Hi All,
I have been a PC guy all my life but I also edit video so you can understand my frustration when I switched to high-def..... Just set up my brand new 27" 3.4ghz i7 iMac yesterday and I'm pretty amazed with it!

Just purchased my first Mac! It is a refurbished 21.5 iMac. I am aware of the updates soon rolling out, but I am not a power user so this model should suit me just fine. :D

Looking forward to the experience!

Need help guys,

I have ordered my imac for a week now and with no sign of stock and my current PC crashing randomly, I am in a bit of urgent need for new iMac.

I have two options.
1 Refurbished iMac 27-inch 3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 for £1500
or
iMac 27-inch 3.1GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i5 for £1349

If I was buying some thing worth £100, I will not hesitate to buy refurbished but it I am buying £1500 worth item I am bit scared on what if I get unit that gives me problems all the time?

on other hand I can wait for new one but god knows how long will that take and even if there is iMac refresh on it's way how much different will it make? I can live without USB 3 or HDMI port or matt screen.

Bottom line, what are the chances of this refurbish iMac to turn out defective?

Please help :)

If you buy a refurb from Apple, you'll be fine. You probably won't even notice any cosmetic flaws that might be present.

If you buy a refurb some another seller like Amazon, it's a crap shoot. Some of them that are resold were never "refurbished", and were modded badly by their original owners.

Thanks forty2j,

I got it from Apple UK store so I guess I am safe :) it was higher spec than what I originally ordered and will be delivered date? either 10th or 11th!! I am happy now :D

Estimated Delivery Date (Subject to change) Oct 11, 2012
Product Description RFB IMAC 27"/3.4QC/2X2GB/1TB/6970M-GBR

Agreed. I'd 100% recommend the refurb via Apple. Comes with the same protection as a brand new machine, plus it's still eligible for AppleCare. Best deal out there. As mentioned, they often come with new casing, so you won't notice any cosmetic flaws.

I finally got my refurbished iMac and as I was hoping Apple sent me higher spec than I originally ordered. Higher graphic card and higher hard drive space.

PC user all my life. Just crossed over to the dark side.

MC814LL/A
27" iMac -3.16GHz Core i5
12GB RAM
1TB HDD
AMD Radeon HD 6970M graphics

Got it last night, can't wait to go home to play with it!

Just bought a used imac 21.5 (current model) off eBay. Just under half the current price so not worried if Apple go and announce the new model iMac tomorrow lol. For my needs the current model is perfect anyway.

just bought a used imac with 2 years applecare remaining. cant wait for it to come now.

now 12gb or 16gb for ram?

Hey guys,

I bought mine from UK retailer called Comet. I placed my order on 30th Sep. It's my first MAC and I am well excited.

It's a 27" 3.1GHz with 4GB ram. Shame though that nobody have any of this machine in stock and they have no idea when they can deliver it. I got £300 off from the original price of £1649, otherwise I would order one directly from Apple. Also Apple UK don't do refurbish iMacs :(

Pray for me that I get my giant some time next week (*Wishful thinking I know!!!*)

yeah they do. I just had a 21.5 inch i5 refurb model delivered last week. If there's no stock it doesn't appear in the Refurb listings, but keep checking. It's what I did

If you're buying refurb, you're cost conscious. If you're cost conscious, you should use it a few days with your normal intended activity, and check Activity Monitor to see how often you're using swap space. That will tell you if, and how much, RAM you need.

well it came and i had a little problem as the screen isnt working so its going to be fixed on sat. good job its still got applecare.

