woah man!! I am everything but a scammer! I hate scammers. I think th e people that have posted on this thread have taken it the wrong way. I didn't mean for it to sound like ripping Apple off is fun. I just wanted to know if anyone said anything creative other than the normal.

Ill tell you right now, my iPhones in the past have had real issues. i.e. Light leaks, plastic not flush with metal, glass set un-even (my first iPhone), battery/dropped call issues.

What i was trying to find out, was that if you had a scratch/knick, i wanted to know how long you sat there trying to find the smallest LEGIT problem wrong with your phone. i.e. toggle switch loose, not plush, etc.

so before you start calling me a scammer maybe i should clear my self up a bit. thanks guys.

swing and a miss there guy

I was in a similar situation OP with a MANUFACTURING DEFECT that I needed a replacement for. I told them that I was having issues with 3G suddenly cutting off. They followed me up out of the mall to test it and the guy told me to tell him if the signal cut out. Then I went into settings general 3G & slid it on and off. He obviously wasn't looking. :p I got a replacement. Ironically I took the replacement back a week later because the problem I faked actually started happening. :D

My phone had many cracks around the dock connector, headphone jack, and SIM tray but they wouldn't let me replace it for that because I had already had one that had cracks in it.

Don't let all these people make you feel bad. I too have been frustrated with the Apple policy that you can only make an exchange for a certain issue once. Good luck! :)

Hey guys, I know that many of us get pretty ticked when we get a knick or scratch on our iPhones, and it makes you want a "new" one again. So, I want to ask, whats the best excuse you have told a Mac Genius at the Genius Bar in order to get a new phone w/out actually telling them that the scratch, which you have requires a magnifying glass to spot, is really bugging you?

I know I have plenty, as I am on my 5th since iDay2. I think it's pretty cool how you can basically tell them anything and you get a new phone. Gotta love

Er...

Are you completely illiterate?? Or do you just not pay attention?

The OP was saying that if he damages his phone, he's looking for MANUFACTURER'S DEFECTS so he can take it in. It's not like they're hard to find. He's not MAKING UP reasons to exchange. Seriously you have to be dumb to think he meant he created an issue in his mind and got the genius to believe it existed.

All you righteous Apple lovers need to step back and quit acting like you've never done a dishonest thing in your life. It's rather nauseating.

"I think it's pretty cool that you can tell them anything and get a new phone."

What part of this do you not understand as a scam?

The fact that no matter WHAT you tell them, there's going to be manufacturer's defects there 90% of the time anyway. Apple not replacing their poorly made products would be more of a scam, IMO.

Spoken like a true scam artist. Your making a fool of yourself here with your reasoning but come to think of it most people who scam do not have a conscious. They can tell a lie and make themselves believe it.

He's not the only one. In fact, I lightly scratched my iPhone's screen two days ago while sanding the bevel and I'm headed to the Genius Bar this afternoon for a replacement. My iPhone suffers from light leak, cracked plastic (at the dock) and numerous chunks of dust under the glass. I plan on getting it exchanged for the latter, but using the former (two) as fall backs. ;)

Many, like 80%, of my iPhones have had stuck pixels, and when I say stuck pixels I mean an unacceptable amount, more than 5, usually around 7 :)
I still have to see an iPhone 3g with no light leak on the left side between the rubber gasket around the glass and the aluminum bezel. The problem, in my case, is Apple stopped acknowledging this as an issue and the guy I talked to said it's now considered acceptable.
If you look for cracks it's quite possible you'll find some, especially around the headphone jack and sim tray. Don't forget the camera and the volume switches.
The home button and the sleep/wake button are subject to anomalies, but in most cases this is not swap justifiable.
The flushness of the screen can be an issue for some ( a few, I hope)
The silent switch can either come off or get stuck, make it hard to "switch" on and off.
I think this sums it up. All of this is probably true about any product of any kind out there, nothing is perfect and nothing is identical to another object, even of the same batch.
Considering Karma and all, just keep your phone if you caused a small aesthetic problem, you'd be sorry if you drop your next one or it has some real defects. Buy a case for it ( I haven't, but it's also true I have never dropped mine)

I have never done a dishonest thing in my life. :D :D :D

Well, there was that one time when I dropped my iPhone in the pool. After I found it a week later, I noticed a teeny scratch about 0.005 micrometers in length on the Apple logo, so I broke off the ringer switch and brought it into the Apple store and got a free one, no questions asked. :D :D :D :D

Not really.

So, just to make it better....

I was on my 5th iPhone (Previous 4 did have LEGIT problems that I found). Dropped it about 2 months ago. Cracked the top left corner, going from the toggle switch to the earhole down to about an inch below the top of the screen. (Spiderweb) It was also pretty banged up on the corners. Lived with it for about 2 months, went to a local phone repair shop, got the screen replaced for $75. Got home, scheduled an Genius Bar appt. Went down today and spoke to the Mac Genius. Told him that I wished to swap mine out because of cracks in the plastic housing, basically every major stress spot. i.e. Toggle/Silent buttons, 30 pin connector, sleep/wake, etc. Told me it was unreplaceable because it was a known problem and I had already replaced one before for this issue.

I told him that it also was very glitchy and it restarted all the time (which it did) He spoke to a manager, and wa-laa, a new one for me. :D Bought an incase slider while I was there, pulled off the plastic and went right into the case. Pretty happy I got a new one.

No start your trash talkin.

So you're on your 6th iPhone now? That's cute.

Try to get no less than 6 more before the new iPhone comes out.

you are an idiot
people like you are idiots
you should be a politician with your backpedalling and ********

As far as I'm concerned allmIne has it spot and and /thread right there. Please let me pay for your (OP's) rent and food with my tax dollars.

ROFL!

Explain how I'm making a fool of myself by pointing out Apple's poor quality control. Please.

And it's you're as in "you are", not your. Fool.

Give me a break. 90% of the time? Really? 90%? If Apple really had that high of a fail rate, would any of us ever buy the stuff? Not likely.

Well, actually ... 90% sounds about right. I'm on number five (or six?) now, and am planning to get another replacement this week or next. Uneven glass/buttons/bezel/seams, dust under the glass, light leak, battery charging issues, failed audio. Yeah, come to think of it, they've all had problems. ;)

I'm on my 4th iPhone 3G and I looked at 2 others while I was getting my 4th replacement before I was happy. I'd say that's a pretty high failure rate.

#1 Light leak, loose buttons, crooked glass and horizontal lines.
#2 Cracks, light leak, loose buttons and horizontal lines.
#3 Misaligned bezel and plastic causing a sharp edge, and horizontal lines.
#4 Perfect. No light leak, solid buttons, no cracks, and no horizontal lines.

I got my iPhone on iDay #1. It's been replaced twice for legitimate reasons, but the current unit has been flawless for about a year now. I carry it "naked", save for a screen protector which I find gives me better control when touching and swiping.

It's dinged up all to hell. The casing has a couple of dents and many scratches from drops and simply being carried around. At one point the volume rocker jammed, but I managed to free it up enough that it now works even though the top looks like it's permanently pressed in.

I consider every owner-inflicted ding to be a badge of honour. I'll be upgrading sooner or later (whenever the 32GB model comes out), but it will be a shame to retire the old trooper.
