Like CNET said, and through my own experience, some are definitely worse then others.

I had an iPhone 4 with yellow splotching and they replaced it, but I also noticed that the same iPhone 4 with the yellow splotching was much more susceptible to the death grip problem. My new one, has had no yellow spots, even after extensive use and I have held it each and every way possible, watched all the videos on the loss of service, held it exactly as the videos showed, with no problem.

SO, some units have poorer reception then others...what I would do....is go to another Apple Store in your area, they may be more convinced that this is a problem, and replace it on spot.

the 3gs does the same thing and so will any phone with a metal housing.

Then why am I holding my 3GS right now in the EXACT same chair, in the EXACT same manner...and not seeing a singal bar drop from 5 bars for over 2 minutes?

I just really don't want to deal with it anymore. The new features really didn't blow me away so much anyways. I'm a huge apple fan (have a macbook, ipad, 3GS...had 3G and 2G iphones)...but I just don't want to pay $300 and lock myself in for another 2 years with AT&T for a screwy phone. Some users probably have perfect experiences, but I didn't, and wasn't offered any solutions...so I'm switch over to Droid. It's not the end of the world. The new Droid X matches nearly all iPhone 4 features anyways. Oh well...

To the OP

Does it strike you at all ODD that they claimed they knew nothing of the issue but yet then said there was a software fix coming?

Am I the only one that picked up on that part of the story?

So either they are/were aware and not saying anything. Or they have a stock answer of "a software fix is coming"

Either excuse isn't acceptable.

My response was to this...

"the 3gs does the same thing and so will any phone with a metal housing. "

Which just ISN'T true.
If you put your hand over the antenna of *any* phone, especially an all metals one, the signal will be reduced. It's common sense.

So where exactly should I put my hand on the 3GS to lower my signal? I've tried nearly every position now...

Ya, and I think the main thing is that the claim of 30x stronger than plastic, strongest glass ever, is obviously BS.

There is a difference between tensile strength and hardness... I think the claim was that it's 30x "harder", not "stronger"... Glass is by nature, hard but brittle...

I have had an iPhone since the 2007. I have yet to drop it (first gen, 3g, 3gs and 4). I haven't had a difficult time holding onto my phone. If that means you have to be careful, be careful, as one should with an expensive item made of glass. That would be like people getting pissed when their car gets dents after running into something. The only solution to not getting dents is not running into things.

So you sir, give me a break.

accident happens. I had a new car last year. I didnt run into nothing. But one day i came out of a grocery store and found out there is a dent on my door. what you can do with it? **** happens. you never dropped your phone that doesnt necessarily means you will not drop it in the future. no matter how expensive it is, iphone is still a phone. As phone company, apple needs to make their product more durable than just be good looking.

I'm sorry, but this is the most inane issue I've ever heard of with people complaining about Apple. I've had my issues with Apple products and support before, but holy crap. All of these people giving up after only one day with the phone just because of this huge blowup on the internet. I can't believe how impatient and entitled people feel about things these days. How about stop holding the phone like a retard? There are 3 iPhones in my house, and between work and friends I know about 15 other people with iPhone 4. Not a single one of them has had a problem using the phone.

Maybe the reason they said they hadn't heard anything about hands affecting signal is because in the real world, it isn't happening to many people. The software patch they were referring to was already brought up before the phone was released in Walt Mossberg's review, where he found that the bars would be low even though he had a full signal. Apple replied to him that a software patch would enable the phone to report the bars more accurately, but for the moment, the low bar representation is nothing to worry about.

There are people complaining on the internet, but when you compare it to everyone who bought an iPhone 4, it's probably an extremely small percentage of owners.

Has anyone really "returned" their iPhone 4?

Curious, given the abundance of complaints for various reasons, has anyone actually returned their iPhone 4? Not exchange for a replacement, but actually returned it for good given the massive problems they have suffered through.

Or are there folks just waiting for the "fix" first? I think actual returns are a good proxy for actual unhappiness with a product.

Oh, and post receipt or "it didn't happen".

Thanks.

Guess not. Looks like the problems aren't as bad as some make them out to be. Or not severe enough to wait for potential fix.

Good stuff.

If there is not a fix within my 14 day money back guarantee, July 8th then I will be yes.

Reluctantly so tho as besides the antenna issue its a lovely phone.

+1

AT&T gives me 30 days. Looking forward to a fix before the time is up.

Going to genius bar today to see if I can get one of the "perfect" units with no reception issue that apparently alot of people here have. If not, then I'll hold on to mine and wait for a fix.

I am not sure yet, I might return it if the issue is not fixed.
I still have 11 to decide anyway :)

If it's not perfect after the supposed software update, I'll be returning mine withing the 30 days, and picking up another one later in the summer when things are sorted out.

Returning it is no big deal. I can wait a few months.

I have the reception issue, and a no SIM card issue. I won't keep it if that continues. A perfect one in a few months is worth it to me.

If you have the no sim card issue you should be getting ur phone swapped, that's a much bigger problem

*cue crickets

You couldn't take this phone from me if you tried, I love it. And I've bitched about it, but I still love it.

:)

Thanks."

Yeah, that's more like it.
