I will be returning mine to ATT if they don't fix the reception issue by the 30 day return mark. Looks to me like a major design flaw. I'll wait until they release another version of the phone as I cannot see how this can be fixed with a software patch.

I was in an Apple store today and talked with someone who was fed up with the reception issue and gave up his iPhone. He's going to get a Blackberry. He needs a reliable business phone.

I went to inquire about the return and they hooked up my phone to diagnostics and saw it was all messed up. Gave me a new one, which is better, but the issues are still there.

I was going to return today so I can start the work week with a functioning cell, but I'm feeling crazy so I'm gonna let it ride a bit. I still had AT&T make an entry in my account that I called and would be asking for a refund within the 30 day window, not the apple 14 day. They said it would be no problem.

It was a bit funny and sad on Friday to see 100 people begging for 4Gs and being told there are none, and about 5 swapping theirs out while I was there. The swap phones come in reusable packaging with nothing else.

If there is not a fix within my 14 day money back guarantee, July 8th then I will be yes.

Reluctantly so tho as besides the antenna issue its a lovely phone.

This but i'm returning my s/o's phone regardless tomorrow morning.

Apple is 30 days if I'm not mistaken. I just looked it up on their web site.

30 days from date of shipment, whatever that means.

14 days in the UK too if you bought from Apple Store.

I spoke to an Apple store today about this very issue and they did say if i was unhappy it can be exchanged or returned. Problem is an exchange will have the same issue.

I could just about get my head around the £599.99 asking price, maybe even forgive the hassle of needing to get a MicroSIM when no other phone needs it and in time accept although I wanted the white I got the black but for the reply from Apple to be us a case it is not even funny!.

You have to wonder if the problem with making the white one also had part to do with this same issue and is why they have delayed the white ones.

I am seeing how it goes over a few days else i will be looking to buy a new Android phone instead, either the Galaxy S or the Motorola XT720 for nearly £200 less than the iPhone cost and without the issues

Not good Apple.... not good at all

Forget that.

Due to the nature of the problem, you are perfectly within your legal rights to return the product outside of the 14 day window under UK law.

The product isn't fit for purpose if you can't use it in the way that it is intended to be used.

Why is returned in quotes in the title? Why is fix in the second paragraph quoted? Why is "it didn't happen" in quotation marks? What the hell is wrong with this thread?

Looks like real test will be once the 14-day window nears expiration. I would guess about half the people who are Tier 1 complainers will actually return the phone. I'll look forward to seeing some real statistics.

I have 2 of them and they both work fine. Even when I hold the phone with the death grip and the signal drops, my calls are not affected. I guess I am lucky that my phone works as well as my 3GS which had way more dropped calls.
Keeping both phones regardless

Bye Bye iLie

1. I can live with my antenna bars dropping a bit (it does, but not all the way, when I impose the legendary Death Grip)
2. I can live with a little discoloration on my screen (mine doesn't have it)
3. I can live with buying a bumper case - smartphones should be protected (I didn't get the official Apple-sponsored-and-highly-endorsed-you-should-really-buy-this-please-buy-it-we-can't-tell-you-why-just-know-that-it's-important-ok bumper case) and my iFrogz case is pretty cool.

What I canNOT live with is Steve Jobs arrogantly and curtly warding off a valid complaint by someone who trusted Him to unveil an actual working product. As a business owner in Seattle, I would not be able to get away with such a dismissive reply. Mr Jobs, how DARE you tell someone who respectfully asked you for advice, that their issue is a "non-issue"??? You have no business being in business with proud knee-jerk replies like this. When I heard about this, I was ready to bail on Apple right away, period. People don't pledge blind allegiance to you nor do you earn their respect when you flagrantly brush them aside so that more iPhone 4's can be sold. Indeed, "your pride has blinded you to the truth." YOU ARE ARROGANT AND EGOTISTICAL and are in need of a hosedown.

Now with that said, I am a PC brat, but I LOVE the iPhone. It's the single greatest tech device I've ever owned. It's helpful across all fronts: business, entertainment, leisure, navigation, productivity, connectivity, etc.. Better than a LOT of the phones out there, and by a mile. Fast. Responsive. Fluid.

