Hey guys,

I currently have an Iphone 3G with rogers (about a year left in my contract) and I definitely want to get the Iphone 4.

I see that people talk about grabbing an Iphone 4 off of the apple store unlocked and contract free.

What is the point to this? It was my understanding that a voice plan (with rogers lets say) with NO DATA plan attached would, in the end, cost the user a ton of money in data usage?

I've done some research into this, called a rogers wireless store, and the rep told me that if you had NO DATA PLAN and used data it would be at the rate of 5 cents per MB. I found that extremely cheap for not having a data plan as 100mb of data would only cost you $5 (i currently average about 125mb a month of usage).

Then I went to the rogers.com site and saw the legal disclaimer that stated "3 cents a kb for the first 500kb and then 1 cent for every kb after".

Can anyone clarify the NO DATA PLAN usage fees/rates and what are the advantages to getting a phone that is unlocked and contract free?

Thanks in advance!

I can't answer the data plan question but I think for the most part plans are unrelated to why people want to buy the SIM free iPhone's from Apple. I would think the vast majority of people purchasing already have plans and just want to switch to the iPhone 4 without effecting their eligibility for future upgrades and the fact that the phone will work on most of the major carriers in Canada at any time. Getting the device off contract is less about not being restricted to a certain data and/or voice plan but the fact you can change the plan or carriers at any time (unless you're already under contract). Additionally, a factory unlocked iPhone substantially increases resale value.

This is right. People who are purchasing the phone unlocked from Apple will still get a data plan from Rogers or their respective carrier to access data (as you said BigZed, pay-per-use data fees are ridiculous). As Skott said the reasons for buying an unlocked device are increased resale value down the road, you don't have to renew your term (no signing another 3 year contract), if you travel you can easily change SIMs in whatever country you are visiting, and if you decide to change carriers, you can use easily use the phone with the new carrier.

The wait is killing meee!
I just want to be able to preorder, don't mind waiting for it... if only they can just tell us some dates, that would be helpful. Then I can decide if I want to go unlocked or through Rogers.

So basically people dont buy the phones to use data as "pay as you go". That is, to stay away from locking into a 3 year term with data included.

Thanks guys for all your info!

Does rogers still contract people to the plan for nothing? Back when 3GS was out and I was there, if you go on the iphone plan the plan itself came with a contract regardless if you bought the iphone.

Simple and smart reasons for getting it UNLOCKED!

1. YOU own the phone, legally, not Rogers (which owns it for the $199 subsidy price you pay on a 3yr Contract)!!

2. Your FREE to choose your provider(s) WHENEVER YOU choose without having to pay out of your contract price. I'll get to this in a bit. Choices: Rogers, Telus, Bell, Wind/Mobility City in the large metropolis'.

3. should you CHOOSE to purchase on Contract think the following:
3yrs x extimate $49/mth = $1764 [ $588/yr ].
This covers your voice & data service. Now ADD to this if you CANCEL you owe $20/mth up to $400 (yup no longer 200/300) & the remainder of the current bill.
ADD: the Data Contract: which entails another $20/mth up to $200/300 now for cancelling your contract.
NOW should you do this to jump to another provider guess what in 30days you own another $49+tax (again estimated minimum).

So ... $400 VoicePlan cancelling, $200(minimum) Data cancelling (EVEN though Data was already PART of your plan not an add on and your PHONE is subsidized not Data so this is why I consider this extortion), and your current bill. $650+tax (which will now include HST). Let's say you find a better plan & terms on Telus/Bell/Rogers from the current provider you're own, and its been say 6mths into your contract. SHOULD you're USED phone still hold BNIB retail value or market value? ITs a product and like any other amortizes over time thus value falls; but that Contract binds you.

Many on Rogers that got the 3GS where LOCKED into their initial pp at launch and could NOT take advantage of the adjust plan that launch in mid August. Do you see where I'm coming from?!

solution: Purchase it outright, if you don't have a pp ... take one existing from another client that already has a contract ... you get wiggle room since say 1yr may already be used up and also you did NOT get a hardware so next year when iPhone 4s or 4+ or 4HD or iPhone 5 launches you CAN get the HUP (hardware upgrade) at cheaper value should you like contract extension at that time. I have such a plan if you want it.
$65/mth 400 daytime minutes, unlimited eves/wkends starting at 6pm (I think) and 6GB data per month ... with that who NEEDS wifi when your mobile.

