My home theater does not come close to a movie theater's screen and sound BUT it is "good enough" for us to enjoy it.
Well, that's a preference. Some prefer the comfort of their own place, I prefer to pay a bit of coin to a theater for an experience I can't get at home.

Everyone is different. I just don't think that home theaters are threatening to topple movie theaters. They have affected them, yes, and people's viewing preferences have changed. But there are still enough people out there who wish to experience movies in a theater.

It’s possible to have a huge screen with a projector from 100 to 200 inches and mid-end two or more channel amp/receiver plus Klipsch (horns) for a great theater experience.

What's really the best is paying a bit of coin and then having a bad experience.

That being said when the new Star Wars flick comes out this fall I'm going to reserve seats at a theater with comfy recliners to go see it!

I haven't been to a movie theater in years. I don't like crowds. I don't like waiting in lines. I don't care for missing parts of a film because I need a break. Lots of reasons make me want to enjoy my movies at home.

Back in the day, going to the movies was grand. Not so much anymore, for me.

The NY Times just posted an article about the changing face of cinema yesterday and asking about streaming etc.

I hate streaming. It's my absolute last resort. I'd rather buy physical media and/or official digital.

As far as movies, I go to the theater occasionally but I cannot stand the crowds etc. Or the prices. If movies were still under $10 for an evening show here, I'd consider going more often despite the crowds. There is something about seeing a good movie on the big screen.

I hope more Shaw Brothers will be screened here, I missed every single screening last year due to real life stuff and I had so much fun seeing two Shaws (geez 3 years ago!)

If you have an AMC near you there's the A-List option, about $25/month and you can watch 3 movies a week of your choice, no restrictions (IMAX, 3D, Dolby Digital etc.), and you also get some nice perks (free popcorn etc.). That's about $25 for 12 movies or more ($2/movie or less).

I think the price in US is reasonable, here in Australia it costs around $18 for adult ticket plus another $20 for snacks/food/drinks so you'll be looking around $40-$50 per head. If you got large family its better to stay home and enjoy M.A.S.H.

Thank you. :)

The AMCs around here are dreadful and there isn't enough new movies to go more than a couple of times a year. If the repertory houses had a plan like that and showed stuff I want to see 3-4x a year, I'd definitely consider that kind of plan.

For me, it's best to buy older films and rent new, especially with prices, rude movie-goers, and such.

another $20 for snacks/food/drinks

Invest in appropriate clothing, you'll save thousands.

LOL :) you'll be shocked how much pop corn and other snacks cost here at the movies.

I usually bring in a small snack and a soda or some sparkling water. I don't even hide it; as long as it's not outrageous (and I have seen people trying to get in with a full McDonald's meal), they don't really care.
It's easy to spend $50 for some popcorn and a drink.

After slow and painful death of Blockbuster video stores i think Cinema theaters are heading on the same direction due to recent digital and technological revolution, home entertainment theater and current lifestyle. What do you think?

The last movie i watched at the movies was for Michael Douglass many many years ago and that was it , i don't know i am feeling the attraction and excitement is just not there anymore.

If you stopped or slowed going to the movies what was your reason?

The theatres here in Southern California changed a lot over the last few years. I stopped going to the movies 10 years ago because of loud people, horrible seating, high cost. Now, they have 1/10th the seating, MASSIVE seats, massive walkways, to seat delivery of food, and staff that monitor people who disrupt and actively kick them out of they do (and means for moviegoers to report people who do this).

I've actually started going to a few movies over the last year because of this.

Last 10 years I've enjoyed renting movies on Apple TV and Amazon Prime. Especially once I got married - going to the theatres was just insane cost wise. Popcorn and drinks and a few other items were easily $30+. Apple TV I could buy for $19.99 or rent for $6.99 (or less) - and get a pizza and save.

