Samsung today shared another ad in its anti-Apple "On the Fence" series that encourages iPhone users to switch over to Samsung devices.

In the spot, a man sits on a literal fence while a woman using a Galaxy Z Flip 4 starts a conversation. "I used to be you," she says. "Sitting on the fence between Apple and Samsung." The man laments on how he wants to switch to a Samsung device, but he's worried about what his iPhone-using friends will think. She goes on to explain that he should be, because his friends will be jealous.

"When you pull out your new Galaxy Z Flip 4, people are going to lose it," she says. "They'll never leave you alone." After that, she hands him one of the Z Flip 4 smartphones, and people immediately start popping up around him commenting on how cool the Samsung phone is. "I could get used to this," he says, jumping off of the fence to the Samsung side.

Unlike Apple, Samsung has a habit of naming and shaming Apple devices in its ads. Just this morning, a World Cup-themed ad from Samsung mocked Apple for not offering a foldable smartphone option.

Samsung in November launched the first ad in the On the Fence series, and many of its recent ad spots have been making fun of Apple for its lack of a foldable iPhone. There continues to be no word on when Apple might debut a foldable device, but reliability, durability, and cost could be holding the Cupertino company back.

When the foldable phone is under 8 mm thick in its folded state, and when the seam is truly invisible and the entire display is as durable as that of my pristine iPhone XS, I’ll consider one. Until then … why are you wasting my time … !?

Samsung should make ads trashing iPhones for being too desirable to thieves.

In the ad they can play real-life clips of people's iPhones being snatched right out of their hands and of groups of thugs pulling iPhones out of the tables at Apple stores. These clips are readily available and have been seen by many people.

Then they can relate stories of people leaving their Galaxy phones behind on outdoor cafe tables and phones dropped on the sidewalk, and the phones would still be there when the owners came back for them. I have come across several anecdotes about this, some from people I know.

And there was one instance I saw in the news where a thief picked a phone from someone only to walk back and handed it back to him after realizing that it was a Galaxy.

"Thieves don't want our phones. Galaxy. Rest Easy."

I still haven't seen a folding phone in the wild. I only see nerdy tech YouTubers with them like Linus Tech Tips. While I love Linus, at around $2000 with limited water resistance and durability issues, camera quality, and how some of the apps glitch moving into "tablet" mode, it's definitely not ready for everyone. And I think that's clear when you look at the adoption.

Apple will enter the market when the hardware is more mature and they can crack the software/hardware fusion. That's what they specialize in. It won't be cheap but Apple will make it look beautiful and it will once again be considered a status symbol. I might buy one if it can be used like an iPad mini when open, but not if there is a lot of sacrifice to features or camera quality, and I'll definitely move away from yearly upgrades since it will be expensive.

Let’s be honest - hardly anyone is switching from iOS to Android. My brother did for a year but went right back.

IMO only appeal of Android is side-loading. I think, if you have a proper computer, it’s easier to live in a “walled garden” on your phone (though walls are still lame). Since I can use my Mac for things like torrent downloads, it doesn’t bother me as much that I can’t do it on my phone.

Lol...I'd make fun of it but I've done that to multiple Flip/Fold users. The phones are pretty cool in an admittedly un-Apple way and it's fun to complement people (or their possessions). It's good for there to be competition and diversity in the market and always interesting to see where technology is going. In the meantime, though, I'm still absolutely smitten with my 13 mini—so powerful, light, and compact especially compared to these folding bricks—and I don't plan to ever cross back over the fence (I started over there, at least with phones).

I have seen them irl but fail to understand exactly what makes foldable smartphones superior and why Samsung is betting so much on them.

Taking long-term usage and the crease out of the equation, it is a cool gimmick that you can fold a display in half without breaking it.

But beyond that? I'm genuinely curious how it improves the general smartphone experience?

Because you can have both a phablet-sized smartphone and a small flip-phone in one product?

Got the Z Fold 3 at launch and really can't see myself going back to a slab phone. I love the compact size of the Flip but I use the S Pen quite often.

I admit the Fold is not for everyone as it is more of a power user device. But the Flip 3 seems to make sense for the basic smart phone user who values size and price isn't a big deal.

If you're a avg. user and want a reliable long term phone... stick to your basic iPhones. It does all you need.

They are trying to make the folding phones more popular. At the moment even on Android they aren't.

Ads makes zero sense because most iPhone owners are not on the fence. So Samsung wants us to switch so that you now need to unfold phone every time you want to use it? No thanks!!

Not only cringe, but the takeaway for me is that people will care solely because it's a modern flippable phone with a foldable screen?

I mean, sure -- when I had the Fold 3 for three weeks I got a lot of comments and my friends found it fascinating. But not one person wanted one. (I'll admit, having a foldable phone was pretty cool, and I liked having two size options available in one form factor. But, the tech is too new and the quality is not there yet. As well, it's just way too thick and bulky and heavy).

My iPhone 13 mini gets more comments because it is so damn small compared to modern phones that people want to hold it to see, and a few have said it's the perfect size and that they'd want one.

Maybe it's different for people who keep their phone in a purse/bag, but my phone is always in my pocket (pants, jacket, or shirt depending on what I'm wearing/doing) and there is no way the Flip would take up less room than my mini or even a regular 14 size. While the surface area is bigger, the chunkiness of the Flip would negate any positives of saving space. It would be a thick square brick in my pockets, just like the Fold was!

Is that what Samsung wants?