Using an iPhone without a data plan will cost you alot of money if one day you accidentally open up a website when you thought you were on WiFi and instead you weren't. The pay-per-use rate does not seem too bad, but loading a full featured page that isn't mobile friendly could cost you quite a bit, and depending on the site could be well over the cost of a monthly data plan.

I would be very careful when using your phone without a data plan. Apple now has the feature to turn off Cellular Data which is great. But if one day you really need/want/curious to see a website on the go, then prepare for a big bill the following month.

If you have NO DATA plan then the price is:
3cents/kb for the first 500kb, then 1 cent/kb after.
So 500kb of data would cost $15... So after you used 500kb in your month, if you were to load another page costing only 500kb then it would cost you only $5. And loading a 1mb page would cost you $10! (err $10.24)

If you have a data plan then the following apply after you used up your monthly data allotment
5cents/MB... This is ONLY IF you have a data plan already and used up your plans data. So if you have a $25 plan and only 500mb, after you used up 500mb then you will be charged 5cents/MB. If you work it out $25/500mb is indeed 5cents/mb

But really how many sites cost only 1mb of data to load? Not many, at least not many non-mobile friendly ones. All these graphics and nonsense eats up your data quickly. This is a huge difference between pay-per-use data vs having a data plan. About $10/mb pay-per-use vs only 5cents/mb, a pure money grab if you ask me.
So do you really want to use your iPhone on the go without a data plan?

Does rogers still contract people to the plan for nothing? Back when 3GS was out and I was there, if you go on the iphone plan the plan itself came with a contract regardless if you bought the iphone.

They offer you perks and whatnot for signing up for a 3yr contract even if you purchased the phone out right.

You have to be very specific and tell them you want a no-term month-by-month plan. You will most likely not get the promotions such as say 6months unlimited calling, early evenings, etc.... You will still get the regular plan features but those bonus features you will not get.

You have to make sure that you tell them this or else if you say "i want... I want... I want..." then chances are that they will add those features in but will not mention about the contract until they are just about to add/change your plan, then they will/should prompt you about the contract length.

Hey guys, I'm sort of a phone noob, and I'd appreciate it if you guys could help me answer some questions.

I'm very interested in getting an iphone 4, but I'm not sure if i want to get it unlocked iphone 4 for $600-$700 or a locked iphone for $200-$300.

I've sort of looked at rogers plans online and the benefits in their $50/mo plan seems suitable for me (assuming they let us use that plan for iphone 4) SEE EDIT AT BOTTOM

http://www.rogers.com/web/Rogers.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=WLRS_Plans

Despite that awesome explanation above about unlocked phones, I still don't really get it.

1. What exactly is a month by month plan? Is it like pay as you go where you literally pay for however many minutes, texts, data you use? Or is it like I can sign up for the $50/mo plan except I'm not locked up for 3 years.

2. Are there any disadvantages at all to a no contract plan? If there aren't why don't people just buy unlocked phones instead of signing a contract? I'm assuming signing a contract gives customers better rates that will eventually be cheaper than going on a month by month plan.

3. I understand that sometimes rogers comes out with promotional plans that may be cheaper than what they currently offer. If I'm on a contract, will I be able to switch plans?

4. Finally, what would be suitable for me? Locked or unlocked?

-I don't exactly plan on switching carriers... I don't really see whats so bad about Rogers and I'm currently a rogers customer.
-I sometimes travel to hong kong, and it would be nice to be able to use my iphone there. I assume the iphone needs to be unlocked, but couldn't we unlock iphones by jailbreaking? Would jailbreaking slow up my iphone? I do have a spare import unlocked phone that I could use instead of my iphone if I do travel.
-I don't use voice too much so 200 minutes is good. I text a lot more than voice, and I would like to be able to use data (though I believe 500mb is more than enough).
-I would like to have caller ID.

Thanks for answering my questions! Please take the time to read and answer all the questions!

EDIT: I just noticed on that page that the $65 and $80 plans are tagged with iphone. Does that mean those plans are available exclusively for iphones, or does that mean iphone users are ONLY ALLOWED to use one of those 2 plans.

Hey there,

I apologize in advance for not answering all your questions as I'm typing on my iPhone.

I'll try to sum it up in a couple sentences...

Myself, I'm going to purchase the phone through Rogers. I believe they offer the best service around IMHO. I don't mind signing another contract for 3 years and am comfortable in the fact I won't be able to upgrade to iPhone 5....I mean how much different/better can Apple possibly make it next year. I think it will be akin to the 3G to the 3GS. A lot of people didn't feel it was much of an improvement from the prior year...anyhow that's just speculation though.

