It's finally Friday, June 19. Lines will start to form in Apple Stores and AT&T stores across the US in about an hour. This thread is for iPhone 3G S owners to post their first impressions, or just brag that they have an iPhone 3G S. I'll be getting my iPhone 3G S in a few days from the online Apple Store.

One thing I'm particularly interested in that seems to have never really been mentioned is how the screen compares to the iPhone 3G. I know that the difference between the screens on the iPhone 3G and the first-gen iPhone were night and day. The warmer color temperature improved color accuracy, blacks were much deeper and whites were purer, the screen was much brighter (I normally used my iPhone at full screen brightness and that didn't feel bright enough, I can use the iPhone 3G at 30% and it's bright enough), and it was just better overall. That was one of my favorite things about the iPhone 3G. From videos I've seen of them side-by-side, the iPhone 3GS seems to have a better black level, but colors might be less accurate. The oleophobic screen will be interesting, too. I wonder if that will change the feel of the screen's surface as well as reducing fingerprints.

    I got mine!

Used a personal shopping appointment to bypass the queues at the Regent Street store. All done and out the store by 9:15 (had a 9:00 appointment).

First impression? Disappointed! No zoom on the video camera. I thought there was a limited zoom. I don't know where I got the idea. Perhaps I imported it into my mind in a comparison with a Mino Flip.

The genius who served me didn't know how to force quit apps; had to look it up on the online manual [previously you held down the home button, but that activates the voice control now!]

I am grateful to be able to slim down my pockets to one device from previously lugging around a pda and phone.

The 3gs is much quicker, snappier than the 3g. Although this could be because I don't have any extra apps on it yet.

It's quick. No doubt about it. The oleophobic screen passed the butter croissant fingers test.

So based on your first impressions....

Quite a few lucky people are waiting for or have gotten their new 3G S. I'm in no hurry to upgrade, but I really want to know if you all think it's worth it to upgrade to a 3G S from a 3G.

Thanks in advance! (I know there are a lot of similar threads, but now people can actually compare the 2)

Got mine at 08:20 this morning, was out the door by 08:35.
Just synced it all up and seems to work fine.
I don't think there will be the same queues this year as they had pre-orders etc.....
32gb black in the end. Was toying with saving my money and going for the 16gb, but I would have regretted it in the future.

    I'm very pleased with my black 32GB 3G S.

It is really does seem a lot faster than my 1st gen, and a lot smoother.

I have tested the screen and there are no dead pixels and no negative blacks - in fact the screen looks really good playing video. It is still getting fingerprints, they just don't seem quite as noticeable as on my 1st gen screen.

Voice dialing works well at home! (It wasn't that good in the AppleStore due to all the background noise...)

The video recordings look great, and the Maps are far more useful with the compass i.e. they automatically turn so they are oriented correctly.

My new iSkin fuse2 (for the 3G) fits the 3G S perfectly i.e. it IS the same size.

All in all very pleased :D

Seem very good in many ways imop. The new coating helps and the speed is very good. The compass in google maps isn't great especially in the car tho and reception in poor signal areas is no better so far.

chuffed with my BLACK 32GB too. Purchased the crystal screen and sena black leather case to take it home in. I already have about 10 cases but wanted it snug on the trip home lol.

Very happy, day or playing with it now.

Still I'm a month nearer the end of my O2 contract!

Got to my local O2 store half an hour before it opened (at 9). There was me, and my poor poor suffering wife (but she is a good sport), and that's all, nobody else joined the 'queue' untill 3 08:55.

I got the white 32 GB (I love the way the white contrasts with the chrome writing). I am very happy with it. The video implementation is great, it was too easy to send a video MMS on the move. The voice recognition blew me away. It recognised both western and ethnic names without a problem.

I love the ease and response of the click-to-focus on the camera.

Absolutely in love with the compass reorientation of the maps, but I was dissapointed that the compass doesn't work too great in the vertical orientation.

As for the speed, the phone clearly is smoother and has more power than the old one, and if the last 2 years are any indication this will definitely come into play as the software updates are rolled out.

Not that longer wait in our O2, 30 Mins max. Well 'Endowed' O2 Lady served me, was very good. As i have a 3G Contract i didnt need to top up £10 either!

3G S itself feels sturdier than the 3G, and the Silent Switch is a lot better.

Just finished syncing, and have uploaded a quick video test, will link when its ready.

Got a 32G in white at the Apple store in the Trafford Centre when it opened. I was about 15th in a queue of about 60. I got it on PAYG and the activation was very quick and painless. Got it home, sync'd all the stuff from my 3G and swapped the sim cards over. back in business now. Compass is brilliant. Best digital compass I have seen. Much better than on my Garmin 60csx. Seems much quicker. Movies look good. But how the hell do you get them into iMovie.

    Screen colours are warmer

Picked up a white 32GB 3GS on PAYG this morning from the Apple store. One thing I have noticed in comparison to my 3G is that the screen colours are much warmer - a lot less blue. My 3G has the 3.0 update so it's not a 3.0 software thing. It's fine though.

Can any of you answer this? I am interested in the video recording on the 3Gs but I've read that with the auto focus it causes problems when recording video. If you move around the camera keeps auto focusing on different subjects and you can't press to focus like you can with the camera. This is a major problem in my book, can any confirm this to be true?

Yes you cant manually focus it, but it does its best to focus on the subject.
