Picked one up last night. Basically all I did for the duration yesterday was setting it up. Today I tried it out and so far so good.

The reasons to get it over the M8? Well the return policy helps a lot and I know I'd get that on the M8 as well but I already had the M7 and decided to sell it. I already have a HTC Rezound which was pretty damn good back in the day sans its heft and I have been using it more lately.

Trying back and forth with the S5 and M8 while shopping it, TW wasn't really terrible but I could load Nova if it comes down to it. The screen I prefer more and don't feel I need to tone back the color really and the wasted space on the M8 irks me. There is always the better camera just in cause which is nice. I didn't feel and still don't think right now anyways I really need to go into developer options adjusting animation or turning on ART. The audio quality I'll more use earbuds a high percentage of the time anyways and not at a real high volume. Wireless charging would be nice and I have messed with the Samsung Gear Neo a bit and read reviews and if I keep the S5 I am leaning towards picking it up as well. The dot view cover for the M8 I really do not think I'd leave it on while using the device to tell the truth as it was awkward and cumbersome with it on in trying at retailers. And i prefer the feel of the S5 versus the M8 when going naked on both.

More later. Time will tell but at least I have no regrets yet! :)

I set up the fingerprint security and alternate password but only after the S5 is shutdown completely and restarted am I prompted. Just turning off the S5 for sleep, anyone could turn it on and use it.

Help please. :)

settings, lock screen, secured lock time, check off instantly with the power key or when the screen times out.

Thanks. I figured it was a setting but the Samsung guys at BB could not figure where to go either.

Biggest hurdle with the fingerprint security is swiping correctly. Once I do that, no problem.

Samsung did more than HTC for me to want to try the S5. The aforementioned scanner, water resistance, heart rate monitor, better camera are features just off the top of my head.

I've just got an S5 at the end of last week (I wasn't planning on getting one but I discovered a crack in the Bezel of my Note 3 and my desire to get a new device then kicked in!) and am actually very surprised by how well the fingerprint scanner works.

I'd read all sorts of posts saying how bad the scanner is and was expecting it to be junk but it works pretty much 100% of the time for me. Sure, it's not as simple as just pressing the home button, but it's not the disaster I was expecting it to be either

It always work with me when I use both hands (index finger from second hand). I am still struggling to make it work with one handed operation. There is also misconception of registering 3 finger prints only. One can actually register 24 different finger prints.

Great battery life on this phone, seems to be getting better, 1 and 2/3 days and still got 44% left :)

I have a Black S5 on my desk right now, and i don't know what all the hate is with this phone in regards to design, I think it looks good & much better looking than the S4.

I also think the back cover is good aswell, it's not a fingerprint magnet and grip is great due to the rubber texture, plus it feels alot better built than the S4 did.

I'm actually half tempted to go buy one now while i've had a proper look at it.

Hmmmmmmm :p

You can sideload google's stock email app that basically resembles gmail, or try mailbox ....

Personally I think Samsung's own isn't bad at all. It does the job well.

My problem is i have sync setting to manual but they come in automatically, only when mail is closed on my macbook. Any ideas?

What do you want them to do ?

If you want them to come in automatically then set it to fetch every 15 or push.

If it's manual, then are they coming in when you launch the app and it's refreshing.

What email is it? .me ?

Some videos on youtube with people switching back cover (white phone with black back cover and black phone with white back cover). They are very nice. Front is same for all colors except for white. One can customize phone into every other color.

Nice bike!
Hi jamez,
Looks like you also have M8. How does S5 compares with M8 in terms of OS speed. I played around M8 and S5 in att store. M8 is blazing fast. It is like android on steroids. So much junk opened up and there are 18 instances/tabs of Chrome, it just went on like as if nothing is there.
S5 is fine. But definitely slow compared to M8. Surprisingly, S5 in att store peformed like my S5. I am really not sure if all this tinkering is making any difference to S5 OS speed.

I agree.....the skin that HTC uses Sense 6 is allot faster than the one Samsung uses Touch Wiz. TW tends to be a resource hog.....Sense is more optimized. I have both phones and the M8 has become my daily driver. Just that the camera on the S5 is sooo much better than the camera on the M8......

The S5 no matter what you disable & tinker with, I found doesn't really free up much extra ram / resources.

It's certainly not a slow phone but yeah it just isn't as snappy as the M8.

Samsung just has sooooo much running underneath its skin (that you can't disable as they are services) that no matter if you disable a handful of apps, top resources are still being used up needlessly.

I'm not sure if this just remnants of legacy software piling up over the years or what, but it's the one area above all else where Samsung should focus.

It's software experience impacts every user of the phone (unlike adding fingerprint scanners or heart rate monitors).

The reason Sense is so optimised is that prior to the a HTC One M7, HTC scrapped all of its previous sense OS skin and rebuilt Sense 5 from scratch. Then it optimised it all further with Sense 5.5. Now with Sense 6 it's refined it, and added features without adding bloat. There are no legacy services running underneath.

Even with 9 apps open (and all cached services/apps) you'd be hard pushed to get the M8 ram usage up over 1gb whereas the S5 will hover 1.4-1.5 with nothing opened, just background services running. Disabling an app that isn't running like s-voice isn't therefore going to reduce that stationary ram usage.

Yep. Imagine a world where our M8's had a 16mp Camera :). Droooool.

M8 may be a bit faster but for me that doesn't make up for being only 4.5" screen size most of the time, terrible notification light, taller/heavier, volume buttons and screen to touchy, no wireless charging, camera not as good, and can't use without a case too slippery.
Where i live S5 has better reception too.

I had both too like others here but sold the M8 and kept S5 till iPhone 6 if 5.5"? or note 4 arrives, i will be going up in screen size.

So the nexus 5 only has a 4.5" screen then too ? I suppose the LG G3 only has a 5" display... ;) drama ...

I just got a ruler. Excluding the space used for on screen buttons. Size viewable without buttons would be 4.7" exactly.

However this once again ignores the fact that full screen apps hide the buttons in the first instance.

Of all your criticisms of the M8 Robster, this one just doesn't really hold much weight IMHO and as I say you could make same argument against any device that has on screen buttons.

Take something like the One Plus One with its 5.5" screen. With on screen buttons actual viewable on-screen content is exactly same as the M8 despite it having a bigger screen.