You're right if you purchase the locked phone you can simply unlock it yourself and use it on any carrier over seas. Plus with jailbreaking it will add a ton more functionality.

Well that's it for me, hope that helps you a little bit, I'm sure someone else will pick up from where I left off...

There's pros and cons to both ways of purchasing.

First off though, whether you purchased it subsidized through Rogers, or unsubsidized from Apple, you OWN the phone, not Rogers.

For a lot of people already in a contract, I don't think it's a bad option to renew the contract and save $500 through the subsidy.

Of course, purchasing directly and unlocked from Apple is a great option. Will be great for travelling and future resale value.

Those are definitely the pros of having an unlocked phone.

Switching carriers is not. No matter where you go, you will pay the same. It's the big 3 we are talking about. And if you keep switching, you'll never have an opportunity for a retention plan as you already ditched one carrier for the next.

exactly.. who really would even bother switching between the big three who all essentially have the same plans/BS?

I think the only thing that would have made it more interesting is if iPhone 4 included the AWS band, as i'm sure theres many people who would think about jumping ship if wind/mobi become good alternatives.

Can the iPhone run on Wind/Mobility City though? I know previously the spectrum's Wind/Mobility City operated on were incompatible with the iPhone, has that changed? Regardless, I may be alone but I'm fairly happy with Rogers in terms of service and plans. I've never had a major issue aside from their pretty lousy long distance packages, I signed up for Skype and for less than what I pay for long distance I get more than enough minutes using Skype. As for switching carriers, while the plans on other carriers are comparable, I suppose you could say the fact you can take your device to another carrier gives you some leverage when negotiating a plan. Before Bell and Tellus came into the picture, if you had an iPhone, Rogers pretty much had no reason to negotiate with you. On another note, does anyone have any idea where this July 13th launch date rumor is coming from? I've read it at a few sites but they make no mention of sources, just state it as fact. I'm more inclined to believe the July 23rd rumors as it seems to come from black out dates for Apple/Rogers/Bell employees, etc. However, I think both dates are still early and honestly don't expect a launch before July 30th.

AFAIK, the iPhone does not work with Wind. Though I'm not sure if it doesn't work at all, or if you just don't get 3G. I think maybe it works but you don't get 3G data speeds.

Definitely doesn't work on Wind or Mobilicity.

My experience with this is the carriers will offer MUCH better rates if you stick with them for at least a year and then use your no contract angle. Certain carriers are willing to go alot farther then others as well. Rogers frankly will not budge at all I find. Bell is willing to go alot further to keep you onboard.

Typical example I can give is one of Bell's competitors will offer a better rate and I simply called Bell up and say I'm thinking of switching to the carrier that has the better rate. I then get transferred to retention and they either match or beat the competing rate. I'd imagine if you did this too often they might not be so flexible but doing it on the rare occasion seems to work out fine.

I switched from Rogers in December and bought my latest smart phone and went no contract with Bell. The rate I'm paying now is about 1/2 the price of the plan I had with Rogers and I have way more options and freebies right now with Bell then I did before with Rogers.

Plus there’s the added bonus if my financial situation changes or I don't need the phone anymore for whatever reason I can simple cancel and I have no penalties so the freedom is really nice.

serious flaws in your plan,

HUP is reset when you do a transfer of ownership, rogers gives better plans to people who are willing to go on contract.

i pay

53$ a month for

unlimited text
6gb data
350 mins
early 5pm eve + weekends
caller id
visual vm
unlimited incoming calls

which after a year with rogers you can easily get some serious discounts by calling customer retentions.

im not trying to support rogers(or any cell company)....but contracts are almost unavoidable these days.

that is an amazing plan.. you spoke with an awesome rep lol.

i have some bullshhh

$45/month
callerid
300min
500mb of data
unlimited texts
evening and weekends free starting at 6
100 long distance minutes

uhhhh and some other useless addons.

i really need to negotiate with retentions, however.. i never go over anything.

i just WISH they didn't charge me $7 for callerID, that screwed up my entire plan. i've been with them so long and they can't even credit me $8.

ive never used pay as you go, but I can call rogers and tell them to block all my data and i wont get charged a cent when im not using wifi

Rogers no longer offers blocking of data, but if you have it now great. But they will no longer be adding it for those who want it now.

So I wonder when the **** we are finally gonna get iPhone 4. I'm sick of waiting.

You're not going to like this then. A "tipster" is saying that the iPhone 4 will launch on August 2nd in Canada. I call BS, but who knows.

We need an official release date from Apple/Rogers! Let's go already!
