rate plans are pretty similar across the board right now, if you happen to have one of the old plans from years ago then great, but you can't compare that plan with what is available right now.

what everyone has been upset about is iPhones no longer get to use a grandfathered plan, and ATT has decided that they will use the current plan, which is fair, i can understand complaining if the iPhone plan was more expensive than the Blackberry plan or the Blackjack plan, but it is not, it is the same, everyone needs to get over it

I'll be paying virtually the same as my current voice plan with another carrier, plus the added fee for data, which I don't currently have at all, but will be utilizing a LOT with the iPhone. The total cost to me will be in line with what many other carriers offer in their current plans for PDA/smartphones, and the functionality of the phone will be superior to what those other carirers are able to offer me. I don't see what the big deal is. If you think it's too much, don't get it.

Where does it say early adopters are eligible for a $199/$299 plan?

From AT&T's page:

"What will I pay for iPhone 3G?
If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.

You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required. Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB."

And my plan is old, but they cycle it sometimes and I saw it a couple of months ago as a special. The next best thing is currently Individual Plus 1000 anytime minutes, with unlimited nights and weekends $49.99.

If you have an iPhone on AT&T and you login to your account and check eligibility for an upgrade for a new iPhone 3G, it tells you that you are eligible. Anyone with an iPhone on AT&T is automatically eligible, this has been common knowledge since shortly after Steve Job's keynote speech announcing the iPhone. Everyone knows this but you. You obviously have your gripes, but there are a lot of different cases out there for a lot of different people locked in the conundrum of whether or not to get a new iPhone 3G. I have my own hesitations, however I have had AT&T for about 3 years now and although it hasn't been a perfect relationship, what is? I have had enough confrontations with them to be annoyed, however, IN MY AREA, the service is great. I don't entirely mind paying a premium to get an iPhone and the fantastic service I will receive while using it. This is how it is, take it or leave it.

The broken record is perfect for this scenario. We get it, some people are happy, some people are sad and there are a lot in between, but come on, do we have to hear about everyone who's upset by this? Read the post, comment that you agree and go on about your day.

DUH! It's because you're using 3G, which is 2-3 times faster, which means you are probably going to more sites and using more data.

Actually from what I read in other threads I don't think the change in the rates are due to 3G. I think it due to how they classify the phone as a PDA/Smartphone now.

If you live in an area that doesn't have 3G capability you still pay the new data rate.

If you're an early adopter and follow AT&T's instructions to logon to the account manager thing and check your update status, it'll show you that you're eligible.

AT&T also mentioned it in some media interviews.

The exclusive wireless carrier for the iPhone in the United States said customers using the smartphone today are automatically eligible for an upgrade to the new iPhone at the subsidized price of $199 for the 8-GB model and $299 for 16-GB version, AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told InformationWeek.

I'm sick of hearing people complaing about how they are sick of hearing people complaining about the 3g iPhone/AT&T prices....

Let them complain.

You complaining about them complaining is no better at all.

I don't know maybe I'm a minority.

I don't need no stinkin' 3g iPhone anyway...I'm gonna get the HiPhone :D

For the 700 min family plan with a blackberry and an enV we are paying almost $160 after taxes with Verizon. As far as I can tell, with AT&T we are looking at 139.99 plus tax and that is with two smartphones.

I'm sick of hearing people be okay with people who complain but complain about the people who complain about the people who complain.:D

Surprisingly, that's grammatically correct. Just like this:

James, while John had had had, had had had had; had had had had a better effect on the teacher.

Where do you want it to end? You just did the same thing.

Geez, I can't wait until July 11th so the majority of these people stop posting the same darn threads. The iPhone and its plans are OPTIONAL... you are not forced to buy them, so stop wasting our time with sob stories about how AT&T is starving kids and beating the elderly. It is a stinking phone and service plan. Get over it.

LOL! *snatches aspirin from SonicJay*

Seriously though...if it's not taking food out of your mouth or the mouths of your children...suck it up and keep it moving.

You do have a choice in this matter, either you do or you don't.

Well all the posts/threads that I've read over related to this topic. My post was the first that I saw that was complaining about people who complain about people who are complaining about 3g iPhone.

It will never end try to keep up. :D

Plus I put a smilie face, so I thought that would infer that I was not really complaining at all. I just like it when people quote my post. It makes me feel cool...
Kinda like my iPhone...

You are cool indeed. :)

I didn't mean to sound like a jerk towards your post, I meant to be a jerk to those who complain about pricing :D

You are dead on... and yes it will never end

Stay classy ;)

I'm so mad at Toyota because when I bought my Toyota Corolla back in 1985, I only paid $7000 for it but now they want to charge $15000. Thats a rip off and I dont know what I'm going to do.

I will just go buy a Kia now.

 Absolutely wonderful! Thanks!

I like this guy he's cool.
He quotes my posts... Which is cool...

