I downloaded the latest full XSA (took me five hours on satellite).

You can now move dock icons and there is a camera shortcut on the lock screen.

There is no auto-rotate option in the gallery and you cannot disable the shutter sound (even when phone is on silent).

The modem files have also been updated and it appears the fingerprint scanner and the camera software are also updated.

You can connect your S5 to your Mac and use Samsung Kies to grab the download if you don't want to wait for the OTA.

Thanks, but i won't put Kies on my mac. Will just wait. iPhone 6 will probably be here first ;)

Possibly. There are a few factors that will go into that decision.

The S5 is a pretty compelling purchase. iPhone 6 will have to be equally compelling at worst.

The 5S did not really last very long for me. Maybe the increased screen size on the ip6 will make a big difference for awhile but somehow I think I should really steer clear regardless.

My ipad? Cannot go long during the day without wanting to use it again.

I am using the Taiwanese firmware and have all of the above (including the latest updates).

I wrote a step-by-step guide on XDA about 'upgrading' to the Taiwanese firmware.

I've found the phone to be more responsive with the most recent update, and the camera is definitely quicker.:)

I have the latest UK firmware that I installed using Kies and will confirm all the above.

I dislike Kies on my Mac though.

The no removeable battery is a big thing for me so one of the reasons I won't go back to the iphone as great of a device I expect it to be. I will miss the little things Samsung have to be honest.

something as small as the back button is huge to me

Hopefully with a bigger device battery capacity can be ramped up so that won't be a concern. (Hopefully)

Maybe but I would still need to have the option. Too many times when my battery is low in certain places having a spare has saved me quite a few times. You know you don’t need to charge it every night with a removeable when you go out and you are without a cable for example. It’s something that is nice to have even on a phone like mine where the battery generally does last all day. I would expect though a 5’5 iphone the battery will be quite beastly.

Back button seemed a lot nicer prior to iOS 7 and Apple intro'ing gesture based navigation where a simple swipe to the right or left moved you through content.

There was a lot of tap based UI before and it was not consistent between apps.

iOS changed that, and not the back button is a lot less alluring, but is handy when it takes back to the app from which certain actions began. I do like it for that, but it's still clunky at times compared to gesture based navigation.

Samsung gave the Australian version of the S5 some great features:

Can't rotate photos in gallery
Can't change dock icons
Can't put camera on lock screen
Can't turn camera shutter sound off.

Idiots

and forgot no UPDATES :D
I wonder what's the rationale behind this, especially the first three points.

The last one could possibly be mandatory due to some law?

Anyone else's S5 turning into a lag fest? Especially in messages or is this how Samsung phones work, fly when you get them then slowly turn into a lagathon? Getting sick of killing apps in advanced task manager and active apps. With everything killed it sits on 1.18gb, soon as you open a few apps its up to 1.5-1.8.
Is it normal to take 5 seconds from portrait to landscape in messages?

Is this what everyone goes on about with Touchwiz.

lol that's not my experience with touchwiz but I guess when a restart will help, after that check what apps/services launch in startup and check again if you get the same issue to see what is running.

I am not laughing, tried a restart still the same. Guess its the dreaded lag that i keep reading about.

Hell no, that's not normal mate it's not instant like ios but 5 seconds or even 2 seconds it's too much.

I don't like to suggest this but when all fails.... Factory reset ?

Ok, man its taken ages to set this thing up i don't even know if i remember everything i did if i factory reset it:(

Somethings happened i havn't done anything besides using it normally.

So close to pulling the trigger on a cheap 5C to keep me going to iPhone 6. Just saw a brand new one for $165 off lol.

YES! YES! YES! That's what I was saying all along.

Not so much the lag thing - but memory management wise big ol YES.

The S4 and S5 both turned me into a memory management obsessive whore. Having to check usage, and close apps. You should not have to worry about that and thats why I lambast them for not going with 3GB.

It why for me the choice of poor camera on the M8 was less of a sacrifice / cross to bear as it was only part of the phone that used now and again - rather than the obsessiveness and irritation Touchwiz memory management caused me which effect you ALL OF THE TIME. To me a poor camera was a better trade off than giving me OCD and Irritation every time I used the device. In a daily driver I choose performance and not having to think about managing my phone, over a better camera all day long.

That being said - my Note Pro 12.2 is even more of a whore memory wise sitting around 2-2.1GB just as it is ....

Seriously Samsung sort your memory management out - it sucks.

The Note 4 should at least have 3GB though. The Note 3 was the only samsung device that didn't cause me memory management concerns.

Well i can handle the memory usage but the lag is the problem, its seemed to have slowed in everything, even in maps it takes 5 seconds to rotate.

Yeah yeah you said it, but i am not going back to a M8 lol. Too much stuffing around to get these android phones right.
Don't think i would buy another Samsung.

LOl. :) Yeah I know you won't but hopefully whatever comes next won't have the issue.

The lag thing is curious though. When you factory reset did you manually go into recovery and wipe cache which can sometimes help.

Also are you running Dalvik or ART ?

If it's ART try changing back to Dalvik in case something installed is not compatible and causing you issues, likewise before you reset if you are on Dalvik, try turning on ART and see if the forced recompiling solves the lag issue.

No just did a restart not factory reset, if i do that i will never get it back to how i had it:rolleyes:It was running Dalvik, i will swap to ART and re start see what happens. Thanks.

edit, nope didn't work. Guess factory reset is only option :(

Or try doing an emergency restore in Kies. Basically let it load the software & flash from scratch .... If your going to reset anyway.

I am not letting Kies near my macbook:) May as well put the Taiwanese version on it if doing that and get all the things missing. Think i would rather throw it off a cliff :p

Yeah Kies on mac is terrible and lets not forget what it did to my Note 3 (tripping Knox doing a reset through it) but often its the only way to get official firmware without having to go down ODIN route.
