When we moved into our current house there was a peacock that lived here. He'd follow you everywhere and as soon as you turned your back on him he'd jump up and attack you. The bastard cut my arm with one of the thorn things on the back of his legs, left a scar for months. Also tried to attack my dad once, but as soon as he jumped up my dad punched him in the face and knocked him out for a minute. He eventually disappeared and we got a new one who's cool and lets me pet him and stuff.

But yeah, I got attacked by a peacock. Not sure if that counts.

I have a friend in Australia whose cat died after being bitten by one of these:

Funnel-web spider.

The scary thing is, apparently, a house centipede.

WTF, so that thing's domesticated?

Anyway, I always hated seeing those things. They're fairly common in Australia. One time, I was eating breakfast with friends, and while we were eating cereal, something dropped into one of their bowls and made a splash. At first, we were all a bit too hung over to react quickly, but once we saw that thing try to crawl out, we all jumped out of our seats!!

Ok ok.....I jumped out of MY seat. I don't know what everyone else did. I'm a big *****.

Funnel Web or centipede?

I once helped write a song called It Sucks To be Australian, the basic premise of which is that you guys have more deadly critters in one place than any other patch of land in the world :p

Don't let anyone tell you that these are harmless:

Can't find my pictures so I hotlinked another guy's. The one that got me had horns that were bigger and sharper.

When I was living the the eastern Congo, I was attacked by one these while I was taking a bucket shower. Felt a huge THUMP on the side of my head while I was soaping up. Like any normal person, I tried brushing it off, but I guess that's when it decided to latch onto my ear.

To make a long story short, I ended up running around the compound completely naked (except for the soap) with a giant insect hanging off of my ear. A couple of my teammates managed to pry it off but it still left some pretty bloody holes. Oh, and I was so angry at the damn thing, I stepped on it, did NOT hear a crunch. When I got off it, it just crawled away.

This was the same compound where I woke up one morning and saw a snake slither out from underneath my bed. I followed it out, threw a brick at it and the thing reared up and SPIT AT ME. Turns out it was a spitting cobra. We got it cornered and we all put on goggles and eventually got it with a shovel. Rest of the day, everyone walked around wearing and wellingtons.

You could have just let the snake out, poor snake (Doesn't mean much to others, I just really like snakes :p)

That about covers it!

I'm surprised that there are any Ausies alive to post here. Something like 8 of the top 10 most dangerous creatures alive are Australian.

Box Jellyfish
Funnel Web Spider
Saltwater Crocodile
Tiapan (snake)
Brown Snake
Tiger Snake
Great White Shark
Red Back Spider
Blue Ring Octopus

Fun. I'm from Ohio.

I encountered one of these last night but I don't think it got me – I can't remember much about it really, but now I'm really hungry and have a throbbing pain in my chest.

Is this normal or should I be worried?

You should be fine.
Just don't wear all white and sit around a circular table with some work mates..

That bird looks like a piñata :p

:D Never thought about it that way.

One thing is for sure, when they decide to use their beaks to get their way - it's a nasty pinch.

Hey, no fair if Aussie's can play.

 We've got some pretty nasty creatures here. Actually I also got bitten by one of these too - Flying Ant and Bull Ant. The flying ant got me right in the neck, felt pretty sick for a day:

Not sure I can post a picture as I'm at work right now. . . worst bite I had was from a bar star. . . yeah thats right, trying to break up a fight and the bitch BIT ME! That did not end well for her :D It turns out though that 90% of human bites will get infected. I spoke with a doctor who warned me to take ALL my anti-biotics, as he has on more then one occasion seen "tough guys" come in who feel they don't need anti-biotics and then a week later he's discussing amputation with them. . .

Rainbow Lorikeet. They're everywhere and they simply don't shut up. A noisy day in the forest in the US would, to an Aussie, sound so quiet we'd think every bird had disappeared.

Anyhoo, I'm also an Aussie so I've been chomped by a fair few nasties including a White-tailed spider once and the supposedly harmless though scary as hell Huntsman three times. Let me tell you, it hurts a LOT.

My mate has trod on a stonefish and nearly died but he's ok, my Dad got bit by a red-back spider when he was a boy, made him really sick but came through fine. Hasn't been a spider bite death in my living memory. Though if a funnel-web gets you and you're somewhere remote and for some reason you missed the millions of first-aid lessons in school teaching you what to do if one gets you then you'd be very worried.

I was bit by a Fisher's Lovebird when I was around 12, and scratched by a cat when I was 5.

I think that's about it :)
