Considering he just released the most hyped phone ever, this being a multi-million investion for Apple and a huge move for the whole industry - i would dare to say "yeah, he does care".
But this could just be my imagination.
Oh yes he cares a lot about the iPhone. It's the propellent Apple needs to reach the next level in its growth, and growth is what Wall Street cares about and what every CEO cares about. Apple's stock price is at $130+ because of the iPhone's potential impact on Apple's bottom line.

even though its been said before... I love how poeople have forgot how BIG of a product ipod is for apple.

the iphone is not **** right now compared to the ipod, and it never will be up at ipod status

you dont go stripping your latest interface and sacrafice design and apps that could go into your best selling product

i know apple will suprise us on wednesday as they always do...cant wait

Here is the best prediction

They are going to announce sony psp like device to take on the gaming world. Just mark my words.

Well, I would love to think like you but what if Apple under deliver ? Look at the stock price falling....

But, you know, the current 5.5 gen iPod is a 2 years old design and since then, Apple worked on the iPhone and OS X for portable device (iPhone and iPod)... so for sure, Apple to make a splash, need to get the OS X based iPod out the door asap....

Interesting because I remember reading a LONG time ago that Apple was working on a "gPod" to compete with the PSP for handheld gaming.

Since then I've seen nothing about it though so I just dismissed it.

I still think there's no way this is happening though.

Here's a link... it's a 2 year old site though

That would be brilliant but what games and formats would it support. We have UMD's and nintendo cartridges.. Another format would be a pain..... Maybe downladable games would be the answer but they would be rubbish...

Maybe gaming on Apple TV will be announced, or safari on Apple TV :D

the stock market dip was pretty much know to happen, we heard it from apple themselves.

Think about how many ipod sales have gone down, or lost the last few weeks due to low-restocking becouse of the new arrivals.

when you slow down sales of you top product thats what happens

what do you do to fix that?...come out with widescreen touchscreen OSX ipods of course:)

Apple already game out with a game console, in 1995. It was called the "Apple Pippen" and it had a puny PowerPC processor and it bombed in the market.

lol I remember that stupid thing... they only ended up manufacturing like a thousand of them... haha

anyway this supposed "gPod" was probably just all made up anyway

I personally think there are going to be quite a lot of dissapointed people on the 5th. Now that we've all seen the iphone, everyone is expecting something similar for the touch screen ipod without the phone features. Anything less won't do.

The recent images that were originally thought to be a stubby nano were later said to be the actual ipod replacement so its quite possible there won't even be a touch screen version at all.

So how many of you are finding that you just cannot wait until the 5th!?

I'm pumped for it

yes...i check various websites every hour just looking for ipod news/romours

I check:

engadget
gizmodo
macrumors
9 to 5 mac
Google news

Waiting really sucks.

If this is the case, I'll kill myself.

But i agree, it IS possible that the 5th won't bring a radical change in iPod form factor.

I still REALLY think that apple might make the new iPods wi-fi enabled, but make it locked down to something like a "only youtube" type thing.

Like adding a youtube icon on the main screen but locking it down from a full web browser or something like that, just because apple and youtube have had colaborations in the past.

Possible? I think so

Yes, thats possible. Locked to youtube and online itunes store but eventually it will be unlocked by somebody for use with anything and everything.

betoranaldi was talking about the AirPort Express with AirTunes which is used to stream music to remote speakers, share a printer, and extend the range of the network. I would like to see an updated model that can support the iPod AV Connection Kit. Currently it can only connect to the iPod Universal Dock but it would be sweet if the AirPort Express was updated to handle this functionality.

i agree, youtube on the iphone just seems like such an ipod type feature, i think they decided to bring it out early to get iphone sales up, becouse its one hell of an app.

wi-fi locked to wireless remote for home stero with airport, youtube. safari is not an ipod app but i am still crossing my fingers.

but with a wifi chip in the ipod couldnt this be open to hackers and programmers to develop a browser?

Yes that's true, which is the unfortunate reason apple might decide to exclude this feature, because they know, eventually, someone will figure out how to hack it

You have no idea what you are talking about!
There are some fantastic Wireless headsets available. It may not be technically possible for use with an ipod, but great wireless headsets for music are available.

 Never mind.

You're trying to tell me that bluetooth earpieces can offer greater than 128 kbps audio through a class 1 bluetooth device. You'd never get class 2 or 3 on a portable device, and only once you get to class 3 can you get anywhere near enough bandwidth to really transmit music without losing a large amount of information.

Look here. WiFi is going to make into the iPod sooner or later, it's inevitable. As for the hackers they won't stop Apple. Sure Apple will make the iPod difficult to hack but at the end of the day no company can stop hackers. At the end of the day you can't really stop them from doing what they want to, they always succeed at the end.

With all this banter of "oh the full screen ipod won't have wifi or be crippled ie. no Safari" from the peeps on this thread. I think you all need to remember what Apple (Steve Jobs) said when asked if the iPhone would impact iPod sales. If there's going to be any canibalisation of the iPod market it's better that Apple's the one to do it. Couple that with the most recent quarter's report which stated that their upcoming estimates included a large product transition that would reduce profitability in Q3 ie. now. They are prepared for cross product pillaging. Apple's not going to sit idly by whilst Zune or some other pretender to the thrown snatches the crown just because Apple doesn't want to impact the iPhone sales, which applies to a small percentage of the overall market, ie. limited to US and customers at end of mobile contract/prepared to bend over. Of course they are going to provide the features if they believe we want them. Sure as ducks are ducks and geese are geese, they know how big a handheld like the iPhone minus the phone is going to be. Hell thats why they could agree to a 5 year exclusitivity contract with AT&T, because they know anyone who can't have/stand them will buy the high end iPod instead. I also suspect the backup plan if the iPhone service contract could not be agreed with any provider was to release iPhone as an iPod minus the GSM radio. How else could they justify the 2 year development time of rebuilding OS X embedded for ARM without all the service agreements in place. They knew from day 1 the technologies were destined for an iPod if the iPhone didn't fly.

Caveat emptor: The point made about cost of components is a valid one, the funky screen & flash memory are pretty pricey. Therefore i don't expect to buy an iPod touch or whatever it's called for less than $400 & it will have a hard drive. Hence the fugly inbetween flash fatPod, also lended credance by the rumor that there's 4 ipod models. Shuffle/Nano/fatPod/Touch.

M. :D
