I'm really hoping apple.ca does a pre-order for the unlocked iPhone 4...

I have a decent contract with Fido and would be eligible for an upgrade as of August 5th but due to the U2 360 tour being postponed I have some money free'd up.

I'd rather pay the extra $$ for a unlocked vs lock in for another 2 years and have to wait a full 2 years to get another new iPhone....

Apple currently sells iPhone with contract for carriers (activations, upgrades etc)
Any chance those phones would be unlocked, given that it's bought from the Apple Store, even though there is a contract.

The way I see it, the providers have you locked in with the ETF, so no need to lock the phone.

Firstly, I not even sure if in Canada Apple sells iPhones for all the phone companies, I'd be surprised if they did.

Secondly, if they do sell them or did in the future, I don't think they would have them unlocked, the phone companies would make sure of that.

The only way I know of getting a factory unlocked iPhone in Canada would be to purchase it at retail price from Apple. Currently only the 3GS 8gig is available.

Hey Draz...do you think Apple will start selling their unlocked iPhone 4's on launch day?? Or wait a couple of days/weeks for the phone companies to sell their stock??

It is hard to say because they havent done phone sales in Canada yet. Just have to wait for the anouncement from them....

and this is why I laugh at the Americans :p cause we have five options and they're stuck wih GAYT&T.

come on iphone hurry up and get to Canada already.

Virgin is with Bell.
Fido is with Rogers.

So really, only just three...

LOL sorry i have to say this. I'm Canadian as well, well atleast lived in Canada for a while, born somewhere else though. The point is, they are laughing at us because Apple treated us a third world country, letting japan get it before us. So we can't make fun of them, atleast they have it on lunch day, and we are still waiting like dogs.

Treated us like a 3rd world country?????

Really?!??!?!
Come on! There is a lot more to it than just deciding, "oh let's not launch in Canada till later."

The logistics of deliverying 1.7 millions phones in the first 3 days would've been insane to begin with.
Then you have to factor in trade duties and import costs and telecommunications laws and regulatory requirements.
Then after that you have to negotiate with the different carriers about there cut and what not.

There is just too much going on which we don't know about or are aware of here.
I don't think Apple treated Canada like a third world country.

And plus, our population is barely 1/10th of the States, so realistically Apple probably just made sure that the top 5 countries where they knew they would get tons of sales right before the end of their fiscal quarter were the ones to get the phone first. Then the roll out to the rest of the world will happen over the next couple months.

Well I keep hearing July 23rd as the release date...so everyone keep your fingers crossed!....oh and your toes too!

3rd world country? Our Apple stores will be selling the iPhone 4 factory unlocked. Not to mention of course Japan got it first, you can't spit across a sidewalk in Tokyo without hitting someone with an iPhone up to their ear.

Hey guys, I might have asked this in this thread already, but oh well.

When I sell my iPhone, in order to wipe it, do I just go to "Erase all content and settings" and also remove my SIM Card? Anything else I need to do before selling?

Whoever buys it, do they just put their own SIM Card in it, and then they're all set and it will work for them on the Rogers network as if it was theirs originally?

Never sold an iPhone before so I wanted to know these things. I have a buyer coming by tomorrow so I need to know quickly. Thanks.

Is there really any difference between the factory unlock from Apple and the inevitable iOS4 software unlock through pwnage or whatever tool?

With the factory unlock you don't have to worry that future software updates will re-lock the phone. (My understanding was that if you use a software unlock, there's a chance of a future update re-locking it... someone please correct me if I'm wrong.)

while that may be true the prices will still vary at least

you make a valid point but, still waiting an extra month isnt that bad

Well I'm not sure if Rogers has microsims in stock yet....but you could always easily just cut the sim into a micro and from what I've heard it will work fine.

It's super easy to cut, I tried it myself and it worked perfectly, I used a sharp exacto blade and the thing practically cut itself.

Hello,

I recently bought an iphone 4 from the States, unfortunately it is locked, I used the cut my sim technique from my old iphone's sim card and it fits into the micro sim tray perfect. My problem is is that it doesnt recognize the sim because it is probably locked. Would someone help me find a solution for this? Im stuck with an 800$ locked iphone 4. Plleeease. Im a newbie.

Thanks

You're going have to wait until the iPhone 4 can be jailbroken.

Your SIM card is yours, keep it as it contains info on your account and if you give it to someone else then I hope you enjoy paying their bill.

Yes you can choose that erase all content option. But you can also connect the phone up to iTunes and set it up as a new phone. This will totally make sure that the phone is setup with zero information on it.

Once someone else puts in their SIM card then the phone will work as if it was theirs.

Thanks so much. Yes of course I would remove the SIM Card. :D I'll do both of those things I guess. When I set it up as a new phone, is my backup still on my computer? I'm going to restore from my 3GS backup when I get my iPhone 4.

I sold my iPod Touch recently on ebay, and I just did the "Erase all content and settings". I never set it up as a new iPod, though. Too late now, it's already shipped. It was prompting me to connect to iTunes so that's a good sign.

Using the Erase all content and setting should be sufficient actually, not setting up as New sorry.
