Its more than just a sale. I have been an avid Mac user and promoter of OS X and Macs for many years and own many Apple products. Just laptops alone I am on my third generation Apple computer. But this matter has put a bad taste in my mouth. I have already lost interest in being such an enthusiast and advocate because I found out that no one at Apple really listens nor values our opinions.

In all these years, before this particular change I have never really put it to the challenge because I never disliked a decision Apple made enough to call them, to write an issue, to hack my system at every update, to spend time writing about it, etc. I discovered firsthand that even when you have a legitimate, reasonable and popular request that would be easy to implement and you follow up on it diligently, Apple just does not care. You will just be ignored.

Never once has anyone from Apple even acknowledged that they are giving consideration to the idea of giving back a feature that was there when we purchased Leopard, but they just took away with no way out besides a hack which can break your system if you don't follow proper procedures.

If Apple cannot listen to us, for something so basic, "silly and stupid", I feel like part of what made it cool is gone. Even if you are right about something, you will probably just get stonewalled.

Not only does the survey in this thread speak volumes about popular opinion, the few people who debated for opaque menus lost the debate. But anyway that does not matter, we don't want to force translucent menus on them just as we did not want opaque menus forced on us. We just want an option out, even if its hidden, to be able to change the menus without a hack. Its really so little to ask and a no brainer to fix if only someone were listening...

Just like you said... the menus looked so nice in 10.5.1... it's really too bad that they just decided to remove a "feature" for no reason. The translucent menu wasn't a bug. I agree with you... there should be an option (just like the option for the translucent menu bar)... why should everyone have to suffer because a COUPLE of people complained that they can't read their menus (and I have no idea what kind of background they're using, but if you're using a background that is SOOOO confusing that even reading the menus is hard, then it's time to change the BACKGROUND, not the menus.

Has anyone confirmed whether or not the 2008-005 security update conflicts with the transparent menu hack? I assume not, but to be on the safe side...

^ Nevermind my question above. I backed up with Time Machine, then updated OS X with the aformentioned update, and as expected everything works fine.

Baaa!!!!

Why dont they bring back translucent menus? Honestly, damn Apple!

Anyone upgrade to iTunes 8 and have problems opening it? Mine just crashes as soon as I launch it... I think it might be the translucent menu hack from 10.5.1. What do you guys think?

Same thing here. As soon as a few tasks are finished I'll reverse the hack and see if that fixes it.

Edit: Confirmed. iTunes 8 crashes with the hack in place. Undoing the hack solves the problem. I tested this over several hack/unhack cycles.

We're screwed. :(

Hah, I also can confirm that the menu hack breaks iTunes 8. Damnit... this sucks. Well... I guess we better just start getting used to Apple's way or no way.

On top of that, iTunes isn't recognizing my iPod, so now I get to go through Apple's iPod Touch Troubleshooting Assistant when all I want to do is update my @#$% playlists for tomorrow's commute.

edit: The other USB port worked.

How do we know its the hack? There are many people having trouble with iTunes 8. Check out Apple discussions. For some its album artwork that causes iTunes 8 to crash! I don't see how the transparent menu hack and iTunes 8 are related.

I had to downgrade back to iTunes 7 too. Then I was prompted in 7 to install iPod software v2.1 on my Touch. After that, it tells me I cannot use my Touch with iTunes until I upgrade to iTunes 8.

WTF!?!

I'm telling you guys, once this laptop is obsolete, I am switching to Linux. I have had less problems and better support on free software.

Don't upgrade to 2.1 if you cannot upgrade iTunes to v8. It happened to me that I could upgrade to 2.1 from iTunes 7, now I cannot sync with iTunes until I upgrade to 8. What a mess!! They should really start drug screening Apple developers.

