I never compared the S5 to any flagship. All i compared its specs to was the rumours and expectations that many had developed over the past few weeks leading up to the launch. Is this seriously so hard to grasp?

LG announced a QHD display if I am not mistaken. HTC M8 is rumoured to have a 1080P HD LCD Display @ 5inches, we are not sure since it was not launched at MWC. At least I along with many others expected samsung to go one ahead of these given their display expertise and the fact that they had so publicly shown prototypes of ridiculously high ppi AMOLED's. Its ok if Samsung wished to be at par with its android flagship brothers..but given its massive display know how it really needed to leap frog them to come out with the next big thing as this was touted.

Regarding 2gb of RAM being better then 3gb :

Lets wait and use it at least to come to that conclusion! Or are you just so confident without even using the phone that you are willing to come to this conclusion? What effect does the much bloated TW has on the entire experience remains to be seen, definitely compared to other flagship devices which do not have as bloated a SKIN as TW and offer or will offer 3gb of ram along with the same processor.

On specs aren't everything:

This just makes the day! Samsung has always touted its superior specs..Dig around on google, they even used it in marketing.

Apple using 1 GB RAM:

This was totally the opposite of what most Samsung fans claimed...Apple had POOR specs compared to samsung..Whats happening here :)

Android never was the problem...It has always been the TW that has kept on becoming more bloated.

Lol so now Samsung are to blame for the lag that was present in all the earlier android devices.

Android and Apple are two different setups.

Android devices need a certain amount of processing power and RAM to give a decent performance. However the top end android devices have exceeded this point now. I don't see any point in adding ram and specs for the sake of it. The S4 has 2GB of RAM and isn't laggy. So I don't see why 3GB is needed.

Apple devices don't need as much processing power or RAM to perform efficiently. Which is why a dual core processor and 1 GB of RAM is perfectly fine.

Things I do think matter is the lack of a HD screen and the option to have a larger screen.

It all depends on how you take all the rumours. However for the last few weeks it became apparent to me that the S5 was not going to have a significantly faster processor than the current Snapdragon 800 as the next generation chipset isn't ready. When LG announced the Pro 2 with a 1080 p display and the HTC one 2 became rumoured to have a 1080p display, it then became apparent to me that the S5 would also have a 1080p display.

Samsung have never really outdone their competitors in terms of specs. They have more 'Gimmicks' but specs wise they have always been on par with their android 'brothers'.

As for the design. I'll give you that. I personally didn't know what to expect, but maybe some people thought there would be a metal design and are now disappointed.

Touchwiz, I won't because this is a samsung phone, not a nexus one. I don't see why it should be a stock google phone.

I know that there have been higher resolution displays on other phones. However I was referring to the mainstream flaghsips?

What Samsung have given us in the S5 is on the same level as the the other major flaghsips that have already been anounced this year (Sony and LG) and in line with the rumours of the HTC One 2.

It's the job of the tech sites to make outlandish rumours to get us all interested.

However at the end of the day 1080p is more than fine and in line with what the others are doing.

The S5 doesn't need 3GB of ram. The 2 GB in the S4 was fine. I don't see the point in doing something just because you can. Specs aren't everything. Which is why Apple are doing just fine with 1GB in the iphone 5S. Android can't just keep adding features for the sake of it. I'm glad that things have started to slow down. Look at kit kat. Instead of adding a million and one new features, google decided to concentrate on getting it's house in order. Which is the right move imo.

I agree. I like the 5S. Of course, I'm keeping my Note 3, but this is a nice phone regardless if many of you disagree.

I agree that you shouldn't add specs just for the sake of it. However, Touchwiz is a major spec hog. I have owned an S4 since May and my experience is that there is a considerable amount of lag and overall buggy. I have used this S4, HTC, Nexus, and iOS devices. Touchwiz has the most lag by far. (at least in my experience)

It appears to be no better than the Note 3. Hell, I even think the S4 is a more attractive looking device.

If I'm getting a new phone this year, the Z2 won my heart.

Even though I like the S5, Samsung should time their announcements closer to their release dates. Waiting until April 11? Is a bit too long.

