First Apple Product Ever!

Just bought myself my first ever Apple product (that means I've never even bought an iPod). My first Apple computer!

The new 27-inch iMac!

Configuration

3.4GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7
8GB 1600MHz DDR3 SDRAM-2X4GB
1TB Fusion Drive
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX 2GB GDDR5
Magic Trackpad
Apple Wireless Keyboard

Will install more RAM later if I need it. (So glad the 27" has that slot for upgrading RAM.) :)

I originally ordered this last Thursday and canceled it due to GeForce 675 1GB and wanted the 680 2GB. Because i canceled it i had to go through Barkley and wait until today. At the end, found out i could've put my order through last Thursday after my cancellation but due to the apple rep that was helping me last Thursday wasn't thinking clearly! Also, i wasn't thinking clearly when i chose the 1GB GeForce!

Anyway, Cheers!

I just pulled the trigger on a 2011 21.5" refurb, but the higher model with the 2.8Ghz i7 for $1229. I just couldn't get past the lack of DVD drive (which I still use), the huge question about upgradability and the big cost difference of the new models.

To get a 2012 21.5" iMac with 16gb of ram and a decent drive was going to be at least $1949! I already had some extra memory (from a MBP after upgrading it) and a SSD (same) so it costs me nothing on the 2011 to upgrade.

I'll lose out on thinness, USB 3.0, and probably the biggest thing the better anti-reflective screen.

For those that will miss the disc drive, why not "borrow" the drive from an older Mac that still has one? That's what I do for my Air...

Sure that works for people who have other drives, although for many purposes it is REALLY slow. Do you really want to rip CDs/DVDs or even watch DVDs that way? probably not.

Using an external drive works too, but misses the who point of having a all-in-one IMO. The beauty of the iMac for me and where I want to use it is to just be able to have ONE plug, the power cable, and that is it.

Finally pulled the trigger on a maxed out 21" - thought long and hard about going to the larger screen, but in the end, I don't need it and I'm not even sure I have space. Be a good upgrade from my mid 2007 model anyway and I'll have the newest Mac in the house instead of the oldest :)

New here to MacRumors. Just got my dream machine, 27in reburb imac last week, with the 2.7 i5 a 1tb drive. been using it for about 5 days now and love this thing. Ive always wanted an imac but just never had the $$$. I finally broke down at pulled the trigger, and put the 2005 1.25Ghz mini in retirement.

Congrats, I pulled the trigger too, shaking as I hit the submit button. I will not buy another desktop for a very long time.

Just ordered my first ever mac

To preface, I must say that I really don't use my computer for much - download and watch movies/music, browse the net and edit a photo or two in photoshop once in a blue moon.

I got the 21" version with the below. Can't wait!

Congrats with your first Mac attach!!!! :D

Enjoy the heck out of it!!!!!

Consider getting a Time Capsule unit to generate wifi, provide an IP switch (between any cable or DSL modem and your computer), provide a central USB port (for an USB printer), and provide a 2TB or 3TB hard disk for the Time Machine utility program to use when backing up your new Mac.

Maybe you can put a Time Capsule on your holiday gift list.

Thanks! I've got two external 2tb drives from windows that I hope to be able to use with the mac, so hopefully there'll be no need for the time capsule, especially with my birthday being in october :D

SUPER CONGRATS! I envy that feeling of the first one...

It's like envying people who say they have yet to watch Star Wars or The Godfather... They have so much joy to experience. Haha

I hope it brings you many years of good work and play, no go have a nice, aged glass of scotch and relax in celebration ;)

Congrats on the new/first Mac. I hope you enjoy it.

I have to say that when I switched over, It was a much needed break from Windows. But I have barely used 7 and have never used 8, so I am not sure if there will be as much of a difference for this generation of switchers.

I have never watched more than 5 minutes of either.

Ah the memories....As your external hdds should work with your shiny new Mac, but if you encounter issue, a Time Capsule is a worthwhile investment. I have found that some of the older USB 2 drives that come in enclosures have a firmware "Autopark" feature which means they fail to wake up for Time Machine access.

A buddy next door will be getting his new Imac ( same spec as yours but with 16GB RAM ) next week, and he had been using an old Seagate external drive for Windows backups.

I have formatted it ready for Mac use, but it's slow to wake, making me uncertain as to whether or not it will work with TM. Won't know until he gets his newbie.