I just saw your confirmation

I have a new expression and this is the very first time I will use it. It was many, many months in the making, and well documented why in this thread. In addition to this thread, I have written feedback to Apple, talked to Apple reps, written about it in Apple Discussions, etc. I have been completely stonewalled. The only time Apple acknowledged my presence was after I said that Apple ignores customers. Then I got an email about the Terms and Conditions of using Apple Discussions. Never one sentence in response to this question. Now I can say it:

APPLE SUCKS!

I'm guessing it has something to do with the new grid view ... seriously different UI look and feel there. No other drastic changes I can see. There must be something missing from the 10.5.1 files that it needs.

Now if there's a way to disable the grid, we might have a fighting chance.

Such a shame

Here's an extract from the error report produced when iTunes 8 crashes:

Thread 0 Crashed:
0 com.apple.HIToolbox 0x969b3958 PushEventHandler(EventTargetRec*, long (*)(OpaqueEventHandlerCallRef*, OpaqueEventRef*, void*), unsigned char, unsigned long, EventTypeSpec const*, void*, OpaqueEventHandlerRef**) + 28

Has anyone tried removing the hack, installing iTunes 8, switching off Grid View, then reapplying the hack?

Just thinking, Grid View is the biggest change visually (as pointed out in the post above)

If we can't get round this, looks like it's back to solid menus :(

Yep. Confirmed. I've really enjoyed having the translucent menus in all of my Leopard updates (I just reapply the hack after installing a point update). After installing iTunes 8, I struggled to figure out what the problem was--why was it not launching? After troubleshooting a bit and doing everything I could think of, I tried re-installing the 10.5.4 Combo update. Bingo.

This kind of sucks. No more "slickness" to the UI for us, I suppose.

I have concluded that opensource software is the way to go. Its not just this issue but this issue is a good example. We really made a good faith effort to inform Apple over a long period of time and to ask them politely to get back something we purchased, being flexible for a different solution since 10.5.2 released. This thread is proof most people want what we've requested.

What did we get in return: Stonewalled, and now this...

My Linux set-up looks very slick (I bet many of you would be surprised how much progress has been made) and I am confident they will never hardcode something like this because it is just plain idiotic.

I'm through praising Apple, influencing people to switch, buying Apple products. I'm not planning to grow long hair, nor to put a "live free or die" bumper sticker on my car, though :). Au revoir :apple:

Btw, I would stay clear of iTunes 8! This is what the top related page of topic titles looks like on Apple Discussions:

OK, aside from trolling for linux, let's turn this into a discussion of how we might get the translucent menus back. If anyone discovers anything serendipitously, post it here.

Edit: Didn't notice Mr. Lizard had already posted this:

Stratus, do you know if the system will boot if we replace everything but HIToolbox? (Not to say that the other files wouldn't crash iTunes given the chance, but we do have a primary suspect here.)

Seriously which Apple Software has been released in the wild unscathed and near perfect? Dunno if Apple people are far too busy in visiting SJ at his home and giving him weight gain advice.......

If you mean upgrade to iTunes 8 & have transparent menus: It looks like you'd have to know how to reverse engineer some binary files, understand the big picture with little context, (rewrite), then merge the code needed for translucent menus and iTunes 8. Then at every update (not just system updates, but now as we have just seen, possibly at Application updates) you might need to re/write & recompile the code. If you find someone who will do this for you, you should trust them that no other code is added.

This is why since February we have been enjoying the hack and in parallel asking Apple to provide a solution, even if its a non-GUI, command line tweak. Did they listen?: no, rather they made the hack impossible to use with new software. AFAIK, of all the people who wrote feedback and called, including me, Apple never took a second to acknowledge us. The only time Apple acknowledged my presence about this issue, it was the time they reminded me of Apple terms and conditions because, after many months of getting stonewalled, I dared to write that it was unfair of Apple to take away translucent menus with no options on Apple Discussions.

Good luck!

I dunno, my memory may be off but it seems like Apple has been getting sloppier & sloppier with iTunes releases. I still don't see iTunes 8 in Software Updates.

Error reporting suggests that HIToolbox is a direct reason for the crash.

Edit: Looks like I had been beat to the punch.
