Okay, so the Sandy Bridge will be faster, cooler and more energy efficient, but what do you guys think about the next step in MBP's design? Is it going to stay pretty much the same (with a few minor tweaks here and there) or will we see a complete (maybe not complete but a meaningful) redesign of the MBP's body with Sandy Bridge?

From my point of view, the introduction of Sandy Bridge would provide the opportunity for a case redesign, as it would reflect the architectural advance of the cpu design. Although I don't believe we'll see a major design shift, e.g. like the introduction of the original Powerbook G4 back in the days ... .

Think probably even sharper edges - like the new iPhone?

Why would Apple introduce sharper edges when people are complaining about how sharp they are already?

Probably wont see sandy bridge until early 2011. And even then you could post "New MBP refresh over summer?"

There could always be an update 6 months away.

lol have you seen the edges on the macbook pros? You cant cut much sharper, they are pretty much 90 degree angles. The new iphone edges may not even be as sharp as the MBPs are right now.

Because they're Apple?

Haha, Apple's about form over substance, aren't they. But here's the thing, there's absolutely nothing in it for them to go any sharper. One, any sharper and they'll start making people bleed; two, sharper edges really wouldn't look any better; three, I don't see how making the edges sharper would make manufacturing the MBP any cheaper.

So to me, it begs the question, WHY would they?

The next gen iPhone is "sharper" than the the iPhone 3GS only because the 3GS is already a smooth pebble as it is. If anything, the next gen iPhone's design brings it in line with the iPad and unibody construction of the MacBook Pros, so it's not like the MacBook Pros have to follow suit and match the next gen iPhone like se/30 is suggesting.

... sorry, didn't get my point clear - the striking thing about the new iPhone's design is the absence of any curvature of the device's back (plain glass front - plain glass back). The curved backside of the iPad is well in line with the current iPhone's design and also resembles the slightly curved lids of the MacBook Pro + Air.

Wasn't it that most doubts regarding the credibility of the first photos of the leaked iPhone raised because of it's Dieter Rams-like design?

So it was just guessing that the new iPhone is marking a take-off from curvatures to more planar design elements in future products.

Apple may not use Sandy Bridge at all. They may use AMD chips as they seem to have launched a new range and a HUGE number of new laptops seem to be using them?
Then we may get ATI graphics cards too.
As for the design, what's wrong with it? It's solid, strong, beautiful. I would expect to see in the next revision the same unibody case, USB 3.
Erm, better battery's, touch screen option? I don't think we will get a 16:10 ratio screen, better SSD drives and the same superdrives. No blue ray. And also OS 10.7. Same Matte or Glossy screen options.

Don't forget that Apple likes to take their own sweet time to upgrade CPUs and (understandably) they are never the first to adopt a new Intel processor architecture. I don't think we'll see more than a slight clock speed bump for the next refresh.

I'm curios to see what the next major architecture upgrade will mean for the 13" model.

What about some kind of partial case redesign? Or IPS displays?
iMac Alu first gen design lasted 2 years.
iPhone 3g/3gs design lasted 2 years.
MBP unibody design will be 2 years old this fall. (if we don't count the switch from removable battery to non-removable battery)

On the other hand, MacMini design is 5 years old and there's no reason to change it, maybe the same could apply to MBPs.

I'd be very happy with one or more of the following:

- IPS panels (and better panel quality control)
- Expresscard and/or ESATA (on the 15")
- USB 3

I'm also awaiting the next refresh of the MBP with eager eyes.

My C2D Asus is about to give up the ghost and I have $2000 waiting for a mid range 15".

Speed bumps imho are the most likely of any improvements, the current i5's are relatively low spec within the i5 line-up.

USB3.0 is not looking likely, on the grounds that it hasn't been included in the recent revision of the iMac's or Mac Pro's.

A speed bump and an ATi gpu would seal the deal for me.

Knowing Apple, they will probably give us an all glass MBP ala iPhone 4 with the wireless radio antennas on the outside of course. LOL...

But in all seriousness if Apple meant business, they would introduce a BLACK Unibody Aluminum MBP...That thing would sell like CRAZY.

Or just revive the blackbook

What do you think will be included in this minor update? Would Sandy Bridge be a minor update or you do not think we will see Sandy Bridge in 2010?

there is no way sandy bridge is coming in 2010. i dont see why they should update the mbp line again this year period. minor or not.

The iMac has it, and the 27" ACD will have it, so odds are that the next major MPB update will be to the 16:9 screen ratio. This would totally change the physical dimensions, and screen resolutions of the MPBs. The 16:9 ratio is becoming the standard for LCD monitor and laptop screens. The next item to watch for 16:9 is the rumored MBA update.

I doubt MBPs will be updated this calendar year. I'd guess February 2011 at the earliest.

I don't see why Apple wouldn't bump up the processors to i7-640M, i5-580M and i5-560M later this year.

They've done simple processor bumps before.

Apparently it's fairly likely because the current processors are prone to overheating and these fall updates are supposed to fix that?

I just want to know if that's likely to be the only change or if a new GPU might be slipped in, the iMacs have such vastly better GPUs now.. I want HD 5XXX too :(
