The AT&T plans are an absolute rip-off, no matter how look at them.

Canada - ripped off.
Norway - ripped off.

America - one of the best deals in the world, as always...

How exactly can someone be "ripped off" on a device that no one has purchased yet and when they do so, will be making an entirely optional choice to pay the price required?

I think we have a new psychological disorder for the DSM:

Optional Pre-Purchase Stress Disorder or OPPSD.

It's a cluster of symptoms that result from feeling like something you want to buy is more expensive than you feel it should be and doesn't include the features you want.

And last, I find it amusing that some people rag on T-Mobile. I've had T-Mobile since it was called Voicestream, and have had zero problems with it. I know a ton of people who absolutely despise AT&T. Funny, huh?

I find it amusing that some people rag on at&t. I have had at&t since they were at&t the first time before switching to Cingular, and have zero problems with it. I know a ton of people who absolutely despise t-mobile. Funny, huh? opinions are like *** holes and at the end of the day you can hate at&t, have every person you know want them to drop out of the cellular market completely but they are the ones with the iPhone :)

I've been with AT&T since the PB Wireless days and I havent had a single issue. I know others who've had TMobile and they hate it. Just because you hate AT&T doesnt mean everyone else does. Let's see if TMobile will throw you a cookie for being their loyal advocate.

This said, if my IBM discount for plans works, I'll get the new iPhone. If it doesn't, I won't! Quite simple.

I thought you hate at&t and everything about at&t. Why bother even try to get a discount when you know your gonna hate the service.

Doesnt it have a lot to do with the amount of towers and placement of them that makes us love/hate? AT&T here sucks signal wise.

Where did I say I hate AT&T? I've called them and gotten zero assistance regarding where IBM discounts will apply, but I don't hate the actual AT&T service personally. I've never used it!

I'm in the exact same boat as you. I'm paying $49/month for 1500 anytime minutes, and unlimited data (blackberry on T-mobile).

It makes me think twice about getting a iPhone. I still plan to get the iPhone, but it irks me to think that I'll be paying a heck of a lot more money each month...for less.

People in this forum will argue that you get the "amazing, new, fantastic, magical" 3G...but IMO, it's not worth that much of a price difference. AT&T is ripping us off...that's for sure.

Then why on earth would you or anyone else play into it...They are ripping off anyone who drinks the iphone Koolaid.... Heck there are threads here about people who are going to camp out to get ripped off....Heck yea, I want one, but I usually get kissed when I get screwed....So forget it...Ill keep Verizon and my dumb phone Dare !!

Hehe. Yes you can call me Will. :)

I have the Premier site link, and it does say 23% off voice and data plans, but AT&T seemed to be under the impression that does not include iPhones. They seemed REALLY clueless. And that was after speaking to two different people.

If I can get 23% off a family plan, I'd go for it. But nobody seems to know anything, in typical Apple/AT&T style. I'll just have to wait till the thing is out..

here is a way you could beat the system. If your going to have a family plan for your wife and your self, simply open a 3rd line on your family plan. It will just cost you extra $9 a month but you could make this your primary line. When you do this, you could apply the premier discount on this line which will have all the main charges. This is how I have it currently.

Good Luck Will !

I'm with you, T-Mobile buddy! I've been with them since Voicestream days, too. T-Mobile rulez, AT&T drools.

Took the words right out of my mouth. I've been a looongtime customer (since before Cingular) and have never had a single issue with them.

One question I have though, WilliamG...How can you make a phrase like "typical AT&T" if you've never had service with them?? Based on this one experience where you're dealing with CSRs who are fielding questions regarding not only a new product, but a new pricing schematic that differs from the current policies regarding the iPhone?

At this point, you're gonna get differing information from different reps. They sound just as confused as us at this point and I can't blame them. When I think about it, there have been plenty of times in my career where we were implementing a new policy and there was confusion among the staff while they were figuring things out. I'm sure others have experienced the same thing. Give 'em some time to iron the wrinkles out.

lol@ all the people complaining.

if you're gonna complain, dont get it. simple as that.

t-mobile hasnt had any good phones in a long time. they're behind. i paid the $200 cancellation fee because i got sick of waiting for them to come out with something good. i'm glad i paid it because id rather have an iphone.

