I think we are getting a little off topic here. The discussion on the number of horizontal pixels doesn’t support @Vincent Hanna ‘s point as @jsts post #51 in this thread. The 40” UW offers a 33% increase in screen width Vs. a 32” at the same DPI (5K2K Vs. 4K for example at 140DPI) and it can come to be critically helpful in many productivity applications.

Just disassembled it. The panel looks fine, so nothing left to do than wait for the replacement PSU.

Replaced the PSU and it powered up but the screen flickers. I tried isolating the LED driver and that didn't change anything, so it appears it's the driver board itself and I can't find any online at a reasonable price 😅

RIP Dell UP3218K ... 😭 (that stings, not gonna lie).

It seems I am on the look out for a resolution downgrade as the ASUS ProArt 8K is WAY out of budget 😂

Yes, I continued the conversation a little but then gradually lost interest.
1. The casing they are offering are mostly off the shelf and would likely be VESA 100x100 and therefore no stand. Not a deal breaker.
2. They have many options on casing but the aluminum ones are quite thick. They can do better but then we get into full customization and they started asking for volume to get better pricing.
3. They can absolutely use the R1815 V2 combined with the LG LM315QU1 panel.

The coating comes from LG and is on the panel when they buy it. So it will be a 2H coating period. No other choices.
I think if many people are interested, we may be able to get a group buy going and I can negotiate pricing. I am multilingual and can converse fluently in mandarin with them... My own interest is only medium at this point as I would need to see what the casing really looks like before deciding.
Since my monitor died on me I was wondering if you could share who you were talking to?

I just need a new LM315QU1-SSA2 panel and the R1815 v2 driver board. I can mount it directly in the Dell chassis.

I broke down and picked up an ASUS 32” 6K (delivery expected mid July). This is a knee-jerk purchase because I tire of waiting and tire even more of my 32” 4K’s inappropriate scaling for macOS. This 32” 6K will be replaced whenever a noticeably superior display is released. 40” 8K? An ultrawide 21:9 that hits 40” perhaps?

I just hate having multiple displays and will attempt to replace my 32” 4K and my 27” Studio Display with this one. I know that it’s not quite large enough for my use but I’m not sure how much larger I actually want… with macOS 27 adding explicit support for ultrawides I was annoyed to find LG having cancelled their 34” 5K2K. Ah well. I should be good for a while with the ASUS.

How much was it?

I have this monitor and I'm very happy with it. Bright and the matte on my unit isn't aggressive at all.

A bit sad we’re reduced to talking about 6K options and 8K replacement parts because there are *zero* 8K displays currently in stock (the ASUS has been out of stock everywhere for at least two months, maybe more) …

I wonder if Meirro could design a 32" 8K along the same lines as their upcoming 6K (link to forum thread) — I’m sure the engineering is different and costs might be a problem, not to mention availability (Are the panels used in the Dell still in production? Who makes the panel in the ASUS?) — 8K seems like a niche where they could have an impact if the parts were available.

Given the lack of options in the 6K and 8K space now, I'm arriving at the conclusion that the finance bros were right. The way to solve this problem isn't single displays, it's stacking your displays horizontally and vertically.

The BOE 8K 120Hz (4K 240Hz dual mode) panel should be available this year 😅

I guess the dream would be an tandem OLED 8K 42-inch monitor ...

I remain hopeful that this is a chicken and egg thing on several levels. 8K is likely to remain a niche for a very long time and for the moment that niche is so tiny that they’ve likely decided to stop selling to the trickle of customers.

One of the reasons for that is that the hardware to power 8K is limited at best. HDMI at its most potent (84Gbps) cannot do a great job with 8 bit (let alone 10 bit) colour depth. DisplayPort (77Gbps) is even worse (and I will always choose DisplayPort over HDMI if the choice allows, for an equivalent task). And we’re not even talking of the processing power required; you’re not going to want base silicon from Apple and the M1 generation is completely out, depending on task and hits you’re willing to take. And I’m not willing to take any. Which means a Thunderbolt 5 connection (M3 Ultra, M4 Pro/Max, M5 Pro/Max).

Perhaps 8K and microLED will mature at the same time. Or perhaps something more interesting than either will appear, but I doubt it’s this decade.

All very true, signal processing and transmission don’t have any headroom at the moment to accommodate 8K. 6K at anything beyond 60Hz is already seeing challenges. No wonder dual cables/inputs are being suggested for the 8K panel.

I didn’t realize the signal transmission was cutting this close until I saw the price of higher bandwidth USB-C/TB5 cables and the thickness of the 96Gbps HDMI (HDMI 2.2) cables. Seems like fiber optics (active cables) are going to be a must have even at 2m length for this type of bandwidth.

That's only a 31.5" panel though right? Come on man some of us need to run more than 2 terminal windows at once side by side 😆
Yes, I have no use for a 32” 8K as the 32” 6K already exceeds my ability to discern pixels at general viewing distance and when working rather than pixel peeping. If only there was a term for that… 🥸

40” 8K is the sweet spot. Although I’m ageing into a love of ultrawides. Combined with a hatred of curved displays and we can comfortably assume that I’ll never own one.

I have no interest in doing so. As mentioned, 6K exceeds my ability to see the pixels and it makes the system work very hard indeed just to display those invisible dots. And costs way more. IF you can tell the difference, and it matters to you, and you can afford the prices, have at it. But I’m not even remotely interested in exceeding somewhere in the neighbourhood of 220 ppi (Retina in Applespeak). And I’m certainly not willing to pay for it.

Now, having the display be tandem OLED… or if Apple backs off its horse (Windows has a magnificent OS-level display tech that Apple used to license and the 42” 4K OLED on my gaming PC is eminently useable, which I cannot say about my 32” 4K on my Mac) and that opens up so many good display options that are firewalled behind Retina…

There are other display problems besides UI space. It would be nice if there were Retina-class screens larger than 32" -- but I find it a bit difficult to feel sorry for people complaining about no Retina ultra-wides when that sector is flooded with good options these days, like the Dell 52" ultra-wide 6K.

Not sure what you mean by "pixel peeping" -- I mean, look at the world around you and the colors in it, then look at your screen. There is a *lot* of room for improvement.

The six-page Tom's Hardware review of the ASUS may have said it best: "An 8K picture is something that needs to be seen to be understood. […] The PA32KCX has many positive attributes that include a phenomenal pixel density of 275 ppi. That means you won’t be able to see the dot structure in any circumstance."

Colors and gradients in imagery and art have qualities that even Liquid Retina (264+ ppi) will struggle with, not to mention standard Retina (218+ ppi). You can't see the dot structure, but you can see its effect.

As best I can find right now (I may have missed something), Apple has six current classes of Retina:

Retina (LCD)
Liquid Retina (LCD)
Retina XDR (LCD + mini-LED)
Liquid Retina XDR (LCD + mini-LED)
Super Retina XDR (OLED)
Ultra Retina XDR (Tandem OLED)

In other words, no.

I'm not quite sure why you think this is relevant in a thread about 8K UHD monitors. 8K UHD 60Hz has been supported since M2+ Pro/Max/Ultra and M4+. Pro Display XDR runs on 2019 Thunderbolt 3 Apple hardware, not to mention all M1+.
