I'm currently waiting for the 2012 model to be released before I buy my first iMac. Then I will see the price difference between the new ones and what's currently available. That's what I was going to do when they announced the iPhone 4. But I got so into all the new functions decided I just couldn't by a 3G model by then. I guess it's no summer holiday for me this year!

You won't see any price changes, when Apple releases new models what happens normally is the sell off older inventory at the same price point they're selling at now or they route then older inventory to the refurbished center and sell them as refurbished products at a discounted price. If you are looking to save money you can do that now by buying refurbished from Apple's online store, this is the ONLY way Apple sells refurbished stock.

However if you are simply looking to buy the latest and greatest then wait until the 2012 models are released.

Remember though this site is called Mac Rumors for good reason, rumors are sometimes true, mostly not and almost always a variation of the truth. In other words use it for entertainment value only.

Here in the UK I've been checking for refurbished iMacs or mini macs but have seen nothing for ages. I would prefer to buy the newest release but will have to see how the finances are when they come out.

Just took the plunge on a 3.4 with ssd refurb. Mostly due to a upcoming conference in the us, so I had a onw week window to get it. And with a beneficinary exchange rate made, the refurb one is a no brainer. I know I'll be drooling over the new model, but a i7 with 3.4 and a ssd will anyway beat my current q6600 pc from 08 and I figure the iMac will last for a long while.

One question, I want to change the mouse and the keyboard, is that possible with refurbished models? I mean before I enter the apple store to pick it up? Can I contact the online apple store and get them to insert the right one in the box?

hey guys,
took the plunge today and bought a brand new macbook pro 15" and a 27" iMac.

could not wait any longer with the money burning a hole in my pocket i would have bought bits with the car until the newer ones were released so just bit the bullet.
set it up this evening and how easy is that !
screen is amazing on the 27" plus it looks so clean with no wires anywhere (wireless keyboard and trackpad)

Cant wait to get my head around everything !

In general, no, you can only pick your mouse and keyboard if you buy a new computer through Apple, but some have had good luck when asking if they can exchange at the Apple Store. It never hurts to ask.

Thanks, but I actually called them and asked and no. Also, since I need the Norwegian keyboard (obviously not stock) i will need to order a separate. Not optimal, but better than nada. Atleast its 2/3 of the price.

@Marshy

hey next time money is burning a hole in your pocket ,come to the track with me and we'll triple it on a horse. Enjoy your new stuff!

Finally pulled the trigger on the 27" Quad Core i5, 1TB, 4GB RAM iMac refurb from the Apple Store. I've been contemplating about making the move from my 2.4Ghz Aluminum MacBook and my 2.26Ghz MacMini to an iMac and I finally decided to go for it. Ended up selling both the MacBook and MacMini on craigslist to pay for the majority of the iMac.

I wasn't really using my iPad as much as I wanted to since whenever I was sitting on the couch I'd just grab the MacBook to surf on, so now I'll have the iMac in our office for my computing needs and be forced to use the iPad to surf when sitting on the couch.

I cannot wait for this thing to get here, went with two day shipping so it should be here either Wednesday or Thursday - the anticipation is killing me!

Got my refurbed 3.4 i7 yesterday. Got 8 gb instead of 4 (that I ordered) so I'm pretty happy. The computer seems fine so far. Havent really put it trought it's pases yet, since I'm not home. Looking forward to getting some more VMs installed with some additional ram on this machine. It's going to suit my livingroom.

I am hearing a low but audible sound from the exhaust on the back, is this normal? When the room is quiet I hear it when im sitting in front of it.

Why I didn't wait for the update...

I ordered a 27" with the following configuration:
•3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
•4GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
•1TB Serial ATA Drive + 256GB Solid State Drive
•AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2GB GDDR5

Oh, and the numerical keyboard (needed for data entry!)

I'll upgrade to 16GB RAM later.

This will be my home computer and my first Mac. Now onto why I didn't wait for the update.

1.) I need a new computer. My current PC is in its death throes (I have to turn it off every night because sometimes it starts making this loud noise, like an ongoing computer fart, that will keep me awake otherwise). Whenever I bring home work, the most demanding of which involves CS5 and/or ImagePro, it is painfully slow and often crashes. The PC was great for websurfing and the like, but clearly can't handle what I bring home from work and is so slow in dealing with photographs that I've just been storing all my hobby shots on my DSLR and decided to wait until I get my new iMac to start sorting and manipulating them.

2.) What I plan on using this new computer for can easily be handled by the above configuration. I will continue to do work on it (spreadsheets, Photoshop and image analysis) as well as personal hobby stuff: image work and recording via Superior Drummer and some DAW that I've yet settled on. I wanted to make sure the next computer I bought would be capable a few years down the road should any great new software come about for music.

