The market for displays that can easily connect to both Macs and gaming PCs/game consoles on the same desk is VANISHINGLY small, yet the nerds on these forums act like it's some egregious error on Apple's part not to emphasize it. Ignoring this irrelevant user group is intentional.
Here's the problem with that logic...it's not just them. The same HDMI port that lets people hook a gaming PC and/or game console to the display also lets the home Mac user hook his work PC to it if he brings work home. It's true there probably aren't many people using an Apple Studio Display as a primary gaming display with a console or Windows-based gaming PC. It's also true there are people with both a Windows PC and a Mac. It's not uncommon on MacRumors to see posts asking about KVM switches, and some of those requests are from dual platform users.

It's also true that people who make the painful splurge to get an ASD may wish to wring maximum usage out of it.

I don't dispute it's probably a minority fraction of users; I'm just saying the number of people who'd benefit from a latest generation HDMI port, for example, probably isn't vanishingly small. It would be interesting to know a %, though!

Developers with both a Mac and PC at the same desk are welcome to purchase any of the hundreds of 3rd party displays capable of easily switching between them.

This group (just like the dual box Mac gamers and the work PC/home Mac multitaskers) is a VANISHINGLY small market that Apple rightly ignores.

So are the people who only use a Mac. People who occasionally use a PC in addition to a Mac would probably desire an ASD for much the same reasons Mac-only users would. If you meant they can pick up a 2nd display for the PC, that takes more desk space and the kind of person who'd pay the premium for an ASD for his Mac might not be satisfied with a cheap 2nd display for occasional PC use.

Is 'vanishingly small' an opinion/impression, or are there numbers to make it an objective observation? Are we talking 1 in 10, 1 in 20, 1 in 50, etc.? Just saw a Facebook video on how with subjective terms like that people often have widely varied understandings.

I don't dispute it's a minority share (my impression; I don't have hard numbers).

An interesting question, given how trivial I imagine it would be for Apple to include the HDMI port, is are they 'ignoring' that non-Mac ASD user-wanna be market...or deliberately excluding it, making it less convenient so as to make the ASD more an Apple ecosystem thing? Sounds to me more like deliberate design than a product of indifference. Apple scrutinizes details.

Interesting that denying even a fraction of users cheap-to-add functionality is 'rightly,' but then that's a value judgment.

seems this has devolved in to a MacRumors thread once again 😉

anyway, no pre order yet in Canada and I've got the $$$ burning a hole in my pocket for this, though we'll see what the Canadian price is. I can swallow the US price exchanged directly, but it doesn't always go that way

This WikiPost and forum thread is about *all* 27" 5K displays. The fact there are hundreds of other displays is not relevant here.

Anyone with a decent PC doesn't need HDMI or DisplayPort input. Apple's premium buyers generally don't have cheap PCs, so the whole question is moot for what I imagine is the majority of macOS users at home who have a Windows PC for work. My wife's ThinkPad X1 with Thunderbolt 4 from her employer works perfectly with our Studio Displays at home, camera and all, including my new XDR (@60Hz). Apple hasn't "ignored" her.

The key point you're missing in your attempts to understand why Apple does what it does isn't that Apple "ignores" their customers -- it's that Apple doesn't see it as their problem. If Sony and Microsoft don't provide USB-C output for their gaming consoles, that's their problem, not Apple's. Gamers should complain to Sony and Microsoft, not Apple. If your employer doesn't provide you with a decent PC, that's your employer's problem, or yours, certainly not Apple's.

A tangent that may still be of interest to people weighing their options for 27" 5K displays. When ASUS came out with their offering for roughly $800 (at release), I noted it was a USB-C display, not Thunderbolt, and that Thunderbolt displays were more expensive. If one was not going to take advantage of substantial hub functionality, and the display in question had a 60-Hz refresh rate (as most do so far), it wasn't clear to me that Thunderbolt offered an advantage. If anything, it would seem to restrict the display to a smaller number of computers (unless they could use other inputs, which means losing whatever benefits Thunderbolt might've offered). I figured it was about hub functionality, but the prior generation (2022) Apple Studio Display was a Thunderbolt 3 display that had no Thunderbolt out port, just 3 10-Gbps USB-C ports. The 2026 version adds a TB5 out.

All that is to lay the context for my question - regarding 5K 27" displays with a 60-Hz refresh rate, do you see substantial added value in a Thunderbolt vs. a USB-C display, other than the potential extra bandwidth for hub-attached peripherals (e.g.: if somebody attaches an external SSD to the display)? And I wonder what the typical cost difference for going Thunderbolt is.

not exactly. With the devices that don't support Thunderbolt it will be used as a usual USB-C DisplayPort alt-mode input.

no. If the 5K@60 monitor doesn't have downstream Thunderbolt port its upstream Thunderbolt port is effectively useless. There are some exceptions though (for example, Apple Studio Display 2022 should support TB to be capable to fully work with older Mac devices that don't support DSC).

I'm using the 5K 165 Hz Asus ROG Strix XG27JCG right now with my M5 MBA as a side screen

While it's better than the nano-texture ASD, the sharpness and brightness aren't good enough. The colors are meh.

Also, I'm not super impressed with the high refresh rate. Sometimes I switch to 60 Hz and I don't feel that much of a difference.

It's nicer of course but I'd rather have the glossy 5K@60 than this matte 5K@165. And it's only 15W Power Delivero so you will need a dock or the power brick.

I think the LG one will be the same (minus the mini-LED).
 
Looks similar to the Asus XG27JCG, although no mention of a KVM I can see.

I agree - I think glossy outweighs everything else.

Here's someone who tried a bunch of 5K and 6K displays. He ended up keeping the new BenQ MA270s even though the other displays beat it in some areas.


I also think the right type of glossy matters. Some people aren't happy with Kuycon products in brighter environments - making glass non-reflective is more difficult than a soft coating (BenQ/old Ultrafine), something only Apple seems to have mastered.

I wouldn't say that Apple is the only one that has mastered the art of offering really good glossy monitors. Dell, for example, did a really, really good job with the UP2715K. It's a shame that Dell went back to using a crappy matte coating on the U3224KB(A).

That's because Dell used plasma deposition for the gloss coating, the same process that Apple uses.

 
XDR is also only IPS, What do you think? Or are you referring to the backlighting technology?

I’m assuming that’s what they mean

When I treat myself to a new monitor it will be 5k miniLed

Whether it ends up being the lg or something else just depends on if anything else actually appears I guess

The xdr offers nothing to me that’s worth 2-3 times the price
