The Hackintosh Thread

It will be curious to see how many more versions of macOS are intel based. If they really plan to transition the lineup in two years, its possible that BS is "Leopard" of the this gen and its the last Intel OS. I'll still use my Hacks and IntelBooks for along time to come anyways.

Unless they complete the transition by WWDC next year which would be a one year transition I expect 11.1 will also support Intel as they will still be selling Intel Macs. Given the yearly cadence I think it would be very bad from a public relations point of view to sell Intel Macs this year and next year and not support them until at least 2024. Even a pessimistic lifespan of a Mac has to be at least 3 years?

Anyone else got the feeling the new macOS name „Big Sur“ a.k.a „BS“ is kinda hilarious? Pun intended one may ask?
 
Maybe the next generation of Hackintosh platforms will be Raspberry Pi or something ARM-based like that. Or jailbroken iPads.

I’d like to see somebody get it working on an Acorn Archimedes.
 
I'm pretty much set on getting a hackintosh towards the end of the transition period as an upgrade to my current Trashcan MP. Something based on components as compatible as possible (probably just straight up one of the tonymac 'golden builds'). The plan is to use that to get the most out of the OSX software licenses I have acquired over the decade.

Here's to hoping that there will still be some decent picks for upcoming AMD GPU's that perform well. Not liking what I hear about the 1st gen Navi in OSX, nor do I want funny firmware issues like fans full blast in sleep mode. And RX 580 would be a tad underwhelming to say the least. 🙂

I don't think I'll make the jump to ARM unless somehow it's way beyond Intel/AMD/Nvidia. The whole soldered-on, locked-down, gatekeeper-required-direction of the platform has been bugging me for a good few years now.

We accept it for phones. We traditionally have not for PCs. I think that Apple want to further move in this direction. The effect that it will have on me is to move what I can off of macOS unless there's an attractive Apple solution. At-the-moment, the most attractive solution is the Mac Pro. Except for the price.

I've read that there are still issues with AMD processors and that Intel CPUs are simpler. If, at some point, I get a working Hackintosh (I have High Sierra running but I wouldn't really call it running), then I'll be able to make better decisions. It is a tough environment to get and keep working from what I hear.

Yeah, exactly same boat here.

The new MP seems to have quite a few issues right now if you believe the posts over in the MP forum, moreso if you rely on thirdparty cards. Apart from that, not having a custom security chip interferring with the system sounds ... nice. 🙂 For me in particular I do not like that it's rated at 100W minimum power draw in idle, nor that it's such a big boy. Just looking for a versatile desktop, not a server grade machine.

I haven't looked closely as I'm not that close to buying one. I wasn't aware of the 100 Watt draw at idle.

I would like to do a 10th gen Intel build with a motherboard with triple or quad channel RAM in a full tower. I'm not a gamer which gives me a lot of flexibility with run-of-the-mill graphics options. The Studio XPS 8930 is actually ideal for me. I could order it with a high-end CPU with UHD630 and that's all I would need. I could add components our of my parts bin and upgrade it over time.

I would do this right now if it weren't for how they designed the case - it's optimized for space and for getting at components as opposed to cooling. I want a cool system so that the components last. I am not up for doing a build - I've done a few and they are a lot of work. Other household members like them too.
 
Does anyone have a good guide to getting a fully functioning VM of x86/x86-64 macOS running on the Windows versions of VMware Workstation/Player and/or the Windows version of Parallels? I did it once back in the day with Mac OS X Lion on a Dell XPS tower that had a 1st Generation Quad-Core Intel Core i7 running Windows 7 and the then-current release of VMware Player and it worked for only a little bit before kernel panicking epically.

I have more spare PCs than Macs at the moment, and I think a VM might be the perfect place to try out macOS Big Sur. Apologies if this is not a good thread for this.

I got it working on VirtualBox without too much trouble but performance was miserable. VMWare performance is said to be better but the directions out there on VirtualBox but I haven't seen any on VMWare that work.

Do you have a guide for that handy? I tried it with VirtualBox on an actual Mac (as the host system) not too long ago and I couldn't even get the thing to see the Mojave installer, let alone boot off of it. I know that at least doing this on Parallels or VMware Fusion is not only legal, but easily doable.

I hope that this link goes through. Maybe it isn't as easy as I think. I've been using VirtualBox for ten years installing Linux and Windows many dozens of times and it may just seem easy to me because I've done it so many times. The thing about VBox is that there are some simple command lines that you can execute to allow it to install macOS. My understanding is that it is harder (or maybe not possible) to get it to work in VMWare. I think that Apple may not care that much about VirtualBox as it's basically freeware and not really maintained that well while VMWare is a paid product.

Sharing an cMP to Hackintosh - Mid 2020 update
Long time Mac Pro user. Starting with the 1,1 and ending with the 5,1.
Jumped from a Dual x5680 with 96GB ram to a 3900x / Hackintosh / Windows box in Feb 2020.
Performance and compatibility with Catalina is 100% stable - and a great upgrade to the 5,1.

Jumping to 128GB
Since the price of RAM is dropping - I added an additional RGB DDR4 3200 64GB for $235. While 128GB isn't necessary, a bit of breathing room is worth it. This hack should take me into the 7,1 obsolesce time frame.

AIO 280mm Cooler VS AMD Wraith
I also added an Arctic Freezer II 280 liquid cooler. --> Yes it's as good as the reviews claim. CPU temps are hovering around 34(c) while typing this message. Let's be honest... the included wraith cooler is shyte and is noisy as heck. It works, but can rev-up to annoying levels quickly. While unavailable in the USA, it can be picked up from Amazon DE for 124Euro - about - $140USD delivered. That's only $20 more than the price+tax when it's available on Amazon, which is a lot less than what's charged by US based scalpers at this time.

Keeping the NVME SSD's cool
Recycling the Wraith Cooler RGB fan, it sits nicely on top of a 5700XT, cooling 2 PCIe 4.0 SSD's while adding a level of excitement and atmosphere to the case. While the Arctic Freezer II is light on the RGB front, keeping the Wraith RGB fan in the mix keeps helps maintain the aesthetics whilst keeping up the SSD's silently humming at 34(c).

I can't even get my machine to acknowledge the beta update. I think I need to figure out a way to upgrade to the latest open core. I am currently on 0.5.6. I have faked the system info to be a machine that should be supported.
 
installed big sur no problem

it runs much smoother than catalina

need to use open core 0.6

everything works great. i don’t have an ipad so i don’t know if sidecar works and don’t have an apple watch so i don’t know unlock with watch works

Success! Took a few attempts and quite a lot of patience as it seemed to freeze at "Forcing CS_RUNTIME" but I just needed to wait 35 mins! This is posted from Big Sur running in a ProxMox VM on a HPE DL 380

Yes. Actually, my first run at an Open Core install on my system too. Installed on a spare/separate SSD than my main Clover based Mojave install. I've never run Catalina on this machine to compare to, but so far seems to be as smooth/stable as Mojave/Clover. Maybe even a little better... I never realized how clean an Open Core install is compared to Clover.
