Or the simpler explanation is that they have thrown a couple of people in each country and they are totally, totally overwhelmed as it really requires a far better base and thousands of full time staff, because nobody at Apple is going to spend any money sorting this **** out.

Why does it require thousands of full time staff? Look at OSM. Google Map Maker. And while Google may have hundreds or even thousands of members of staff working on maps how many are (or have ever been) actually involved in editing the map?

The core data in Maps is fine. Sat Nav works brilliantly and is vastly superior to Google maps. The problem is POIs and the search engine.

POIs - lack off, location and prioritisation. Clearly there was a huge **** up when they imported the POI data. In some areas it seems as simple as they used wrong coordinate system. Basic errors but this is all relatively easy stuff to fix. Once Mavericks is launched, the 10.9 app will probably gain more sophisticated controls like OSM, Google map maker etc. Judging by the comments in this thread the search engine is vastly improved in iOS7 (and no doubt will continue to improve).

When Apple Maps was released last year, my friend and I went all around my town adding and editing businesses and POIs, moving inaccurately placed pins, and snapping photos for Yelp.

So what's changed in the last year from all this effort? Nothing. Pins that we've moved 50 times are still in their incorrect location. My town's new swimming pool is still not on the map despite us adding it multiple times. Even an old lake that no longer exists is still marked on the map.

My friend and I could have completely mapped the whole town, but we gave up because none of our edits ever made it to the map.

I'm guessing you live in the UK. :D

Are towns & villages classed as POIs?

There are lots of errors with these on the maps local to where I live and I would think of them as the core data for any map.

Well, maps are an online service, so there's still a chance they are just holding up till the iOS 7 release and as soon as iOS 7 is publicly available, they'll just push a button and present us the fixed map data with up to date POIs, incorporating all those reports we've been sending them for the last year. Including my pet issue, the factory closed 11 years ago.

Don't hold your breath....like I said previously and along the lines of what was just said above, I think Maps will be treated as a separate item outside of the "visual" updates that go along with iOS7.

Can't wait to see what happens after the app is released with Mavericks...a PC version probably won't be far behind as well as editing capabilities...which can then be verified by the new staff.

There is no point in continuing to do minor corrections if they have a larger database correction coming from an outside company.

Anyone else experiencing hot phone and/or battery drain while running Waze?

It's the only app that seems to have this issue...and only showed up for me after GM was loaded.

Hmmm...during the betas, female Siri was the default for turn-by-turn even if I selected male Siri.

Used Maps this afternoon in Dallas (ran perfectly by the way) and male Siri provided turn-by-turn.

Did that start with public release or did I just miss it before?

I remember at least beta 6 had this. I'm curious, why no male UK voice for Siri? Hope it comes soon..

I would even pay for an up to date Apple maps. My city is still about 5-6 years out of date.

Still a far nicer app than googles, so much smoother.

2 major issues though, that it needs to load faster and it needs to go in further. i zoom in so far and theres no data.

Also on a side note the maps themselves look a bit blurry and washed out. A nice modern vibrant high res image should be here. They need to work on it.

is there an option for the iOS 7 to open a different Map app other than Apple map app?

The issue is really how to integrate mapping data used by all of the third party apps. The number of possible configurations needed would drive developers bonkers.

Of course, that is what drives a lot of users crazy since they feel they can't even trust or in some cases use a third party app to track running or cycling since the proper data is not there.

Of love the consistency of having Apple Maps everywhere and it has worked extremely well for me in the USA.

found it!

I don't know if this answers my question but I found on another thread that while you're in Apple map, if you click on the location info you wanted to go to and select Transit Directions, it will give you actually optional Map app to use like google map or navigon if you have them on your iPhone. ;)

????

Been that way since iOS 6 a year ago...I've always used HopStop and love it. So glad that Apple bought them and hope it will be integrated without the extra step soon. Just used it to get my train info while here in Boston. :)
