Just a reminder for people in Europe/UK there is the philips brilliance 27e3u7903. it got bad reviews last autumn and went out of stock, but now it's back. maybe they fixed the problems....

I was about to pull the trigger on this one because it’s a glossy 5K but I read a review saying it has a bit of grain compared to the ASD. Frustrating.

It also looks really good except that ugly non retractable webcam sticking out.

"Daisy-chain up to four Studio Display monitors" is listed as a feature on the new Studio Display.

AFAIK, since the M1, all Macs have been limited to 2 physical displays per TB port (excluding virtual displays like Display link). How does this work? Apple's own Support documentation does not seem to have been updated to address this yet.

TB5 offers double the bandwidth of TB4 and the M5 Pro and M5 Max have dedicated TB5 controllers for each port as opposed to the shared configuration of earlier M-model Apple Silicon SoCs. So I presume daisy-chaining four Studio Displays will require a TB5 port and an M5 Pro or M5 Max SoC.

The display has its own SOC so it can drive its own displays?

4 @120Hz on a single port?!
Pretty sure only the base Studio Display can do it, so that would be 4@60Hz. You are probably still limited to two Studio Display XDRs.

It’s in the M5-family MacBook Pro specs: M5 can do two, M5 Pro can do three, M5 Max can do four.

I think @tetsuos is right that the support documentation for M4 Pro/Max and earlier has not yet been updated for daisy chain. IIRC, changes like that won’t appear until after the new product ships on March 11.

I guess that could be one of the reasons why they specify macOS 26.3 in the tech specs. That could be a requirement for daisy chaining more than two on earlier Thunderbolt 5 models. But you are probably right, and more than two is limited to M5 Pro/Max.

Seriously… It seems like ”releases” of monitors are total jokes, months later they can’t be purchased.

Are the Thunderbolt controllers in the M5 Max modified to have 4 DisplayPort In adapters? In that case, any method of adding 4 displays should work - it wouldn't require a specific display from Apple. You just need a DisplayPort Out adapter to connect a display to a Thunderbolt chain. A Thunderbolt 1 or 2 dock only has one DisplayPort Out Adapter. Thunderbolt 3 or 4 dock can have two. A Thunderbolt 4 dock can have 3 downstream Thunderbolt ports, but only two of them can have a display since the Thunderbolt 4 controller only has two DisplayPort Out adapters. A Thunderbolt 5 controller in a Thunderbolt 5 dock has 3 DisplayPort Out adapters.

A Thunderbolt Display is basically a Thunderbolt dock which uses one of the DisplayPort Out adapters of its Thunderbolt controller for its display. The LG UltraFine 5K display uses both DisplayPort Out Adapters because it is a tiled display (2560x2880 for each half of the display). The LG UltraFine 5K doesn't have a downstream Thunderbolt port because the data lines are used for the 2nd DisplayPort Out adapter. A Thunderbolt 1 display doesn't have a second DisplayPort Out adapter so a Thunderbolt display or dock is required for chaining a second display to that display.

If chaining 4 Studio Displays doesn't use DisplayPort Out adapters for all 4 displays, then it means some proprietary method of outputting display data to the display is being used. Does this proprietary method involve the CPU or GPU? Does it reduce the performance of the CPU / GPU?

Alternatively, DisplayPort MST? That would be weird.

Need someone with an M5, M5 Pro, M5 Max to dump ioreg to count the DisplayPort In adapters of the Thunderbolt controllers.

What ioreg command do you use to find this? I'm thinking maybe you could run this on a display model when M5 hits the stores.

MSI was at least honest when they said at CES that they were using the event to gauge interest in putting the monitors they had one display into general production. I expect many other companies do the same, but do not publicly say so.

I also figured that anyone selling a 5k 27” miniLed was waiting to see where Apple set their price for the identical panel that they are all going to use

Hmmm. I have a different take on that.
I figure MSI is waiting to hear from LG how many useable 5K miniLED panels will be available from Apple's QC reject pile...

However speculative that turns out to be, whatever driver board MSI puts in their monitor, it won't have Apple's A19Pro+NE-driven backlight control algorithm.

So it won't be 'identical'.

Great. I could not care less about that. It’s certainly not something I’m interested in paying a premium for.

Same here. I almost ordered the Kuycon G27P yesterday from Alibubba, but some inner warning system was going off. I can wait to see what LG comes out with, and to see if Kuycon is doing a refresh on their 5K monitors.

Laminating a 5K panel onto glass is not trivial. AFAIK no Chinese company other than Kuycon have the machinery to do this. So either this is:

a) Fake specs/fake product photos. You end up with a matte monitor.
b) A short run Kuycon product with a slightly different case design, so equivalent to G27P in quality.
c) A Kuycon G27P that was rejected by Kuycon themselves for quality control reasons.

Not worth the hassle of finding out in my opinion.

I was happy to see Apple put out a 120-Hz 5K 27" display, something quite a number of Mac Rumors members wanted...and disappointed to see it at a price I suspect very few will pay. But it's got more going on than that. Which raises a question.

I take it 120-Hz 5K will probably mean Thunderbolt 5, and even Thunderbolt 4 added to the cost of a display over USB-C. A higher refresh rate adds cost, and such a display as yet targets a niche market.

Those of you with a sense of what features tend to be associated with what added end user cost, my question to you...let's say ASUS, which has a 5K 60Hz 27" USB-C display that, last I checked (been awhile) was around $800, decides to put out a higher end version identical except for 120Hz refresh rate and Thunderbolt 5. What do you estimate that would likely cost?

No mini-LED or extreme brightness, just those changes. What is the premium to get that likely to be in non-Apple competitors? Any thoughts?
