).

What'll be screwed up is if my Windows VM connects to the Apple Store first. I'm pulling out all the stops because I wanna make sure I get the watch I want on launch day (42mm, Sport, Space Gray).
