I gave my 5 year old MacBook Pro to my son and bought myself the 13 in. MacBook Pro. His new pc after 3 months crashed and it's in the shop getting fixed under warranty. My son is impressed with the Mac and I really like the the 13 in. I was a little worry about the 13 in., but I really like the size.

Question for those who may know: Should I start up the computer once since it's brand new before upgrading the RAM or can I just replace the stock 2x2GB with the 4x4GB I purchased? Any informed answers would be greatly appreciated!

It would be slightly safer to boot it up once as it came in the box, just to make sure it boots (so you know if you have to send it back). Under the assumption that you don't have a warranty issue sitting in your box, there's no detriment to upgrading the RAM before first boot.

haha, That's what every Mac user has been telling me forever. Get a mac, get a mac.

My response was always, "No, I don't want to learn a whole new system after 20+ years of using Windows..."

But I'm such a proponent of iPads and iPhones it seems like a natural progression.

Well, even this guy can figure out OS X:

Yes the OP should test it to see if everything behaves normally (try for a few days) then change RAM to see if behavior is different.

I just ordered my first mac too, switching mainly because I was so impressed with my iPhone4 and wanted a much more powerful computer than what my dying PC has, so I figured why not give the iMac a shot. I got the same configuration (you didn't mention your hard drive options...I went with the 256GB SSD + 1TB HD).

I'm excited. It'll arrive on the 20th and my 16GB of RAM should arrive tomorrow.

I went with the 1 TB drive and already ordered a 2 TB external drive for it too. Thought about the SSD but it's so small.

I just did the same 2 weeks ago, it's an amazing computer, but one thing I'd change is the mouse acceleration in OS X, if you have always used windows as me, I'm sure you'll find it a bit annoying.

Oh and my advice, get another mouse/keyboard if you have big hands, apple ones are way to small for me.

You can change the mouse tracking speed in System Preferences > Mouse to make it faster or slower just like you can in Windows.

My situation:

Alright so first off, I want to apologize for how long and boring this is going to be. I just want some advice here on the situation that just happened. I just made this account to post my situation here, so forgive me for being a newbie.

Alright so, two days ago I had finally saved up enough money to be able to afford a base model 27" iMac. I haven't had a computer for while now because I sold my old PC laptop to be able to put money towards my new apple computer. Just like most of the population now and days, I'm pretty poor. I clean post offices for a living and can hardly afford gas to drive to my nearest apple store, which is 40 minutes away. So forgive me for being semi-"upset" here.
Yesterday I was on my computer and I was just browsing the web when I realized the bottom of my screen was more yellow than the rest. After doing some research, I realized that I had gotten one of the iMac's that still has the "yellow tinge" problem. I asked my mom and dad to look at my computer and see if the notice anything weird and they both said "yeah, it's more yellow at the bottom." I mean, even though it's really faint, even they could still see it.
I do a lot of photography, as I'm hoping to become a professional photographer and plan on going to college for it next year. So, basically I would want my monitor to be properly "colored" and calibrated. The fact that I've also read that the "yellowing" gets worse overtime isn't very appealing either.
Since I bought it two days ago, I figured I could just bring it right back and exchange it for another one. I ended up walking into the apple store at 7:47PM, (my local store closes at 9:00PM). At the front when I walked in, I explained to one of the sales associate people my situation with the screen yellowing. He starts looking at his iPad and is like "Yup, we're all booked up on appointments until tomorrow, so you're going to have to come back". I told him that I just bought this two days ago. He says "Yeah, I'm sorry but we still need to verify that your product has a defect, so the next opening you have for an appointment is for tomorrow at 4:00pm. Do you want it?" I was like "Yeah sure." I tried to play the "oh poor me" thing and was like yeah I live 40 minutes away, there's absolutely no way someone could even look at it?" He just says "No, sorry man." So I just left.

Okay correct me if I'm wrong here, but on the receipt it says "If you are not satisfied with your product, bring it back within 14 days for a full refund or exchange".
What do they need to make an appointment for to verify then? Do I just need to make an appointment for someone to walk out back and get another one? I just don't get it, I'm sorry for my misunderstanding here. If someone would care to explain what I'm missing here that would be great.
Thanks so much in advance.
Wish me luck when I go back tomorrow.

You can change the mouse tracking speed in System Preferences > Mouse to make it faster or slower just like you can in Windows.

I'm not talking about tracking speed, but acceleration software (When you slow down your movement with your hand the mouse goes slower, if you do it fast, it goes faster)

Annoying as hell trying to close/open windows at your first week into the Mac

I totally see how that could p-ss you off big time... but I'd be happy as heck I had a warranty and I didn't get it from a second party. That said, the holier than heck Apple corp. is like that; we all love their products, and don't they know it.
I live on an island in Hawaii, Kauai, and there is only one little Apple store here; most times one counter person. You could be in there to buy a $20 remote, and or ask a few questions and either be in a line listening to a newb ask newb questions, or be doing that to others in line after you. It's almost absurd at times. (they have 2 salespersons there occasionally).
What can you do?

That's just poor customer service. Like you said a majority of us are poor and purchasing an iMac is a major investment. It would be nice for :apple: and other corporations to treat us like ****ing human beings instead of just a number. That guy that helped you is such a tool  This world is just getting worse and worse everyday... I'll stop right there because I can go off on a major tangent over corporate america and such...

Anyways... Good luck tomorrow!

I have never got used to the acceleration and I am still in search for the 'fix'. Apple should just provide a little option in the system preferences where you can change this behavior.