The Note 3 rocks!;)

I see very little reason not to ship off my Galaxy Note 3 to one of my co-workers and get the S5 for myself. For me the Note 3 is simply too big (i have to carry a T-Mobile samsung device on me) and i dont care much for the stylus..I just dont want to pick this baby up in april and then have the PRIME version released 2-3 months later as the next big thing !

Lol too bad this release is coming right at the dawn of a new era.

Yunno. in a way. I kind of pity this phone :p

It seems that the Note 3 is not for you. I know that Samsung has several iterations of their phones, but did they really have a mainstream GS4 variant that was better later (available here)?

Any news on non-US availability?

Android Central would be a better place to get that info.

Not sure..I would love the google play edition but dont want to wait for it since i really dont want to keep the note 3 for that long..(i travel quite a bit and while international i have to use my samsung for work)...If the HTC M8 ships with wifi calling (on t-mobile) then thats what i am getting, otherwise it'll be the GS5.

No wifi calling on the google edition, would be very unlikely
Not even hacky solutions exist afaik

Thats a bummer..I really wanted the Nexus 5 and wished it had wifi calling..Its pretty much between LG and Samsung, and i thought i'd learn to like the Note3..Its really not a device for me since i do not use the stylus and really need a smaller screen (around 5 is perfect for me)..

Yea, sounds like g2 , s5, one 2014, maybe sony

An early dig from HTC..

I'm not getting one either. Happy with my note 3 too. :)

See for me…the Note 3 was just a little too big. If the S5 has pretty much the same specs except smaller. I might have to get one…...

My dilemma as well…..if they are coming out with a upgrade build model this summer then I will wait for that one. But I am not going to get the S5 and have buyers remorse 3 months later when the better S5 is released.

I'm thinking I'm very satisfied with my Note 3 for the rest of the year unless HTC wows me with something. To be honest, I thought the Z2 from Sony was the show-stealer at MWC today, not the S5. If I didn't love the Note 3 so much, the Z2 is something I'd seriously consider. Pretty underwhelmed by the S5, not so much that the specs aren't good, just don't like much of anything they did with the design. It is also personal preference obviously.

It doesn't look bad. Not sure why Samsung loves chrome trim so much it's almost on all of their devices.

Solid upgrade from the S3 in some ways which is what I think this phone was intended for anyway. That and new users. But if you already have a 2013 flagship phone you're going to be underwhelmed as we all are. It's not a bad phone but it's just not revolutionary. As I have a feeling most early 2014 phones are going to be. I am doubtful the next HTC flagship will bring anything compelling to existing 2013 flagship holders and instead will be more towards this with a 2012 device or older looking to upgrade. And again new users.

The most exciting and compelling phone I've seen so far this year is the Xperia Z2.

Class of 2013 was the best phone generation of this decade especially for Android users.

HTC One
Motorola Moto X / G
LG G2
Google Nexus 5
Sony Xperia Z / ZR / Z1
Samsung Galaxy S4
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Huawei Ascend P6
Huawei Ascend Mate
Asus Fonepad
Lenovo K900 / P780
Xiaomi Mi3
Meizu MX3
Oppo Find 5

Those were just Androids. I didn't include iPhone 5s, BlackBerry Z10, or several Nokia Lumia phones.

After seeing the S5, it didnt really wow me. I didn't expect much in the first place. I don't think any of them will this year. I think Samsung's true flagship comes from the Note series. In a way, the Note 3 is still better than the S5. And resell value on the Notes are the best for Samsung phones. By this summer, you will likely get the S5 for $99 or less with contract. This will sell 50M minimum and be very common. But the Note 3, I rarely will ever see a discount for them even months after they were released.

The best and most interesting phone in my opinion that was announced from MWC was NOT the Z2 or S5. It was the YotaPhone.

If it's anything like the GS4 Active, it's not an issue. I'm not going swimming with it. Just want to be able to use it while it's raining/snowing, etc outside.

That's a gorgeous color.

Also.

According to the video in this link (can't embed), the flash on the back doubles as a heart rate monitor. Very interesting.

There are tons of apps that use the flash as a heart rate monitor in the App Store. I have two of them on my iPhone and they work very well. Both use the flash on the back of the iPhone. I have not looked in the play store, but I would imagine that there are apps that do the same.
