what is colour gamut?

I play Field Runners HD. One can use a go back if they feel they could have done better and increase their chance of winning the level instead of starting all over.

I used a go back on this forum. I have no idea what Color Gamut is because it was never mentioned on the forum back then.

You do recognize the difference between an iPHONE and an iPAD, right?

You made a claim that Apple doesn't market gamut, I countered. You don't need to be so defensive; the people who notice and are up-in-arms about the gamut issue have every right to be. It's there and almost certainly intentional given Apple's history. It's disappointing due to the price increase. Doesn't make us fastidious, perfectionist snobs.

I ain't a lawyer but the last part of that statement cannot be proved. Folks have been sued for much less spreading bad info. I'd would be careful, just saying.

If Apple came out publicly about the color being being the same between the two Minis before release, people would still go for the rMini because it is a big upgrade over the previous.

Specifically, the first iPod touch with Retina, and the first iPod touch with 4" display both exhibited worse color output than their iPhone siblings. Same here. Know what all three have in common? They're cheaper, and Apple makes less money off them.

You really need to follow the context of the discussion and not take my posts out of context. If you go back and actually READ the thread, we were talking about the iPad Mini.

If you feel like a fastidious, perfectionist snob, that's on you. I have not said any such thing.

Can we get an update on the rMini compared with the Air using the color calibration app? Did I miss it.

I found this thread very informative vs the other threads (although entertaining in a Bravo TV sort of way).

It's not and the detail is probably bad focus on the iPhone. The color is more true on the full size. My car is a unique color.

This is not my image it's from VW vortex, bear in mind I took that parking lot shot with a 3GS in mid day sun. I promise I'll do a real shoot out. It's probably going to be tomorrow. I'll put them on a white board at f11 and focus manually with spot metering and a custom white balance. It just takes a. Bit of time and I had clients today and physical therapy.

Glad it was helpful! When I had my lsb m3 I wanted the license plate ppasmrf

When the two devices are calibrated with a spyder 4 pro and their app, it's virtually indistinguishable which means calibration.

I'll be quite honest, the comparison here doesn't look all that awful. The Air's display does look a decent amount closer to the original than the mini's but it's not inherently "off" in this particular instance. The mini does look obviously less saturated. I'd be curious to see a comparison with a less unique looking color and something that doesn't show drastic reflections - like this metallic paint. Something like a brown texture or blue ocean wave. Maybe a red couch

This is definitely the best representation of the difference I've seen in any pictures. I think the magenta is very disappointing and the fire engine red turning to a sunburnt tomato red is highly disappointing....considering red is my favorite color. Looks like it won't be on my retina mini :D

You're right on the mark. Apple makes less profit off their lower end devices so they cripple the overall quality of little things in order to raise the profit margin. To be honest I didn't think they would do it here with the mini because the whole purpose was to get the specs up with the Air, but it makes absolute sense considering they obviously make less money off the mini (although it sells with the same specs) and so they have to keep up that profit margin somehow.

I don't fault them for this, because they probably have some absurdly high minimum profit margin requirements, but it's just a damn shame to be honest.

No. H00ligan explained the display color are set in stone, the app only allows for a simulation of changed color, and does not stay once you leave the app.

Android (at least touchwiz does) allows for a color "filter" - but it is not widely used. Apple would likely never implement this as pretty much all of their displays (except for the MacBook Air - and now iPad Mini Retina) have accurate displays, so inaccurate color reproduction is basically dying tech and it's something I figured we were all done with by (basically) 2014....but I guess not :apple:

After using my retina mini for a few hours I really don't notice what I'm actually missing. Size and weight is nice coming from an ipad3.

That was my experience as well after 36h. Most everything looked great, even if ios 7 was a bit crashy (ex. settings-> double tap Brightness & Wallpaper). The form factor and build quality of the mini is amazing. Then I decided to watch Cloud Atlas last night on the rmini. I was really surprised at how awful I found the color representation. I really want to like the mini, but as primarily a media consumption device for me, that kinds of kills it. I used my ipad 3 for the remaining half of the movie.

Maybe Apple is trying to be shrewd with the profit margins, maybe this is just what they could make during their engineering cycle for it. I don't really care. I was looking forward to upgrading from my ipad 3, and it would be, but with compromises. Faster, lighter, fits in purses better, sleeker, lightning connector, movies look worse... At $750, I choose not to step down in movie display quality, so it's going back today. :(

I have quite a large amount of respect for you.

Enjoy your iPad 3, and hope to god that apple cares enough to fix this on the 3rd generation - although my guess is they won't (for the same reasons they didn't bother this time)
