And it says the IPad Air 3 will be only 5mm thin in the articles.

OH GOD WHY??

Absolutely. Other than being nerdy cool, the thinness brings nothing but disadvantages with poor battery life.
Samsung pretty much is destroying the Galaxy Tab S line by giving it a shorter battery life each generation all to be a fraction thinner. No one I know even cares about thin tablets but everyone always wants a longer battery life.

There are rumours that the new IPad Air 3 will be even thinner at 5mm from 6.1mm(IPad Air 2).

I have the IPad Air 2 and for me the IPad Air 2 is already thin enough at 6.1mm thin because if they go any thinner than that there are going to be even more bending issues, bendgate well there are already bending problems with the Air 2(I seen users having the bending issue on this forum and on the Internet)

And all so I don't really want Apple to shrink the battery capacity again just like they did with IPad Air 2 and lose some of that legendary 10 hour battery life.

So what do you think everyone?? Do you the IPad Air 2 is already thin enough? And lastly how much thinner can tablets get???

I really really really can't imagine tablets getting thinner then they are now.
I think.......you should focus on your iPad air 2...take care of it like it is your kid. Otherwise, someone might call CPS on you for neglecting. Anything thinner than and you'll be talking about bend-gate.

I don't see the big deal. The next iPad should be thinner and lighter. Not sure how they'll figure out the sound and vibration issues though.

Cool. The thinner and lighter it is the better, although weight loss is more important than thinness but I welcome both. If it wasn't for Apple's drive to be thinner then we'd all be lugging tablets this size instead.

People saying 6.1 mm is thin enough, wait until bendable screens/devices come out at 1.5mm!

People have been believing this one for years now. Sure, you can make a flexible sheet of OLED screen material, but none of the other components of these kinds of devices are even close to ready for this. Batteries, chips, etc... it's just not going to happen anytime soon. Best case scenario with current tech you'd get a mildly flexible, slightly lumpy device that feels like a melting chocolate bar. Or a flexible screen attached to a narrow bar of "solid" components.

All the demos we've seen for this tech always have a cool flexible screen cabled to a box full of components.

meh... really a piece of paper is also super flat and dull. What will mater is what it can do specially if ithas pencil support.

My old Mini 2 would go 3 days before needing a charge. The Mini 4 can barely make it through 2 days. When I owned the Mini 2, I never even thought about the remaining battery power, but with the Mini 4 I check remaining power all the time.

Useful; disappointing info, but useful post! I really like the Mini 2, especially the side switch! Long battery life, good screen, We have both an iPad Air and Air 2 in the house right now--and the lack of the rotation switch is really my biggest complaint about the 2!

I'm with the thicker is better crowd! Bigger battery, longer run time; front facing stereo speakers, louder richer volume; better center of gravity, better to hold; etc. I chuckled over the photo of the larger device in the thread... but really wouldn't something closer to it!

On the plus side, our tablets would be running Windows XP :-D

my Air 2 is already too thin. i cant hold it properly without the smart case. i dont get their obsession with thinnes while selling bulky original cases that add twice the size (exaggergated) like those iPhone cases anyway. more battery!!!

nothing but disadvantages... besides, you know, making the device EASIER TO HOLD

Yes, ergonomics is a key point. However, ergonomics via thinness gets diminishing returns as you get ever thinner. At some point, the center of gravity relative to your hands, and thus indirectly the width and height begin to contribute more to the ergonomics. This is why I want smaller bezels - not simply for aesthetics, but for more substantial gains in ergonomics.

Of course, battery life should not be compromised. If you look at the Samsung Galaxy S2 reviews, they compromise on both the battery life and CPU power to win the "thinness" / ergonomics metric against the iPad Air 2... generally not a worthwhile tradeoff.

Weight and battery life is what they should work on over the coming few versions and thinness a 3rd priority. iPads should be good for 2x current battery life and weigh around 10 oz and be 5mm thin in about 2 years. the weight reduction would result in less chance of damage from falls which means thinner cases would protect better. An Ipad with a smart case could use a 1mm reduction... But that is the absolute end to where I think it would be annoying to hold. I hated the thin iPod touch that had sharp edges, unusable it was so awkward to hold.

This is exactly what the iPad lineup needs, sales-wise. -_- A more expensive tablet (people already don't feel like spending 500-600$ on these, for what they do) that is even thinner with worse battery life, worse vibration issues, and worse screen distortion problems.

Another thought - 5mm?? The headphone jack was already starting to be cut into at 6.1mm. If they go through with a 5mm iPad, they will have to do away with the headphone jack... That will NOT go well with anybody! "Oh, you have to buy a $50 lighting to 3.5mm headphone jack converter so you can actually use headphones. Oh, and you can't charge while using headphones, and there will be this solid plastic charging Apple pencil-esque design."

Don't do it, Apple.

Something else occurs to me. Besides a thicker iPad carrying a longer-lasting battery, it could also have internal cushioning to provide even greater protection from falls!
