Thinner and lighter are not "innovations" that are easily marketable, especially since it's already been done with the Air 2. In contrast, things like 4k, live photos, force touch sound a lot more innovative than saying "thinner and lighter" - i.e. basically a rehash of of Air => Air 2.
It depends on what consumers are looking for. Personally, I've been hoping for a lighter mini, so that's exciting to me. It's true the Mini doesn't have any of the items you listed. But the Ipad line is running on the same line of processors, the mini could have all of those things if Apple wanted it to. It does have one innovation though, and that's split screen multitasking. That's a pretty big deal.

That's what the new Apple TV is for

Well the Apple TV is not a screen. I guess the phrase "iPad TV" sounds too much like "Apple TV", but essentially what I'm saying is that it's an iPad meant purely for entertainment - large screen with apps just for games or watching videos, and not needing stuff like the keyboard or stylus.

Split screen is more an iOS 9 feature. It's true that different consumers have different desires, but if you're talking about the general consumer base, you have to admit the iPad Pro / iPhone 6S has more features that are easier to show off in a global streaming event.

Features aren't everything. Some consumers are only interested in specific lines because that's what fits their use case. For many form factor is more important than individual features. A consumer who needs a portable tablet will likely have no use for the Pro no matter how nice it's features are. Similarly, someone who wants to produce content is likely going to prefer the Pro over the Mini. Apple should definitely spend time talking about new features, but they should remember that they need to keep their current customers too.

I haven't decided whether to upgrade yet, but I still adore my mini 2. It's still amazing to me I can carry around my personal library of books, internet-connection, and gps everywhere I go in my suit pocket. If only I'd known back when I was fiddling with my palm pilot someday we'd have this.

It brings to mind Louis CK's "Everything's Amazing and Nobody's Happy" routine.

If you think about it, Apple gave zero attention to the iPad Air 3.
Just for this year obviously because of the iPad Pro.

I could see next year, new iPad Air, new iPad Pro.

They're going to take a page out of the MacBook Air and Pro marketing and its going to work. The mini will get left out behind. Difference between iPhone Plus and iPad Mini is just too small.

Yup, a screen with an area that is 2.3x that of the iPhone+ is just too small....
Says the market and Apple. Apple already said it was fine that iPhone (6 plus) sales cannibalize iPad Mini sales because they rather have themselves do it than something else.

Sorry, that you can't accept the facts.

I provided you some facts... I'm not actually sure you've provided any....

Providing a number isn't a fact and facts is plural, meaning more than one so I'm not sure if you understand what a fact is and what plural means.

See the problem with your "fact" is that "2.3x is just too small" is not a fact. Its you googling what the difference between the screen size of the iPhone 6 Plus and iPad mini is and adding a snarky comment at the end.

What a fact actually is, is Tim Cook (your holy savior) actually quoting that "Have we had cannibalization? The answer is yes," Cook said when asked whether the iPhone 6 Plus is hurting the iPad. But it goes beyond just the new larger iPhone.

Please...try a little harder. Just a mini bit more.

Lol seriously? You're trying to prove your point by arguing semantics and declaring that Tim Cook is my holy savior? Ok, clearly this discussion is going nowhere. You win. Goodbye.

Just an easy trick to get Apple fanboys whirled up.

Its k. Just chill.

If Tim Cook can't convince you, I'm afraid no one can.

THAT IS AMAZING. thanks for posting that. I'm old enough to echo his sentiments. Really made me laugh. From UK so don't know much about him, but will look up.

Hurting iPad, did't say mini.

Exactly. I believe when Cooks said iPad, he meant the overall market of iPad. Not just Mini or Air.

Ultimately it's to each of his/her own. I, for one, compared iPhone 6 plus and Mini side by side and I am still buying Mini for my usage (browsing, reading, the tablet app experience). iPhone 6+ does give more pleasant viewing experience but it's still not an iPad.

The iPhone Plus line costs $750 base price and is generally used with a contract. The iPad mini is $400 at base price and most people aren't using it with a contract. The cannibalization statement wasn't made with regard specifically to the iPhone Plus line and the iPad mini. It originally came from Steve Jobs, and at the time it was made I think it was referencing the iPhones cutting into the iPod's sales (but I can't remember exactly).

Which is all to say... I know it's a sentiment that gets echoed around here, saying that the iPhone Plus takes away from the iPad mini, but I really don't think people view them as directly competing products.

There are definitely those who find that the 6+ make a replacement for an iPad mini. In particular, the 6+ aspect ratio better fits most widescreen movies, and for those who like to watch movies on their commute, the 6+ is more portable while providing sufficient size to view it (without black bars on a 4:3 device).

The iPad mini still tends to do better for books, magazines and web browsing however. Certainly, the 6+ cannibalizes the iPad mini's market to some extent, but I do feel it still has its place. Either way it's all gravy - we get the choice we want.

However, Apple's rather extensive lineup means that it's getting more and more difficult for them to focus, which I believe is the reason why the iPad Air got virtually no love and the iPad mini 4 barely a mention. This may be the status quo going forward.

The iPad mini still has use for those who prefer a phone smaller than the 6 plus, like either the 6 or 5s. I don't have the current numbers, but the last time I checked the iPhone 6 sold better than the 6 plus, so while there may be some cannibalization, there still seems to be a fairly big potential market for the mini.

I have LG G3 with 5,5 inch display, which has the same diagonal size as iPhone 6 Plus/6S Plus and i can't imagine being without a tablet. Therefore it's quite baffling to me to hear and see all these comments saying that 7,9 inch screen is useless when you own an 5,5 inch smartphone... It's ridiculous, the difference in size and use between these 2 devices is really huge and therefore all these comments are nonsense, or at least for me... ;)

For those who don't believe me I'll try to give them an example (advice), try watching movies on an 5,5 inch screen and then on 7,9 inch screen (even with 4:3) a tell me what's better... Or try browsing the web for a long time period a tell me what is more pleasant... And there's many more... ;)

An 9,7 inch iPad on the other hand is too big, heavy and ,,clumsy" (not quite sure if this word can be used even for a thing???) to be a real portable device, which is the reason why I personally prefer iPad Mini to iPad Air... => iPad Mini takes advantages of great portability and big screen, which is perfect!

i have a 6 plus and air 2 and will probably trade in the mini 2 for a 4. For people who don't have nba hands, there is something perfect about the size of a mini.

While the idea of a replacing my mini with a phone is attractive, none of the phones I know of does it for me. One of my main uses for the mini is as an e-reader. Many of my documents are iin PDF format and aren't easily reformatted for a smaller screen. For me, the mini is the perfect size, just small enough to fit in a suit jacket pocket and just large enough for reading PDFs. While not everyone will want such a device and some will be happy with a 6+, I expect there are enough people like myself to make it worth Apple's while to support the device.

I'm not going to upgrade my iPad until 3D touch goes into the iPad line. That's the killer feature I want. You know, I really hope the Mini still exists for that. It's the only form factor of the iPad I need.
