My manager has demanded I purchase an iMac today/tomorrow, regardless of if a refresh is announced this week.

If one is announced this week the day after I buy a 2011, is there a way to exchange the 2011 for a 2012?

Depends on who you purchase it from, but generally you should be able to swap it within the return period (14 days via Apple direct, 30 days via Amazon or Best Buy, 60 days for Best Buy Silver members).

If you're going through a specific business distributor you may have a problem. But if it makes you feel better, I think the chances are better of the new model being ~30 days+ away than being this week.

Ok. That's it I'm buying my sandy bridge imac.

Anyone have advice between these two models:

21.5"
2.8 quad core
8GB memory
256 SSD
6770M 512 VRAM
$2,119

or 27"
3.4 quad core
8GB memory
1 TB hard drive
2GB VRAM
$2,299

Basically the trade off is better GPU or SSD?

The 27" is better for gaming and photoshop. The 21" is better for normal day to day stuff.

I'd go with the 27" but 4GB of memory. It'll last you longer with the more powerful processor and RAM is easy, and much cheaper, to upgrade on your own. As for the SSD it;s a pain but can be installed later easier than a new CPU. Then there's the much larger monitor to boot.

Yahoo, I received my replacement machine yesterday from the Apple Store. It replaced a 27" i7 late 2009 model, with the newest i7 config, and upgraded video card. The only bummer was I asked Apple to install the SSD upgrade and i'd pay the difference. Sadly they didn't do it. Waiting on their callback since they did tell me twice they'd do it and never did.

I have 4 8gb of ram leftover from the older iMac that I need to sell. Where is a good classifieds for that? Guess eBay is my best bet.

Should I buy two 8gb sticks of ram, or four 4's? ( I currently have 4gb and it's dog slow.)

I'm looking to buy my first Mac as I want to use it to edit videos using Final Cut pro.
What should I go with and iMac or a Mac Pro?
I'm on a budget of 2K and was planning on getting a refurbished one from Apple
Thanks

I missed the fed-ex guy with my new iMac because I was in the back yard. Next drop off is Tuesday.

Go with 4 8gb sticks for 32gb total. It's less than $200 on crucial. :apple:

Based on my research, iMacs can boot off of a Firewire drive. What you can do is get an external Firewire enclosure, buy your own SSD (Newegg or whatever), put it in the enclosure, and boot off of that.

Bandwidth would be limited to around 80 MB/s but random accesses of small files (which is mostly what people do with their boot drives) would almost certainly be over 10 times faster, so, definitely worth it, and no iMac disassembly required.

As for the RAM, never buy a RAM upgrade from Apple. It's cheap and dead simple to do it yourself.

GPU speed is only important for 3-D video games and I suppose there is some stuff in Photoshop to offload certain filters to the GPU. But otherwise 2-D performance of all graphics chips these days is basically the same. In fact I would prefer the slower graphics chip myself--less power draw and less heat.

I just ordered a refurb iMac 27" with 3.4 gig Core i7, 1 TB drive, 4 GB RAM and the usual stuff.

I ordered 16 GB of memory from newegg.

Haven't got it yet. Can't wait.

But at the same time I am also apprehensive of all the things that could go wrong with a refurb. I tend to think that most of the refurbs are iMac's returned by people having yellow tint issues.

But I bought it under the impression that Apple will do a good job of doing quality control and inspection and make sure everything is working within specs, including the yellow tint issue.

Keeping fingers crossed!

Recieved my iMac today and I dont think I was or am ready for that humongous screen.

Checked for scratches or yellow tint and i have none. Booted the computer and made sure everything was good. Some people have gotten lucky getting 8 GB memory instead of the 4 GB etc... But mine was as per spec.

Then I started installing the 16 GB RAM and now I am typing on the iMac :)

I have built, bought and sold many computers in my life, but nothing prepares you for the iMac 27". A beast, visually and functionally.

Anyways, just thought I would report that my refurb iMac was great.

I just got it hooked up a few hours ago and I will post any issues in the coming days/weeks...

Enjoy your new super computer lol. You really will be happy with it

Thanks :)

I have many electronics and gadgets but none has given me the awe and smile as this iMac.. amazing machine.

Now cant wait to hook up the Lacie thunderbolt and .. Ahem... try to install Windows 7(Need it for work).

I hooked up my studio monitor speakers to the iMac using the digital output on the iMac (It sounds great listening to Ambient on iTunes Radio) and now my volume controls are of no use anymore. .. I know its optical signal.. but wonder how iTunes volume bar works?

Waiting for the iMac.

I ordered my 27" iMac last Saturday and opted for 'Express Delivery' which is suppose to take between 1-3days.. so really I should have it by tomorrow 'Wednesday' but in reality 'Express' shouldn't take more than 2days or is the Apple service different because the order status since Monday has been 'Processing Items'..

Reason I'm asking this is because I'm starting to feel that me paying an additional charge of £8 for 'Express Delivery' is a waste of money unless the 'Standard' delivery service is much longer?..

So I'd like to know if I have wasted my money?

Is it a new one or a refurb? Assuming its a refurb mine took two days for them to process(clean the machine, re install the OS, fix issues if any, package it to spec etc etc...)

I see... depends if you financed it or bought it using a credit card that could also take some time...

Not at all. I paid with a debit. They did also mention it will be delivered between 27 Sep - 1 Oct, which is weird because it suppose to take 1-3days instead it will take almost a week just to get the iMac or could it be because all the parts are not available?

Is it possible to can get a refund on the 'Express Delivery' if it arrives after Wednesday?

You could talk to Apple and see what they will do if it wasn't delivered within the said date.

Yeah I will do.

I checked out the 'Buyer's Guide' and it seem like I should wait for the new release if the rumours are true rather than waste all the effort on this one, what do you think?

I'd hate for Apple to release a new iMac a month after buying the previous version...

Well I just bought mine. The new one is probably not going to be radically any different rathe than the ivy bridge processors, USB 3.0 ports and a slimmer glass panel.

I went the thunderbolt way so USB 3.0 isn't much of a deal breaker.

But if you have the patience to wait.. then well you might as well.

I cringe every time I see a new post in this thread, much like many of you just did. Didn't mean to scare anyone with my false alarm.

Hey guys,

I bought mine from UK retailer called Comet. I placed my order on 30th Sep. It's my first MAC and I am well excited.

It's a 27" 3.1GHz with 4GB ram. Shame though that nobody have any of this machine in stock and they have no idea when they can deliver it. I got £300 off from the original price of £1649, otherwise I would order one directly from Apple. Also Apple UK don't do refurbish iMacs :(

Pray for me that I get my giant some time next week (*Wishful thinking I know!!!*)
