I, too, am one of those that don't know my books of the bible and can never find the passage in time.

Incidentally, my church recently switched to using a (Mac based) worship presentation package called ProPresenter to handle all of the on-screen slides, instead of PowerPoint. We love it. One of the features is the ability to quickly look up scripture passages and create slides out of them to display on the screen. As one of the A/V guys, it is great fun to play with. A speaker will mention a passage, impromptu, and be very surprised when the verse is on-screen just seconds later!

If you do decide to use it in chuch, just remember to keep your eyes open when praying. You don't want a backseat parishioner taking it! ;)

I have always used my Ipod Touch in church since its easy to find bible passages quickly and never got any crazy looks. I do intend to take my Ipad instead now right now I use the free edition of You Version NKJV.

Can I give you a crazy look outside of church...like the one I have right now when I realized people actually do this...have electronics during church?!

Depends on the church, but I don't see why not as long as it's not disruptive to others.

The only reason you don't use an iPhone or iPad in, say, a movie or theatre is because the light, sounds, etc. would annoy other people -- otherwise, you wouldn't really care what the guy in front of you is doing. On the other hand, a church service is a bit more like a lecture hall where there is audience participation in the form of either note-taking, looking things up, answering or asking questions... and you wouldn't bat an eye at people bringing iPads or laptops to a lecture.

Perhaps some people still have a rather stuffy image of church where everyone's all hushed, wearing suits and ties and listening to organ music. Most churches nowadays are a lot more relaxed.

Agreed!

At my church people bring their laptops and iPhones to read the bible and take notes. I'll definitely bring my iPad the next time I go.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_1_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7E18 Safari/528.16)

I really like the Logos bible iPad app. I've been debating taking my iPad to church as well. I often use a Bible app on my iPhone while at church. But, I do worry that people who are not technically savvy might think I'm just goofing off during the service.

But, one thing I came to realize was that I don't go to church to impress others or socialize. I go to learn about and worship God.

Although Logos is a very good app I would love to see quickverse develop an iPad and iPhone app.

Ipad Preacher

I'm a full time pastor and for 26 years as an Army chaplain I printed out my sermons, used those as notes and filed them in binders. Now I've switched over to converting them to PDF and installing via Good Reader (via Google docs). I used it for the first time last Sunday and loved it. Besides, it saved me ink, space and killing trees to print. If your church doesn't like you using your Ipad to read the bible, take notes...you're invited to come to mine. :)

My pastor said we couldn't use iPads in church because they bother the snakes.

if my pastor says that, i'd be out the door and i'd go find a new church, or at least, attend a different service that has a different pastor.

I've been taking my iPad with me to church the last couple of weeks, and it has not been a distraction at all. I have mine in the apple case and using e free ESV Bible right now. It's so nice being able to go right to a verse without flipping through pages.

What I really like is being able to highlight verses, take notes during the Bible exposition, and easily bookmarking.

What free ESV Bible app are you referring to? I've been looking for one that does not require web access.

Everyone who's mentioning iPhones need to stop. The topic is iPads. iPhones are of course no distraction. They fit in your pocket. The iPad is much much bigger and will be seen much easier by those next to u and behind you.the iPhone has nothing to do with this conversation. Use the iPad in church. Nothing is wrong with this. Eventually the world will adapt if we are still here and somebody has to start it off. If people think you are showing off.....SO BE IT!! Consider them Microsoft fans. They are obviously stuck in the past like them.

Jack and Max are walking from religious service. Jack wonders whether it would be all right to smoke while praying.

Max replies, "Why don't you ask the Priest?"

So Jack goes up to the Priest and asks, " Father, may I smoke while I pray?"
The Priest replies, "No, my son, you may not! That's utter disrespect to our religion."

Jack goes back to his friend and tells him what the good Priest told him.

Max says, "I'm not surprised. You asked the wrong question. Let me try."
And so Max goes up to the Priest and asks, "Father, may I pray while I smoke ?"

To which the Priest eagerly replies, "By all means, my son. By all means. You can always pray whenever you want to."

Moral of the story is ... The reply you get depends on the question you ask.

:D But yeah, at least Steve Jobs writes back.

No. You'd look like an idiot, IMO.

You may look like an idiot just much as the first person to bring a book to church in the days when everyone else used scrolls.

In other words, it will be a temporary situation.
Anyways, I'm getting an iPad so I could take notes, and have all kinds of reference books handy at meetings, church, etc., so consider this a 'transition stage'.

The day will come when you may look like an idiot for bringing a book and not an iPad-like device.

I love Apple as much as anyone but I don't bring toys to church. I go to church to worship the lord not showoff with an ipad. A bible is convenient enough for me at church.

We use ProPresenter too. It works great.

A Pastor's view

I'm a pastor and have both the Iphone and the Ipad. I now use the Ipad to hold my sermon notes, plunk it on the pulpit with my apple case. So you're welcome to come to my services and Ipad to your hearts content.

One young lady we had was busily thumbing away at her phone during the sermon (which I didn't care either way) and she came up to me afterwards and showed me that it was easier for her to take notes on her phone using her texting thumbs (!). Again, I didn't care either way if she was texting her friends or not- that's on her.

I think you having an Ipad in church is just great. Imagine being able to take notes, quickly go over to a web site to check a word or phrase, find a geographical location (the Valley of Elah if you like David and Goliath), or whatever.

Go for it.
