The iMac is amazing!

I bought an M4 iMac (Higher-tier Silver colour model with Dual fan/10 Core GPU & 4x Thunderbolt 4 ports) earlier this year to replace my beloved Late 2013 27" iMac (R.I.P) I would have loved to get an Orange one as it's my favourite colour, but the order time for the higher-end configuration on that was far too long at the time. 🙁

Yes, the screen size difference took some getting used to but after a couple of months I'm perfectly satisfied with the 24" screen. It's also my first ever Apple Silicon Mac and I am impressed by just how capable a computer it is.

I would buy a 27” new iMac, especially if they gave it a M6 and more RAM. I loved my old 27”, had one at the office and one at home. They both died, may they rest in peace.

I have an M3 iMac with 16/512 and I'm very happy with it. Yes, the 4.5K display is very nice. I also appreciate the 6-speaker sound system. My one small quibble is that I wish they would have put the Apple logo on the chin like the previous iMacs, but it's certainly not a deal breaker. I have the Apple Magic Keyboard with numeric keypad and Apple Magic Mouse which I've been content with for years. I actually have two Magic Mice (one from my previous iMac) so if one needs charging I have the other to use if I need it.

I use my iMac primarily for my hobby of 3D modelling and I'm quite pleased with its performance. And I got my M3 from Apple's certified refurb store. Two years on now and no issues.

The only aftermarket accessories I got for it were a Minisopuru pedestal dock and a 2TB Samsung 990 Pro M.2 drive (that fits inside the dock). Nice little setup and I don't have to reach around back to plug anything into the iMac. The dock has USB-C, USB-A, HDMI, standard and micro SD card slots.

I just wish I didn’t need a hulking PC for Steam games. I guess I could just spend 5000 dollars on an ultra gaming laptop.
 
Wait, you’re the guy that almost religiously praised the iMac to their friends.
Has Apple finally given you something in return 😂

I won't buy a 24" iMac, but if they released a 27" iMac, I would make the 2-hour drive (one way) to the nearest Apple store and buy one.

27” iMac is what everybody’s waiting for. That’s why Apples not making it.
Hopefully Ternus realizes that A 27” iMac was popular and people would buy it faster than a 24” iMac

I suppose one sign of the iMac's popularity is how much you see it in advertisements, usually in slightly altered form to avoid copyright/trademark issues. I just saw this one and couldn't help but laugh, a notched iMac from the Intel design. It may be the angle but I think the notch is off-center too, lol

That is hilarious! 😂

Totally hideous. The notch will forever go down as one of those iconically weird design choices, in a similar realm as the mouse charging port.

The notch isn’t off-centre. It’s the page on the screen thats’s off centre.

The iMac bought Apple a bit of time - it's not what turned the tide against Wintel, though.

Internet Explorer was the default web browser on the iMac when it launched, Safari didn't even exist on MacOS 9 and Chrome was nearly a decade away.

IE was killed by a perfect storm of:
  • Wilfully poor standards compliance
  • Google Chrome beating MS at its own "leveraging a dominant position in another market" game.
  • Microsoft missing the post-iPhone smartphone boat, so websites had to support more standards-friendly browsers like mobile Chrome and Safari. That's Apple's main contribution to the death of IE.
  • The rise of Linux as a backend server for web applications instead of MS tech like OLE/ActiveX
  • The original MS Edge - supposed to be the modern replacement for IE - being a flop & abandoned (the current MS Edge is completely different and based on Chromium).
  • Anti-Trust actions - if only by raising awareness.

...at some point, I guess that all Intel Macs will get relegated to their own section, following in the footsteps of PowerPC and Core Duo. (I guess 68k pre-dates this site...)

That clock starts ticking with the release of Golden Gate without Intel support.

Apple almost certainly do market research on these things. If they thought that a 27" iMac would be a cash cow, they'd make one.

As I've said before, I've nothing against a 27" iMac as long as it doesn't come at the expense of the Mini and Studio range. However, past performance by Apple - who are their own biggest competitor - suggests that it would.

But thats ok. Because I have an iMac. And the iMac is the ultimate companion. It does everything I ask for and just looks so dang good doing it.

Just fired up my 2002 iMac G4 (ILamp) after 24 years and it's working flawlessly !! What a machine ! Brings back fond memories of my youth. I'm 61 yoa

its just a quick render i did in ChatGPT. It needs some refining. Im thinking, squatter base, throw in some USB C ports AND A POWER BUTTON and put FaceID in the bezzle like the ipads.

Refined with a smaller base, usb C ports, power button, etc. The back would also have 4 USB Ports as well but those dident render in this for some reason. I also told it to put the FaceID in the bezzle but CHATGPT Got lazy on that one.

I was daydreaming in the shower this morning, about a design for a future iMac that is inspired by the much loved G4 design, and uses a Mac mini in the base for the compute module. This would allow a user to upgrade their iMac at will as new Mac minis are released. It would also let people run the Mx Pro in an iMac.