Iam new to Mac from Windows

Well a few weeks back after quite some time probably a year or two of eyeing the iMac I decided it was time to go for one. Yes I know new ones are about to come out. But after looking at my windows desktop which is now unpluged sitting under the stairs due to countless hours dealing with HD editing and constant ungrades I turned it off unpluged it and away it sat. I purchased a iPad and it fulfilled my email internet needs like a charm and only pushed me closer to making the full move to a iMac. Well Im 2 weeks into the new iMac and I can say for sure I will never go back to windows. Took awhile to figure out where files go etc and what is what. I probably called applecare over 100 times now lol sure they dread my calls for stupid questions. But every call has been so nice and helpful Im glad I got the applecare extended warranty. I have already upgraded the ram myself to 20 gb, two 8 gb ram sticks and then the stock two 2 gb sticks. Went pretty much all in with the i7 and the 27 big boy model. And I must say I have got more done in 30 mins on this iMac then I did on my windows machine. Just flat out easy and it does what you want. I must admit the stock 4 gb ram is pretty doggy if your HD editing so upgrade for sure there. But aside from that Iam sooooo happy. Bye windows RIP

BTW I bought a refurb 27 iMac i7 3.4, 1 tera byte drive, 4 gb ram, 1 gb video card. $1769 with government discount. Ordered over phone and my salesmen was AMAZING! Hooked me up with the government discount due to working for my muni water dept. Also gave me a discount on my apple extended care. All said and done $1869 for iMac with 3 year apple care. Wish I got his name he deserves a raise!! Get this I was literally $4 short in my account for the applecare my salesmen was willing to put in that $4 from his own pocket to get me the iMac with apple care 3 year. We ended up going another route but was just to funny to hear someone selling me something say that. I had the money but was late at night and banks were closed to transfer money around. Should of got that on audio apple FTW!!

you sound happy and seems like you got a good service.

i wasnt worried about buying one now either. although my computer hasnt died on me yet it was a prehistoric one which was noisy, ugly and low spec.

i did look at the refurb base model 21.5's as ive heard great things about the apple refurb's but one came up for £150 less than a refurb with 2 years applecare left.

seems like a good deal to me, i do need to use the applecare but thats what its there for. need to buy some ram and backup solutions now.

Go for the 27!!

Ok I know this may sound totally guy like. But go for the 27, it does shrink on you and size table wise it isnt to crazy bigger. I look at the 21's now and they look like babys. Like I said like all tv's , and monitors they feel huge at first but then they shrink on you. Plus having all this work space to multitask is sooooo nice.

The space I have in the corner of my kitchen literally wouldn't be enough for the printer and 27". I did think about it but the lack of space and extra cost took me to the 21.5".
I've been using a 17" monitor for the last 4-5 years so its rather a big jump from that anyways.
When I move house and get another office room I will most likely upgrade then.

The size of your monitor should be determined by two things only.

1. How far away do you sit from the screen? A 21.5" at 2 1/2 feet is identical to the field of vision of a 27" at 4 feet. 21.5" is literally ideal for arms length use. Research ideal viewing distances for screen size and field of view on google.

2. Do you want two browsers/programs open side by side? The 27" can replace having dual monitor set ups. Aka dual 13.5" monitors using your 27".

Reading Facebook in full screen or playing video games while sitting at arms length is not something anyone should do on a 27".

... agreed. My 50" plasma looks kind'a small to me now.

I remember when I first bought my old 32" "brick" TV and everyone though it was giant!

My 24" iMac is currently in for repair; I never even considered the 20" when I bought it.

When I order a new one it will definitely be 27" because if I was to go for the smaller size it would constantly play on my mind ("oh WHY didn't I just go all out & get the bigger size??" - kind of thing).

All that space to work with is superb. Even little things like having a video playing next to your browser while surfing is really nice. I'd never go for the smaller option ... if you're worried about the thing being too big, then just go for a laptop!

With the iMac I say ... big is beautiful!

;)

Just replaced my 24" iMac 2.8GHz (Early 2008). With the 21.5 iMac i5 2011 Base model. So much better. Got a great deal, $750 craigslist 3 years of apple care.

my desk is 100cm x 60cm.

ive never had a dual monitor setup so not worried about side by side programs.

took it to the local authorized apple place on the weekend to get the screen fixed.
