What kind of question is that bro? 🤣
Do you still own dial-up internet at home? Why do you upgrade to faster internet in the past lol

Obviously not, but we aren’t talking about a difference between dial up and cable modem speeds here. When LTE is already able to download at 50Mbps+ and 5G might be hitting 100 or even 200Mbps now it’s not really a significant difference. Especially considering that most people really aren’t downloading huge amounts of data with their cell phones. Obviously 5G is capable of a lot more, but it’s definitely not there yet. At least not in most areas.

And again, this is all in light of the OP’s original question of “What is the biggest difference between the iPhone 11 and the iPhone 12”. I’m not saying that 5G is bad or that I don’t want 5G. I’m just saying that right now I personally don’t see 5G as a big distinguishing feature.

Just FYI the OtterBox case for the 12 Pro Max doesn't have the tall ridge on the sides so it feels much thinner than the 11 Pro Max. The edges on the top and bottom are the same I think. For me that's a huge difference. It feels like a much thinner phone. This is XS Max but I have a friend with the 11 Pro Max and it's the same
Which case is this?

Gotta be honest I’m very surprised at how much 5G coverage there is. According to many it wasn’t as prevalent, but I’m seeing it frequently.
5G is in many places now. But it's just the lowest level of 5G. The fastest form won't be here in many places for probably 2-3 years.

In my area 5G is just slightly better than LTE. I did drive over to a T-Mobile tower tonight and the speeds were fantastic....221 mbps down and 73.7 up. But you have to be very close to a tower to get those.

Out of curiosity, why do you say that? What benefits are you getting from 5G? In this area, at least, right now 5G speeds are comparable to LTE speeds and the 5G radio uses more power than the LTE radio, so I can get the same speed with less battery life with 5G.

And even if 5G did offer higher speed I’m not sure how beneficial that would be. LTE speeds are more than enough for streaming 4K video and downloading apps and browsing the web.

I’m sure that as technology changes and improves 5G will become a critical feature, but right now it really seems like more hype and marketing than anything with actual tangible benefits.
I’m aware not everyone has this, but 5G near my place is pretty good. It’s not the max speeds they advertise but I’m definitely seeing a big difference.

No question, it’s the RAM. It’s incredibly noticeable how apps stay in memory so much longer than they did on any previous-gen phone.

For my uses, this has been the #1 best thing.

Anyone else? #1 favorite feature as compared to the 11 Pro Max?
I'm going to say size. The size is the biggest difference. ;)

Tim

The question is, given the above differences, are they enough to upgrade from the Pro Max 11?
The more I use the PM 12, the more I realize what an awesome phone the PM 11 is.
My main 2 reasons to upgrade was the camera and 5G. Except for photos in dark conditions I can’t tell the difference in my pictures or my videos.
In regards to 5G, it is a non factor at this time. For the most part 4G is faster then my Verizon 5G, when I can get 5G.
Still trying to make up my mind if I am going to keep the PM 12.

im not impressed to say the least. the new design is nice touch but ... I could have my 11 in my hand and not know the diff.

What you're probably seeing is Sub-6 5G. It's not the super fast mmWave 5G but still should be faster than LTE. mmWave just has way too many issues to make it practical for most areas. I'm seeing lots of 5G as well. It's my understanding that if you have it set to auto it will show 5G when it's available but only uses it when needed to save battery.
I'm only seeing a moderate amount of 5G where I live but I live in a mountainous area that will probably take forever to get the 5G Ultra Wideband in my ares. With this phone, I'm actually seeing faster LTE than 5G and I don't have 5G at my house. The ultimate test will be when I head to work tomorrow. There is an area near my office where my service on my XS Max was non-existent, I couldn't' even get a text or make a phone call! I really hope this phone is better in that area of town.

For me, it's the camera array. I find it easier to take challenging shots with the 12 PM, almost like I'm not trying to compose something while being mindful of camera limitations. I'm looking forward to ProRAW!

It will take about a week for the phone to optimize, apps settle down, battery starts holding a charge, and charging becomes more consistent.

Mine after 3 weeks has finally stabilized and has better battery capacity than my 11 even with 5G.
That's good to hear! I set mine up Friday evening and had it charging all night. Got up Saturday at 10:45 and by 5:00 I was at 66%. Granted I was using the phone a LOT but that still seemed like a quicker drain than even my XS Max. I was hoping it was because of indexing.

Yeah give it a week or two and your phone will start behaving like a proper iPhone.

Last month when the 12 / 12 Pro were released, there were so many people complaining as soon as they opened their devices.

Now, after a month, you don't hear from them....

Low light photography. Been shooting night photos over the last two nights and there is a noticeable difference from my 11PM to the 12PM.

The cell towers in my city are drunk! 🤦🏼‍♀️
I have seen mention of an app that lets you see where the actual towers are near you. Anybody know what that app is?

I’m right with you. In my opinion the 12 Pro Max with not ready for prime time 5G and the 11 Pro Max are pretty much the same phone. For everyone who doesn’t have an 11 Pro Max the phone is an amazing upgrade.

I haven’t decide for sure yet but I’m leaning on keeping my 11 Pro Max and sending back the 12 Pro Max. Next year is the huge upgrade anyway. Probably no notch, a 120hZ refresh rate, and a fingerprint sensor under the screen. Plus a more modern 5G modem. That’ll be the iPhone to keep for 2 years plus.