Ask to speak to the Manager and I'm certain he will issue you a replacement immediately assuming they have your base configuration in stock. You are correct in that Apple have a World-Wide 14 day no questions asked replacement/refund policy, assuming the damage/fault was not caused by yourself.

They will want to verify that in the box there is actually a working Mac though. Over here in the UK it was not un-common a few years ago for some people to place bricks in the box of an expensive and heavy item, turn up at the store with the box asking for a refund and being given the cash without the store first checking the contents.

Annoying as hell trying to close/open windows at your first week into the Mac

When I first switched to Mac, I tried several of the supposed software fixes and none of them made my Mac mouse behave the way I expected. I love my iMac, but to this day, I still say Windows mouses behave better. As near as I can tell it is not fixable. That's the bad news.

The good news is you WILL get used to it. It may take a month, but eventually you will stop noticing the frustrating mouse acceleration issue. The other super huge aggravation for me has been fixed with Lion with the addition of a true cut and paste function integrated into Finder. Its omission was so stunning to me when I started with Snow Leopard it was nearly a deal breaker for me!

But there are so many other huge pluses to OSX that you will love it ... I promise!

2 things:

1. The mouse acceleration works more like windows if you get an aftermarket non-apple mouse. i have a logitech cordless mouse that i occasionally use with my mini, and it works like it does in windows.

2. try a magic trackpad with the gestures in lion. its awesome. i used to hate trackpads until i went apple, i bought a magic trackpad even for when i'm at my desk, and I love it. only use the mouse for games and graphic stuff. other than that, trackpad all the way....

Could someone explain how this mouse behaviour is different? I switched from Win to Mac, and am using a Logitech mouse. See no different behaviour at all [like someone said, might be because of a third party mouse]. Pretty curious though.

Just bought 21.5" imac yesterday!!! two words: "wow!"

What a quantum leap!! or should i say quad cored leap! i've only used chrome so far for some browsing and so far so it's blisteringly fast!

I want to thank the folks in the mac mini forum who gave me their $.02, because originally i thought i wanted the mini, but they convinced me the imac would be a better purchase. so glad i bought one!!

I was a diehard :apple: laptop owner for years: started with power book pismo g3 (massive hardware problems with this 'upside-down mac icon' mac!), then had the durable ibook g4, and lastly a 2007 macbook that's beyond retirement.

i know a refresh will be hitting in the next quarter or who-knows-when, but I have zero buyer's remorse!! there's no looking back- i'm looking forward to be using this fine machine for years to come.

what's next for me? how could it possibly get even better? A thunderbolt external hard drive dock coupled with a SSD drive when the prices come down to my level. saving my loose change starting right now!

cheers!

D'oh!

I was waiting to get paid today and puchase a refurbed iMac 27"/i7/radeon 6970 this afternoon, however as luck would have it, the one I was looking at is now sold out and not available to order.

Does anyone know how often I can expect to see that particular config of iMac offered as a refurbed unit? Now I'm toying with the idea of getting the 27"/i5/Radeon 6970, before it sells out too. I'd really prefer the i7, should I take a chance on waiting?

(I understand it's probably a gamble if I wait to see another i7 offered with the upper end video card.) Does anyone with more experience than I have on watching the refurbs have any advice?

Thank you in advance.

Just received my 27" iMac in the mail yesterday, I'm very very impressed.

Specs:
  • 27 inches of pristine screen real estate (far cry from the 13" MB)
  • i7 3.4GHz
  • 16 GB RAM (Aftermarket, OWC)
  • 1TB HDD (Have 2TB of external storage; 1TB FW800, 1TB USB)
  • AMD 6970M 2GB GDDR5
  • Keyboard with Num Pad (for data entry)
  • Magic Mouse
  • Plus a DVI-Mini Display port adapter for an external 22" LCD Monitor

After one night of playing around and setting it up, I'm very impressed.

Still getting used to the functionality and UI of OSX Lion (could only get to snow leopard with MB), and the Magic Mouses touch interface. The touch scrolling is a bit annoying when playing games that track the scroll for inventory selection, however that is a minor issue.

Still in the process of shifting over the essential items from the ol' BlackBook, decided on a relative fresh start with the iMac, and installing all the necessary apps.

My reasoning for not waiting for the apparent 2012 update was due in part to eligibility for the education store discount, and I never buy the first gen of any update or object due to teething issues.

Overall I'm very impressed. Upvote for the iMac!

Congrats man! Mine should arrive today and I'll have it hooked up after work! I can hardly wait. My Mac version of CS5 should arrive today as well and my 16GB of RAM is already here. I got pretty much the same setup but with the SSD as well. I look forward to getting a lot done with this thing, like clearing out my camera from all the pics that the PC couldn't handle.

On a side note, anyone know of any audio interfaces utilizing thunderbolt that aren't crazy expensive? I guess it'll be a while yet before more consumer level interfaces are introduced, the only ones I've been able to find must be for the professional market.

Sorry it took me so long to give an update on my situation. I brought it back the next day and they gave me a new iMac no problem. We opened it up there and looked and made sure there was no yellow tint. I'm noticing now though I have 2 stuck pixels on the screen. Ones in the top left hand corner and one is towards the middle/bottom. It's not a big deal at all, but I'm just wondering, will this get worse overtime and should I exchange it again? Or should I just not worry about it and no other pixels should die or get stuck.
Thanks

If you have dead pixels ( or more likely sub pixels) there is no reason to think you will get anymore. However if it was me I would exchange as I hear Apple take back any screen if it has pixel issues.
