The iPad is "magical and revolutionary"...they'd probably burn you as a witch if you tried to use it at church.

I use mine as I do any other available resource to prepare, teach & preach at church. The majority of preparation time is spent on my iMac and then a final outline is prepared as a Word document that I email & save on the iPad. I read the focal text from my Bible then refer to my outline on the iPad as needed whether in Sunday School or in the pulpit. I have an Apple cover and most people in the pews have no clue it isn't a simple paper folder. My daughter uses one in the congregation with no problems, as she has used her "iPhone Bible" for a few years now.

I have used my iPHone for years in church and now use the iPad. It's great and people don't give me any bad looks (they actually always ask questions and think its cool). So much easier to find what verse they are on and you can bookmark for later, I love it.

Everyone should have a copy of Religulous on their iPads when they take them to church :)

lighter and easier to read

I haven't weighed a full-sized bible, but I think an iPad is lighter. It's certainly easier to read than a bible on an iPhone or PalmPilot when there's low light indoors or during evening services.

You also have to remember to turn the screen brightness down low enough so as not to blind your pew neighbors.

^^ Look at that gear list! Doesn't the bible teach something about living meekly? How much does this pastor gig pay? Maybe I'll try to be "found" or "saved" or whatever the hell they call it too!

Once I find an app that I like for surfing and taking notes I will certainly be bringing it to church with me. I am normally horrible about taking notes in church, but in know with the ipad it would help me keep up with the notes better.

So I need pages and an awesome bible app, or even better just an awesome bible app with note ability

BibleXpress will let you make footnotes on each verse you are looking at. In addition you can make Folders, Notes and Bookmarks on the scriptures. As a backup feature you can email all your Folders, Notes and Bookmarks to yourself to restore if you have re-install the app or on another iPad if you like.

The Program comes with alot of translation that you can switch rather quickly through a wheel selection.

A Bit pricey $29.99 but I found it to be most helpful for what I needed. Since the ipad is such a draw as others have noted, I complied folders dealing different aspect fo Christianity with verses and notes associated with those topics.

Hopes this helps.
The pad in church is a natural I would like to see E-sword adapted to the pad it is one of the best bible utilities on the web.

Who said I'm a pastor. I teach & fill in whenever needed as a speaker, but I'm not financially supported by the church. I won't apologize for working hard & being successful.

I used to be on the worship team at my church (stepped off because the time commitment got to be too much), and I still volunteer at a Christian summer camp where, during evenings, we'll play songs around the campfire that range from your typical camp fare ("The ants go marchin' two by two", etc.) to more contemporary Christian songs. As such, I am excited about the possibility of using an iPad as a digital chord book. OnSong is an app that caught my attention.

I also intend to use a digital Bible, because, to be honest, I keep forgetting my real one at home.

I think the answer to the OP's question of "is it appropriate?" depends entirely on the culture of the church you go to. Is it appropriate to wear shorts to church? Some yes, some no. Same deal.

Even if you were a succesfull pastor you wouldn't have to apologize either. Good for you having all that awesome stuff

Now back to ipads in church

I rarely go to church, but when I've gone, I have hesitated to use the Bible on my iPhone because it may look as though I'm texting or emailing.

The iPad however is shaped like a book. Everyone can see the screen and know that you are worshipping with the Holy Bible app :D

I have yet to attend church since getting the iPad, but would feel okay using it there. Would you?

i wouldn't concern myself with the perception of using an iphone bible looking like texting/emailing. if someone else around me wants to make a big deal out of it, that's his problem, not mine.
i took my ipad to church last week, other than a friend taking a look at the ipad in general, no one cared.

Of course! It's the perfect size, you can change the fonts unlike a real bible and it rests on your lap. You wouldn't be bothering anyone. Don't listen to people who say you will look silly because they are not you! You go with what makes you happy ok? I think it's an awesome idea. Make sure you take it in a case and be careful with it.

Enjoy Sunday! :)

I took my iPad to church last Sunday. It was awesome! So easy to follow along. I used the ibook version of the bible, being able to highlight and bookmark the bits and pieces was very helpful.

I used the dictionary function a lot too...just to clarify some words.

I plan on taking my iPad to church every Sunday now. 8). The experience was just awesome.

I am actually at church right now for sunday rehearsals. (waiting for a group leave before the rehearsal starts. It's like a private session going on right now)

**I am part of the sound crew that is in control of the soundboard.

I am 56 and F, I see no problem reading the bible on the iPad at church.

I attend both a smallish Baptist church and a large more formal Presbyterian church.

I, too, am one of those that don't know my books of the bible and can never find the passage in time.
