You do not need Target Display Mode. Air Display works just as well, or Synergy Desktop is what I use with my MacBook Neo.

Just buy it my friend. What color are you going to get?
I can't afford one at the moment, but I'd get yellow, 1TB/32GB, the moment I could.

My wife might veto the yellow in favour of blue or green...

I would like to see a modern take on the iMac G4. However, back in those days displays were small and computers were huge. Now it's the other way around so maybe it would probably be a little top heavy.
I'd use my "smaller thing allows cramming more thing into the same big space" argument, but I don't think that would apply to computers

I’ll never buy the Studio Display & mini combo. Ever. I don’t want it and it’s greedy of Apple to try to push people into spending the extra cash.
...and there are plenty of other people who will never buy an iMac when they have the option of a Mini/Studio with a choice of display- plus people who don't want a desktop but will buy a Studio Display as a MacBook Pro dock.

It's hard to deny that the base 5k iMac at $1800 was always the best value-for-money that Apple offered (they've actually shown with the Studio Display that they can sell the display alone for $1600!) - I suspect that Apple were finding that unsustainable, esp. with the desktop marketshare falling (doubly so for Apple Silicon where desktops don't have much power advantage over laptops).

Once Apple made a display that (apparently) they could sell for $1600 to Mac Studio buyers and Mac Pro users and MacBook users who wanted a desktop dock, the prospect of a $1800 Mac Pro with the same display vanished.

Its also notable that a 32GB/1TB/32-core GPU M1 Mac Studio + Studio Display combo - with a storage and GPU bump - came in at $4000, which was exactly the same as the top-of-the-range i9 Intel iMac once you'd bumped the SSD and RAM to match... It was only the lower-end iMac models that would have been more expensive to replace with a comparable Mini/Studio Display combo.

I do like my imac. I have an m1 I inherited but didn't really need. I find I really like having two computers (with my air for mobile work). And the old iMac, which even with only 8GB Ram, can do some basic editing with Resolve. But as it ages...can I justify a new one?

What I really wish for is to bring back target display mode (with physical connection). I feel bad to ditch the thing when the display is still perfect. And it is perfect. Perfect size for me, and to my eyes, looks better than Studio display (I am not a professional color guy). There is a driver board that will work with it, but there's no easy way to install it. I really want an imac display!

I have a yellow, 32 GB / 512 GB! It's fantastic. I love it! Complements my Citrus MacBook Neo perfectly.

customers don't want having a mess of cords.
But the new iMac is more of a mess of cords than the old ones were.

My view is simple: If the power supply is external (and also if the ethernet port is on an external thing), then it isn't an "all-in-one" because "all" is not actually in "one". I love the look of it, I love everything else, but that giant external power adapter with ethernet is an abomination.

I absolutely loved that device. I've owned 4 iMacs and they are the best computers I've ever owned.

Thing is, now I need a monitor that also works with a PC because of remote work. iMacs have lost this feature a few years ago.

Put an M5 Pro or Ultra in the iMac Pro case and take my money*. Chin and bezels and all. (*Unless the price gets cooked past the stratosphere. I'd pass at that.)

Former 27" iMac user here and miss it every day. Currently using a MBP in clamshell with external display.

I am still using a 27" 2012 iMac as effectively my main computer. It is the best computer I have ever owned in terms of user experience. Screen still holds up, the speakers are surprisingly good for built-ins, and I have absolutely zero cords hanging off when my external drives are not plugged in. I previously used a 2020 27" at work and loved it as well. I would definitely take a newer 27" if one was available for very cheap, but I don't really feel like spending much replacing old with old right now, since these are so hard to open up and work on.

I have an M4 MBP 14" as well and it's an excellent computer, but I am a desktop guy above all else. The laptop is only for picking up the slack where the iMac has become too slow or too outdated to complete a task, plus I just needed something portable.

The current iMac does not appeal to me as the screen is too small. For the target audience it is probably fine, but dropping down 3.5 inches in size is pretty severe. Even the older 16:10 24" iMac size would be noticeably better; wouldn't be so narrow feeling. If ever they introduce a larger size, I will likely buy one.

My main gripe with the iMac was the loss of target display mode over a decade ago. I’d easily buy an old M1 iMac or two for use as a monitor, cheaper than the ASD.
Maybe I'm just not remembering properly how Target Display Mode worked, but isn't it possible now to just launch macOS on the target iMac and then on the source Mac, and extend or mirror your display from Display Settings in the source Mac? I thought that could be done via Wi-Fi or USB-C connection on macOS Ventura (or perhaps Monterey?) and above.