I hope you paid that to get a 3G iPhone...because I have Tmobile AND an iPhone...I mean I have Tmo ON my iPhone.

but you're right about Tmo's poop phones.

OK, so I guess I'll rephrase.

AT&T suck at making it clear on their website that people owning existing iPhones get the $199/$299 price. In fact, there's zero indication of that unless (apparently) you log in to your account. .

What? You posted the info yourself!

From AT&T's page:

"What will I pay for iPhone 3G?
If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.

You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required. Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.

.

Again, I'm misquoted. I said like typical "ATT/Apple." The combination has done nothing but tick people off, me included. Apple are always secretive until the last minute, and the AT&T combo has made AT&T clueless as to their services. It was the same thing last year. So, based on how AT&T have had two chances to get this right just a WEEK before launch, I'd say I have the right to call this typical now. The employees are utterly, utterly clueless.

What? You posted the info yourself!

Well, for upgrade-eligible, it should also say "This includes ALL current iPhone owners." I have some elderly friends who got iPhones, and they asked me if they would be able to get new phones at the $199/$299 price point, and it wasn't clear to me that they would. They don't ever access their AT&T account online, so why wouldn't AT&T make it painfully clear? Also, why wouldn't they make it painfully clear that you can get separate texting plans? Their site makes it look like the only plan option on Family Plans is the unlimited for $30. It's just madness. Standards keep dropping, and we keep buying anyway...

AT&T has been $30/month forever with PDA phones. 1st Gen iPhone owners were lucky to have a $20 plan. The plan was intended for normal phones by AT&T standards. PDA/Smartphones use a lot more data and if the price makes you mad, it is very simple... don't buy the product. And by the way T-Mobile sucks... coverage is nothing compared to AT&T nationwide. Certain areas maybe which you get with any company or another.

I sell AT&T phones for a living, I am a Manager for RadioShack and fully understand the pricing plans and why they charge what they do. In the end, it is business and you can't stay in business without making money correct??? No one does anything for free or at cost.

There a difference between making money and ridiculous.

And we as a nation could do something about that. But no one will stand together and unite for something. But completely separate issue.

For my family and me, AT&T's voice plan is actually very good. For $60/month, we get what amounts to unlimited minutes, since calls between AT&T lines don't count, and that applies to most of our calls. So our rollover minutes keep going up.

I've had the iPhone since it came out. I was originally skeptical about the value of data on a cell phone (never had it before), but I was hooked in a day or two. $20/month has seemed fair, particularly given the limitations of edge. I'm going to wait and see if I'm willing to pay an additional $10/month for 3G.

u got your sidekick... what else would you need.

sidekicks are huge, and crap i dont text enough to warrant the need for a sidekick, they're ugly too. i had a bb pearl, better than a sk

of course i'm getting a iphone 3g. even if you do unlock the 3g one to use on t-mobile you wont be able to use the 3g network on t-mobile because of different frequencies.

You're calling AT&T's rate plans ridiculous? You have no idea what 'ridiculous' is. We're paying $60 for data (unlimited, but apps like YouTube and Maps are bandwidth throttled), a 300 minute rate plan with NO night/weekend allowance and NO free mobile-to-mobile is like $80, and existing customers have to pay $400-500 ETF plus an additional $70 premium (16GB model) over new customers, despite having to sign the same 27 month contract (that's not a typo, BTW) as new customers ...

I'm sorry, but the only 'ridiculous' thing in this thread is the incessant whining about your awesome rate plans. ;)

I am paying the same prices for another 3G phone and honestly... i'm going to cancel it. This is why i'd want the iPhone without the data package. (besides the fact i'm on a tight budget since losing my job)

The other day i desperately needed to get online. I had full service and 3G was available. I was in the NYC area. It was running so slow, it was impossible to do anything. The one time i really needed it, it was useless. So for $30 a month, they can keep it. It's not worth it if it not reliable.
