Why invent an excuse? Liar

Only if it is really a defective one you deserve a good replacement.
These are the known defects:
-Plastic crack near the headphone jack
-sharp edge in the bottom part silver bezel not flushed with the plastic
-screen leaks, as a consequence it then will show dust grains inside your screen
-sharp edge/not flush SIM card holder with rest of the iPhone

This list is based on the 5 iPhone 3G that I have got replaced at the Genius Bar.
My current one has the plastic cracks around the headphone jack, but is barely noticeable only when it is exposed to good light conditions.

I have this problem and intermittent dead pixels (maybe not dead - perhaps stuck is a better description -but on occasions certain ones appear dead).

The bezel has bugged for a while but it never occurred to me that I could/should get it replaced.

My sister had the same problem on her first gen iPhone. It was so sharp it felt like it could cut you. She got it replaced, no questions asked.

I'm on my 4th iPhone 3G and I looked at 2 others while I was getting my 4th replacement before I was happy. I'd say that's a pretty high failure rate.

#1 Light leak, loose buttons, crooked glass and horizontal lines.
#2 Cracks, light leak, loose buttons and horizontal lines.
#3 Misaligned bezel and plastic causing a sharp edge, and horizontal lines.
#4 Perfect. No light leak, solid buttons, no cracks, and no horizontal lines.

That's one good one out of six that you looked at. That's pretty poor but it's not a 90% failure rate. Not even close.

And it's also not typical. If it was, it would have been front page news--literally everywhere--for the past eight months: "Apple Issues Massive Recall: 9 out of 10 iPhones defective!"

Mine isn't quite as bad as that. You can feel that the screen is sunk slightly on one side (fractions of a millimetre) and raised on the opposite edge.

I dont think it is worth the hassle of changing as the phone functions perfectly in every other way. My old Razr (which I loved) had a small gap at the top of the screen that used to catch my hair next to my ear (if you have ever plucked one of those it smarts!) the thought of getting that replaced was laughable at the time. I dont think we should take advantage of returns policies when the product works in every other way.

I agree that if it was very noticeable and you felt like you might cut yourself on it I would change mine. But not the way it is.

Scammer and a English teacher too! You should be ashamed of yourself.

That would be "an English teacher".

I was giving Apple the benefit of the doubt. In my case, and many others on this forum, it's been 100%. All four of the iPhones I've had (including the one I'm using now) have had defects. Light leaks, depressed sleep/wake button, non-responsive home button, uneven glass/chrome. The list goes on. I've simply given up on getting a good one because I'm worried the next phone I'm given is going to have bigger/more problems.

I've got my replaced, part of the screen(youtube, maps, weather) was not working, after restoring and going to genius bar, they gave me a new phone right away, and then few month later, it fell from my bed(about 1 foot drop) on a glass cup and the screen cracked, so I couldnt get it replased, its funny since my phone fell about 20 times since then and the screen never cracked more. :( I can't wait for a new phone to come out, hopefully in June.

Craziness

People need to live with their own misfortune without bringing hardship to the manufacturer of a product, a great one too. If you drop your iPhone, scratch it, blend it or whatever, it is your fault. I can't believe the ammount of nit-picking about small little defects that may be Apple's fault or the person that ownes the device. I would rather my device have some character, i.e. scratches or other imperfections caused by my own carelessness. Granted I do have the invisible shield. But come on people it was your fault so live with it or get a case. This also has the same kind of solution as an auto mechanic that I know says about noises inside the car, turn up the radio, or bluntly "deal with it".

ha ha

I think Apple should replace my MacBook for having a scratch on it. Go :apple:.

Good post my friend! I don't think people realize that this is the second generation iPhone THERE WILL BE FLAWS. Get over it get a case to protect your valuable personal items that you intend on using for at least 2 years. I understand if there are some legit manufacturing defects and your device is still under warranty then by all means use it or get the famed AppleCare protection plan. But for a scratch or a little crack in the case that was most likely caused by carelessness or misuse deal with it. It builds character for your iPhone and makes it "unique".

Fortunately (unfortunately?) every one of the six iPhones I've been through has had legitimate problems which has allowed me to exchange them once I scratch them up too much. Defective battery, no in-call audio, uneven screen/bezel/buttons, pathetically weak vibrate, light leak, large chunks of dust and debris under the glass, and micro-cracks in the casing. Yay for quality control.

It's a fact that a certain minority never bother to take care of or look after their possessions properly. Others are just naturally clumsy - they were just born that way!

However, one would never blame someone, who, after reading the above catalogue of problems with the iPhone, if he immediately crossed it off his "Must buy" list!!

After all, the iPhone is not an inexpensive item and surely "genuine" faults (apart from fair wear and tear) are unacceptable. Surely, if you buy a car and a wheel keeps falling off, you take it back and get it fixed - what's more, it shouldn't happen in the first place!!

I must admit to being more than surprised to read all these tales of woe. In my experience with their iPods and computers, Apple have always been one step ahead of the competition regarding engineering design and production quality.

I wonder what, if anything, has gone wrong! Or is it just the case that, as originally stated, some people are just, well, clumsy. :)