Don't mind hearing your opinion.

However you cross the line when you start using "we" instead of "I" and purport to speak for all iMac owners. There are hundreds of thousands of us. So your opinion counts for a minuscule fraction of Apple's customer base.

Nobody has designated you as our spokesperson.

Exactly. I was an iMac owner when they were silver and loved it. I want black bezels not white and in turn helping prove your point.

People who hate on the iMac don't understand that customers don't want having a mess of cords. We don't want black bezels. We don't want boring gray, space gray, or dark gray.

iMac customers are tasteful. We like color that fits into our interior. We love the 24" screen size. It's perfect for what we need. 4.5k resolution?! Are you kidding me?! That's amazing! Remember the days of 15" screens on our iMacs and how we thought those were huge? Absolutely amazing how far we've come.

And the M4 chip is blazing fast. It's essentially a supercomputer chip in a chassis thinner than a lot of laptops. Studio quality speakers that blast music so loud that my neighbors all hate me. But thats ok. Because I have an iMac. And the iMac is the ultimate companion. It does everything I ask for and just looks so dang good doing it.

Does anyone else feel the same way?
As a designer, black bezels are better because they don't distract from the content on the screen. Many people also want the 27 inch iMac back. I think it would be great if they made an iMac that had similar bezels to the Studio Display and throw an M series pro and max chip in there.

My iMac 2012 still serves me well. Despite old macOS it still opens websites fast, is suitable for launching virtual machines, playing old games, I can even make music on it with slightly older version of Logic Pro X. But I am still not convinced to replace it with the newer model.

Overal iPads, iMacs and Apple TVs are devices that I have absolutely nothing against. I hate iPhones despite having only iPhones as my main devices, they are just bad in all terms (modern Android devices are no better either)

That's what I do. I use AirDisplay from my MacBook Neo to extend my display and it works perfectly. I'm not a gamer, but to me it works with no lag.

Sometimes I use Synergy which is a slightly different use case if I need the extra horsepower, which basically allows me to run two computers seamlessly with the Neo's mouse and keyboard controlling both.

I love my boring dark gray iMac Pro. But it's getting old and some of the ports no longer work. I'd replace it with a 27" iMac in a second.

I was actually ready to buy a 27’’ iMac. Yes the device gets slower over time calling for a replacement but the price was pretty sharp compared to all Apple separate components. Then they decided to downsize it which I found to be a horrible decision. So I have ended up spending more buying an ASD, mini, keyboard, mouse.

The color thing is a bit ridiculous (or funny, you never know what people intend online), but otherwise I do agree! Most of my Macs were iMacs until I switched to a Mac Mini and now MacBook Pro because I prefer my own better external display. Space saving also can't be overlooked, even my MBP with external monitor takes up more room and has many more cords than an iMac.

I picked up a second hand iMac M1 a few months ago in green and I love using it. Even having the ethernet in the power brick is nice because it keeps that single cable on the desk. And I agree, the 24 inch screen size is pretty nice and I have used a 27 inch in the past. Apple made a mistake years ago when they started making the iMac larger and more of a Pro device and then eventually a pro device with the iMac Pro. When they adjusted course on the 2013 Mac Pro with the 2019 Mac Pro and than later the Mac Studio and Studio Display they had the chance to bring the iMac back to what it was before, a consumer level device. I remember people for years wanting a headless iMac so they gave us the Mac mini and much later the Mac Studio and now it is the other way around. The most logical thing for Apple would be an all in one Mac Studio but I just don't see that happening.

The current iMac is great… bought one for my parents, clean design, one power cord, and they comment all the time how great/fast it is — they had a large bulky top of the line i7 based Dell tower, slow as molasses, wires everywhere, and finally hit with ransomeware (even though it was always kept updated), they lost a lot of personal info and pictures :-( … however I would like to see a 5k 27” Version (once again) with an M5 (or M6) class chip capable of gaming, 3d animation, video - no limitations on use.

“We don't want black bezels. ” says who? Also why use AI to write this post, in a small website like Mac rumors. Is this engament bait? Really?

I hate cable clutter and like colors, I use windows though.
Been thinking of getting an iMac, but I really don’t like the Mac keyboards or mice, so would definitely use 3rd party accessories.
Waiting for a refresh before deciding though, and I hope they gotten rid of its chin.