Biggest reason for me ending my theatre movie going 10+ years ago? Cost secondarily, people mainly. The noise, using cellphones, taking calls, kicking the back of my chair, ... I'm usually not one to get easily pissed off but had some pretty bad experiences.

Good idea, i will try to smuggle some choc bars and soft drinks then if i went to the theater again. But to be honest the smell of the pop corn is irresistible o_O:D

They probably needs security guards to police and monitor the place specially on weekends. I would be really pissed if some idiot kicked the back of my seat.

The new theatres they just built off of the 210 in Rialto, CA (Renaissance pkwy) --- they're talking about having a permanent police presence because of how often the cops are called to deal with people. Terrible. lol. Waiting for friends to meet me at the movies last year, saw 3-4 cops walk into a theatre to remove someone. Every time I go there's a cop car outside.

That said, I really like what they did. The reclining seats that are VERY comfortable (with heat) and walk-ways that allow 2-3 people to walk side by side. They must be doing well because it is growing.

I smuggle in a bag of small candies for the kids, when there are kids. My wife demands a soda, popcorn, and a candy bar. If it is just me, there is no consumption. :)

It could be digital now, like digital IMAX which uses two projectors.

True but would it equal Cineramas three projectors?, for instance the Cinerama company tried to use three 65mm film projectors at the screen at once but it was too expensive.

You would think that lowering the number of seats in those Socal theaters would have dramatically increased the ticket price but it didn't really, at least not at the one we like. I also like that with the massive seats they also have larger aisles so I'm not stepping on anyone if I need to take a break in the middle of the flick.

It's not about the size of the screen alone, but also how much the screen fills your field of vision that affects the experience. With these multiplex theaters, they are just boxes with a slanted floor and a screen on one end of them. This is not a theater. There's a difference. Anyone who has attended both classic theaters and current multiplex theaters can see and experience the difference.

There are very few good seating locations in modern theaters. In contrast, at home, with proper planning, the main seating area is always in a "good spot". It doesn't take a lot of money to create a very enjoyable home theater experience. But it DOES require that people think a little bit and not follow the crowd. No matter what my budget was at the time, I was able to create an enjoyable AV home theater that was more effective than if I spent 10x as much.

Of all my friends, family, and acquaintances, none of them have good setups, and they all spent way too much for sound systems are that way out of proportion. But that's what sells, so that's what they buy.

It's nice to hear that you have good experiences and that places like that exist. View attachment 844088 Obviously your experience is not shared by everyone. If the rest of us had experiences like yours, we would feel differently about going to the theater.

Its not the ultra-wide type screens anymore like super CinemaScope.

But then it would not be just the cost of the projectors, but also shooting and printing 65mm film.

Eventually digital projectors will reach 8K and beyond abd become cheaper.

True and someday no film projectors at all just a front projector and streaming from a source or a hard drive and satellite.

I stopped because all my watching can be done at home. Last movie i saw was Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring .when it came out in 2001... DVD's may die slowly, but i don't reckon cinemas will see the same fate, as people wanna watch movies ASAP... unless you start seeing ALL movies come to iTunes as "rentable" on the same day, (which i cannot see happening), then movie theaters are the only 'legal' choice.

In fact, its the same excuse i use when people say "DVD stores are closing" Copyright holders don't want streamers to rent on the same day, because i guess they'd rather want people to pay to go to the theaters and watch instead... In addition, also scared out of their witts about defeating DRM.

Unless movie studios change their way of thinking, then probably not... Its still why you see most screeners (if not all) still physically shipped on DVD

https://variety.com/2017/artisans/production/dvd-screeners-switch-1202603605/

If copyright hasn't relaxed in 30+ years, what change do switching to hard drives have on this front?

Anything could happen, but you don't spend your whole life thinking nothing is gonna work, wake up one day, and have a brainstorm at 80 years old. But that's the feeling of copyright holders.

Digital cinema is already distributed by satellite, internet, and hard drive.

Streaming only makes sense for live events.