And with THAT said, I am returning my iPhone 4 tomorrow and going back to my 3GS, and here's why:

>>>>> This Over-the-Air B.S. (probably still an issue with the 3GS but oh well)
>>>>> Bluetooth doesn't connect or loses connection suddenly
>>>>> Sluggishness compared to previous models
>>>>> Calendar appointments don't update correctly whereas they did before
>>>>> The massive Facetime privacy concerns
>>>>> The sheer uncomfortableness of this phone (the iPhone 3GS is WAY better in terms of handheld comfort)
>>>>> Battery life is not, in fact, better. I have been using this the same as my old one, to the same extent, with the same drainage. It's not horrible by any stretch, but it's not longer-lasting, for sure.

and finally, coming in at Numero Uno:

>>>>> This "non-issue, hold the phone a different way" crap

You will be the end of your company, Steve Jobs. Every single person who purchased the iPhone 4 deserves a free iPad or MacBook or heck, how about a little respect and a free bumper case, due to your ridiculously brazen reply.

I'm returning mine as well. Two questions.

Did you pay a restocking fee?
Is your ATT eligibility reset?

I bought this in an Apple store, no Restocking fee also you must return before 14 days, and AT&T will reset your contract the way it was b4 you purchased your i4, I just looked into this today luckily my mall has an Apple store right across the hall from an AT&T store so I can kill two birds with one stone.

I have an iPhone 4 on order for my wife, and I'm a little concerned. I am wondering how many people will be returning the phone because of this.

Some reports are stating that the apple sold 1.6 million iPhones, and if 10 or 20% return them, that will be a huge hit.

I think with the increased competition, apple has less wiggle room when comes to mistakes. Their response to this seems to indicate that they're not taking the competition serious, by brushing off people's concerns and anger by telling them to spend another 30 bucks to by a bumper to fix the issue (which it probably won't fix).

My wife and I have both had our iPhone 4's since the day before launch day. We have had no issues, no dropped calls, never lost service, etc. Our iPhones work great. People should stop worrying about the "bars" and just use the iPhone.

Free Country

It's a free country. This particular thread in this forum is ABOUT returning the iPhone 4, but thanks for playing.

Please do return your iPhone, it's clearly not for you. My iPhone 4's Bluetooth works great, calendars sync perfectly, battery is better than my 3GS, and it is faster than my 3GS.

I don't "deserve" anything free from Apple. The iPhone 4 is a great product, works great for me, and I love it.

Bye.

Sure it is

The iPhone IS clearly for me, thanks. The iPhone 4 is the next step which is NOT for me (or for anyone, with Steve Jobs' attitude), and I've come here to express my views. Again, it's a free country. Bye back to you.

I just got back from "returning" my iPhone 4. I put it in quotes only because I still have to ship it in since I bought it on apple.com I went into the store and many reps attempted to convince me to keep it multiple times. I told them that thousands of people online were having the same issue and they claimed to have no heard anything. When I told them it was on NYTimes, CNN, Engadget, etc. they rushed to a macbook in the store to look. I was then told that they were told that a software fix would come out to fix the problem which is the bars just showing up wrong on the UI. I told them it was BS and showed them speed tests that proved it is more than just the bars on the screen. I then told them about Jobs response to "just hold it differently" and they were unaware of that as well, and immediately looked on apple's PR site. Now, I truly do believe that they were playing dumb in order to convince me that it was no big deal.

Since I couldn't return in store, I had to go over to AT&T and have them switch my sim activation back to my 3GS. My iPhone 4 is now inactive and AT&T told me that when Apple receives it, my new 2 year contract will be killed with no fee. If it isn't, I just need to show AT&T proof of return.

I have tried the exact same "death grip" on my 3GS that was killing my iPhone 4's signal, in the EXACT same location as my 4, and it does not kill any bars on my 3GS.

There is no fix coming to the hardware itself according to the apple store.

a lot of people are saying is iOS4 that is killing the signal. Have you tried installing iOS4 on your 3GS and doing the deathgrip in that location?

ios4 on the 3gs

I actually had iOS4 on the 3GS and never had a reception problem whatsoever...it's clearly an issue with the iPhone 4.