And I agree, stop complaining.

One love. One :apple:

People in this forum will argue that you get the "amazing, new, fantastic, magical" 3G...but IMO, it's not worth that much of a price difference. AT&T is ripping us off...that's for sure.

No, I would argue that if you don't think its worth the price then don't get one. Its that simple.

For what its worth, I won't be upgrading to the 3G iPhone. Not because I think AT&T is ripping me off, but because I just got my iPhone in January and don't see the new features compelling enough to upgrade so soon.

Original iPhone lines are always available for the upgrade pricing because the original iPhone was not subsidized by AT&T, you paid full price.

That's not exactly true, it's just that all iPhones are a special case allowing you to be eligible, nothing to do with it not being subsidized. As there are plenty of iPhone owners that have had a subsidzed phone from ATT before in the last 2 years, so those wouldn't have been eligible normally. Actually, probably on the first launch, you were still held to your last subsidized phone until recently.

Your more than likely on a grandfathered plan with T Mobile so you really cant compare prices. I

I just did a quick check. If I wanted a 700 minute family plan with T-Mobile right now it would cost...

$69.99 which is exactly what it costs with AT&T.

Add to that the cheapest Blackberry or Interent Plan at $39.99 and T-Mobile is $10 a month more expensive than AT&T.

iPhone unlocked with T-Mobile, $39.99 a month with 1000 minutes anytime, free nights and weekends x2.

For $90, yes NINETY, I get 900 minutes (100 less), and 3G data. OK. Is anyone going to argue that it's worth $50 a month for 3G?

No, we're going to argue that you can't compare a rate plan for a cheap phone with no data at all to a smartphone plan with unlimited data.

But then if we want to have a text package, the ONLY option is unlimited for $30, which is insane. Why can't we have 200 shared texts for $5, like the single-user plans?

So just get two single-user plans for 400 texts. So they aren't shared, so what? Then it's only $10, not $30.

And I REALLY feel bad for all the early adopters who paid $600 for their iPhones when they came out, and now have to fork out another $400 or $500 to upgrade to the new ones. I shed a tear for you.

First off, those who paid $600 got a $100 gift certificate for the Apple Store. Second, as has been pointed out already, they can ALL upgrade for the cheap price, assuming they've always paid their bills.

Your 3G speeds aren't even THAT FAST, at 1.4Mbit max (so expect to see much less).

3G speed is over 3mbps, it is estimated that on average people get 1.4mbps, so all AT&T is doing is capping it at that so that *everyone* gets that speed rather than a few people getting 3mbps and others getting 200kpbs. And AT&T already announced they expect to get it up to 7mbps by the end of the year.

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I'm paying $49/month for 1500 anytime minutes, and unlimited data (blackberry on T-mobile).

It makes me think twice about getting a iPhone. I still plan to get the iPhone, but it irks me to think that I'll be paying a heck of a lot more money each month...for less.

People in this forum will argue that you get the "amazing, new, fantastic, magical" 3G...but IMO, it's not worth that much of a price difference. AT&T is ripping us off...that's for sure.

Yet for a new T-Mobile customer to get the same plan that you get from AT&T on an inferior phone it is more expensive.

People need to compare apples to apples. It is all good and nice that you have a sweetheart deal from T-Mobile for being there. People also have those with AT&T. The reality is, though, that new customers do not get those deals.

I thought it was just the UK that usually gets ripped off but jeez, AT&T are really exploiting the iPhone's exclusivity and popularity, they are ripping you off already with the fact that it's a 2 year contract instead of 18 months, for a $10 extra for 3G data and no texts!!

It's safe to say you are being ripped off.

Glad I'm on o2.

It really is not THAT much more money, heck me upgrading is only going to cost $10 extra bucks a month. Is that worth 3G speeds and GPS? Not to mention the fact that I am paying $200 up front instead of $600? You bet, it has been said a lot but it holds true, if you dont like it dont buy it. Simple as that, yet what also is true is that 90% of these people complaining about being ripped off and "how could AT&T do this to us" are going to be in the same line as the rest of us come the 11th. See all you complainers there:)

OK, so I guess I'll rephrase.

AT&T suck at making it clear on their website that people owning existing iPhones get the $199/$299 price. In fact, there's zero indication of that unless (apparently) you log in to your account.

Second, if we don't complain about something on the boards, what's the point of the boards? :)

And last, I find it amusing that some people rag on T-Mobile. I've had T-Mobile since it was called Voicestream, and have had zero problems with it. I know a ton of people who absolutely despise AT&T. Funny, huh?

This said, if my IBM discount for plans works, I'll get the new iPhone. If it doesn't, I won't! Quite simple.

yet what also is true is that 90% of these people complaining about being ripped off and "how could AT&T do this to us" are going to be in the same line as the rest of us come the 11th. See all you complainers there:)

I hate you. You'd better be wrong. :p