3.) I have no use for USB 3.0 that I'm currently aware of. The Firewire should be more than plenty, and if any interfaces for recording come about with Thunderbold technology, well hey, I'll have two of those ports!

4.) I really need a new computer and didn't want to wait 2-6 months after the next upgrade to see if there were any initial problems with the next generation. I can't say I'm very knowledgable about computers compared to most of the people posting on here from what I've seen, but if they're anything like cars, I know I don't want to be taking a risk on a new model when MACS COST AS MUCH AS THEY DO! (I am not saying they're not worth it, I don't know yet but I'm hoping they are or I wouldn't be spending so much of my hard earned money, but the point remains.)

5.) Related to 3 and 4: I know what I'm getting with this computer; what the next generation offers I don't. I've read all the speculations (and silly arguing) on this forum and decided what Apple currently offers is more than enough for me. I know many people have said one would have to be "mad" to buy an iMac now, but I bought one anyhow.

I have no loyalty to any particular product when it comes to technology with the possible exception of Roland :p. But computers to me are just tools for getting the things I want to do done. I'm tired of working at home at a fraction of the pace I do at my work computer (another PC but much faster). I want to be able to record, edit my photos, and see if video editing brings me as much joy as the first two hobbies do. So, I pulled the trigger.

I'd like to thank the MacRumors forum, all the contributors and posters. I've been visiting and reading for the past 4 months or so and it has helped me make this decision.

Can't wait to work with that big beautiful 27" display :D

Going to pick up my Refurb 27" i7 3.4 tonight after the gym :) Already have the ram at home to max it out and even splurged on the razer mac mechanical KB and mouse. Finally replacing the last windows PC at home.

Newbie iMac user

Finally did it after many reviews. Picked up my 3.4 Imac 27", 1TB machine. Also ordered upgrade for ram to 16g and 3TB external HD for storage and backup. Still boxed up and will dive into the setup and configuration this weekend. Have not had a Mac sine the IIci days so will be looking to this forum for any help.

Just ordered my first Mac ever

Pretty excited. I've had pc's my entire life and was never going to go with a Mac until I just finally got fed up with my awful windows os.

I have an ipad2 and iPhone 4 and love them both so I'm hoping I love my new iMac as much.

I love computer games but otherwise will use for email, web browsing, work, and some video editing.

I know I have a ton to learn but I'm excited about that too.

Anyhow I ordered the 3.4 ghz iMac 27 inch with 4 mb of RAM (I already ordered replacement RAM to take it to 16gb) and the 2 gb video card.

Can't wait! Thanks for all the great info on this forum. Learning a lot.

I just did the same 2 weeks ago, it's an amazing computer, but one thing I'd change is the mouse acceleration in OS X, if you have always used windows as me, I'm sure you'll find it a bit annoying.

Oh and my advice, get another mouse/keyboard if you have big hands, apple ones are way to small for me.

Congrats, opting for the best 27", thing will be a beast

I got the lowest end 2011 27" and it handles anything I throw at it (upgraded ram to 12, also I don't game)

enjoy the ecosystem!

Congrats.

Got an ipad a few months ago, liked it and got one for my dad. Then wanted to see what a Mac is all about.

Got an Air on 24th Nov, after having been a Windows user all my life. By early Jan, I had got an Air for my wife, iMac for my daughter and the Mini for my dad. So, just watch you credit card now :)

haha, That's what every Mac user has been telling me forever. Get a mac, get a mac.

My response was always, "No, I don't want to learn a whole new system after 20+ years of using Windows..."

But I'm such a proponent of iPads and iPhones it seems like a natural progression.

I can't even begin to explain how much better I like the OS [as well as the hardware] to Windows. Windows is not even close.

I agree - being a fairly new Mac person myself (purchased by first MBP 13 in Dec 2011) I thought I would struggle with "unlearning" PC and learning Mac. So far, it was not that much of a transition. I love my MBP 13 and does any and everything I need it to do. I have to say, it would be VERY difficult for me to go back to a PC based computer after having worked on my Mac. I finally get what folks have been saying for years - get a MAC.

I just ordered my first mac too, switching mainly because I was so impressed with my iPhone4 and wanted a much more powerful computer than what my dying PC has, so I figured why not give the iMac a shot. I got the same configuration (you didn't mention your hard drive options...I went with the 256GB SSD + 1TB HD).

I'm excited. It'll arrive on the 20th and my 16GB of RAM should arrive tomorrow.

Question for those who may know: Should I start up the computer once since it's brand new before upgrading the RAM or can I just replace the stock 2x2GB with the 4x4GB I purchased? Any informed answers would be greatly appreciated!

^^Unfortunately I am too cheap to switch to a Mac at my office, so I have a Windows at my office. When it dies I guess.

Home was easy, as all the computers needed replacing anyway.
