The "I just ordered/bought/got my new/refurb iMac" thread [merged]

I finally caved....my imac came today....after my windows laptop broke I decided to go Mac. It will suck to never be able to play as many games because of compatibility but hopefully this mac can last longer than my past 2 computers which have died on me....

If you want to buy yourself a windows license, you can Bootcamp your computer and still play any windows only games on your iMac...

iMac 2010 refurb i5-760 Radeon HD 5750

Hey, all! I've been following this forum for a while because I was looking to wait for the 2012 iMac, but given I'll be going to school in a few weeks I took the plunge and ordered a refurbished 2010 model.

Even though the 2011 base was the same as the 2010 high-end, I wanted the 2010 because it can be repurposed as a DisplayPort monitor. I also read here that the 5750 with 1GB of VRAM slightly outpaces the 6770m with 512MB

I also bought a refurb 27inch LED Cinema Display and I was wondering if I would experience significant lag in Mountain Lion with this model, having this display connected.

Thanks, guys!

Just bought a Mid-2011 27" iMac (2.7GHz i5/4GB/1TB~Seagate/MountainLion) open-box from best buy for about 1300 out the door. Currently taking it for a spin, so far I don't really notice a difference between this (currently typing on it) and my previous late-2008 15" macbook pro (2.53Ghz/8GB/120GB~Intel SSD/SnowLeopard).

I do have the return-window to take it back if it doesn't work out. However, I'll be without a computer as my macbook pro is no longer in the picture.

I'm wondering if I would have been better off with a macbook air to hold me over.

Shouldn't we just change the name of this thread to something more appropriate?

Such as, 'The "I just wasted/soiled 2000$/waited for nothing/don't know what to do about an iMac" Thread.'

Waited for nothing is probably appropriate. Loving my first iMac and wish I hadn't found this site and followed the neverending rumours.

Buy if you need it - there's no guaranteed a new iMac is coming out next month. Look at all the iPhone and iPad mini leaks, news, etc. Not a whisper about a new iMac.

Agree. I got tired of waiting and ordered last week. Should be here Friday. Got the 27" i5 w/2GB 6970M and 8GB of RAM. Figure in a year or two I can upgrade the CPU to an Ivy-bridge and pick up some speed.

Sandy Bridge sockets are compatible with Ivy bridge?

I always thought that the processor was soldered on or had unusual socket.

Yes, it works. Would be fairly simple to do. The problem is that it only nets you about 10% in performance (which only matters if you're doing something CPU-limited anyway), and wouldn't magically convert your ports to USB3 since that's the soldered-on chipset, not the CPU proper.

Haswell will be a different socket.

Received my iMac Friday and must say it was everything I had hoped for. Fast machine with a great display and form factor. I had considered getting a Mac Pro or even building a hackintosh again but it sits in our formal living room which sits at the front of the house. My wife loved the aesthetics of the iMac, it's a big reason why she agreed to turn the formal LR into more of a study in the first place, and so she really wanted the form factor rather than a tower that we'd have to find a way to hide.

I haven't tested performance much beyond running Civ 5 in full resolution with all options set to high. That's the way that game was meant to be played! I had to run it windowed on my 2008 iMac! I'll get around to testing the real reason for the upgrade later this week. That will be editing years worth of home movies and exporting them over to iTunes in HD so we can play them back over an Apple TV.

As for upgrades the Ivy Bridge will work but the performance increase will depend on what you move up to. In retrospect I should have bumped up to the i7 rather than the 2GB GPU but at least the i7 mistake can be rectified. I'm hoping to see 15-20% increase in a couple of years when I replace the i5 with an Ivy Bridge i7. I'll be putting in a SSD at some point as well. Not much else to do really. I'm hoping that by getting the best GPU the iMac has to offer that this one will last at least the 4 years that my last iMac did. At this point in my life I'm a casual gamer at best so it doesn't make sense to build a machine for something that I spend little time doing. Have I mentioned that I love the display :D?

Let me add that now that I finally upgraded Apple can fell free to announce a September release date for the new ones lol!

caved

I caved and bought an iMac, because my early '08 iMac was hopelessly slow. I'm irritated at the outdated tech I had to buy (I considered switching to PC, but it was just too much of a hassle), although am pretty happy with my machine. The 4GB definitely seems too little.

I'm also new to Lion, and think Expose is a step backward. Mission Control is just silly, when there are things like Butler and other launchers out there. I do like the wireless mouse.

In the end, I couldn't say goodbye to the Apple ecosystem--and would need more time to make the switch.

Hi all...

I just lost my patient on wainting for the new.iMacs and bought me a mid 2011. It is my first mac and so far i've.been enjoying it.

It all seems to run fast however I am thinking in add some extra ram. Is it a simple process?

Thanks

I'm sorry for your loss (of cash) :)

Adding in RAM is simple. It's one screw, located on the bottom of the chin. However you should first make sure RAM would be beneficial.
- Boot up fresh
- Use it normally for a day or so
- Open up Activity Monitor, and check the "Page Outs" on the RAM section

If the "Page Outs" are zero or very low, you're not using all the RAM you have and extra RAM won't help you.

I'm impatient...

However I just can't bring myself to buy what I guess is two year old technologu (processor etc wise) - even with a whpping 14% discount for a refurbished model :p

we don't even have refurbished in my country - we have to pay full price. Im still baffled to see the stock going down and up in stores, that so many actually buy that old machine still with that bloated price compared to the tech specs.

Exactly the same predicament I'm in. I really hope something comes out soon because my 2006 can't go on for much longer.

I was in a local Apple store getting my daughters iPhone looked at and there was a steady stream of large boxes coming out from the back to smiley customers, iMacs seemed to be selling well...

though you gotta be pretty stupid buying the current imac right now, expecially with all the rumors around.

Stupid is a little harsh. Uninformed is more accurate. This may come as a surprise but the general public is not spending their Sundays on macrumors.com. They want a new iMac so they go and buy one. A new one could come out a week after their purchase and they would likely never know. Or care. Ivy Bridge, SSD, a better GPU. These are things most people don't care about. They want a pretty computer that surfs the Internet and works well for email. Those of us on this website are the 1%.

LOL..place me in the uninformed category. My wife macbook crapped out on her, so we decided to run to the apple store and pick one up two days ago. I'm not a big fan of the iMac so I don't really keep up with it's model cycle. IF it does indeed come out Tues or within the 14day return policy...this thing is going right back.
