And the NGP is just a psp with better graphics, and the 3DS is just a DS Lite with greated capabilities and graphics and 3D. Actuslly wait... Or the psp was just a portable ps2 with downgrades graphics.

And that right there tells me that you don't quite get it. Leaving aside the apps that are iPad specific (and thus represent functionality that the iPod doesn't necessarily have) the size of the screen and the capabilities of interacting with iOS on a larger screen are what give the iPad greater functionality. On the other hand, the pocket sized nature of the iPod gives it greater functionality, in a different area. So, by no means do the iPad and iPod have equal functionality.

As I suggested above, while features may be roughly equivalent, functionality differs between the two. And that's a great thing. Choose the one that gives you the functionality that you need.

Uh, actually it is not a failed argument. You've made the point for him. The size sets them apart, and that size difference means that you, in general, use them for different things. Could you take a bath in a swimming pool? Sure. Could you move from one end to the other of a bathtub kicking your legs? Uh, maybe. But in either case, it would be less practical. So, yes, an iPad and an iPod share a lot in common, but their size difference makes them distinctly different tools.

Here's another one for you:

And the Mississippi River is just a big stream.
It is a failed argument when people seem to think that because one is bigger than the other, they share nothing in common and get all offended when somebody says "an iPad is just a large iPod touch"...

Ah, but the whole premise of the statement "an iPad is just a big iPod Touch" is that it is exactly the same thing with exactly the same uses, just bigger. I've dealt with people who take this attitude. That's why the swimming pool/bathtub analogy works so well. Yes, a swimming pool is, more or less, just a big bathtub, but you can use it for different things that would be impractical/impossible to use a bathtub for. The same can be said for the iPad vis-a-vis the iPod.

So, perhaps you are saying that the premise of "an iPad is just a big iPod Touch" is the failed argument...?

The iPad is just a big iPod Touch,

I hate people who actually say that , because they think they do the same thing, Now we have the iPad 2,

What would be your come back?

The original iPad and iTouch were not the same. The iPad Touch had a camera. :p

The new iPad 2 looks super cool!

Ok, so list things that I can do on my iPad that I can do on my iPhone? List functions/features that have nothing to do with the iPad's larger viewing area though (as I have already admitted and/or agreed that it's "larger" by stating it's a "larger" iPod touch).

The problem with you and other people like you is that you are just too darn sensitive or insecure in your ways in for thinkingthe term a "large iPod touch" is an insult. Guess what, I'll get getting in line at 3pm on Friday to get one. Why? Because it is a "larger iPod Touch". Beyond size, there is zero difference and I'm cool with that. I want a larger device to read on. I'm certainly not expect anymore than that.

Yes in many ways it is, that's a good thing.

The iPod Touch is just a small iPad ...

I'd say "yes, yes it is. So?"

I couldn't disagree more. I used to say that the iPad was just a big a&& iPhone 4, until into one. Yes, so what if it is an over sized iPhone ornipod touch? That's a plus on top of the things that differentiate it from the latter! All I can say tonthe cynics is- go get one, and you'll find it is an oversized idevice, and so much more. :p

No matter how you want to turn it, the iPad and the iPad 2 ARE nothing else but iPod Touches with large screens. It's the same OS and the same technology, the only difference --IS-- the larger screen. Or would you honestly tell somebody that a 27" iMac is a completely different computer than the 17" iMacs were just because its screen is so much larger?

Yes, you can run software on a bigger screen that would be horrendous to use on a small screen -- but that still doesn't change the fact that the screen size is the ONLY significant technical difference between the two devices.

I owned an iPad, an iPod Touch and I still own an iPhone. Of those three gadgets, ONLY the iPhone is a device that I actually find useful and of which I would say that it feels "complete". The iPad is the ONLY purchase that I ever regretted within the first week - I returned it to Apple after four days because the thing was such a huge disappointment and not really good for anything at all.

The iPad is an expensive toy looking for a purpose. The iPod Touch can at least be used as a movile mp3 player and even as a navigational system (with a GPS cradle).

But what's the iPad good for? Reading comic books in the house? Playing Plants vs Zombies and Shredder Chess HD? I guess that's about it: The iPad is really good for board games.

But I tell you what. Chances are that I will buy an iPad 2 this year. Why? Because it is an iPod Touch with a large screen and I am seriously considering to write a game for the iOS platform.

I'm not sure why calling the iPad a big iPod touch is an insult. I found myself using my iPhone to surf the web more than my laptop, so clearly I'm a fan of the iOS experience. Getting it on a bigger screen is good.

Does the iPod Touch have 3G? Is it dual core? Can it run GarageBand? Oh, and is the screen 10 inches? Screen size is sort of a big deal when it's also the primary control interface.

So what if it's bigger ipod???

Do people call 15 inch latop just bigger version of 10 inch laptop? It is.. but people do not say that... people have different taste and needs..

I happen to own both ipod touch and will be getting ipad 2.. I-touch(i know i know) is great on the go.. and ipad is great if you want to sit down....

Well, first off, I'm far from insecure about my iPad. What I was trying to address is that most of the time when someone says "The iPad is just a big iPod Touch", they do mean it as an insult. Their clear implication is that the bigger screen isn't worth anything.

I had an iPod Touch for two years before the iPad came out. I found it to be an immensely useful tool. When the iPad came out, I was quite dubious about it's usefulness. There was exactly one purpose which I saw that it would be useful for, and when I was given an opportunity to get one as a gift, I decided "what the heck." Once I had it and had the opportunity to use it, I found that it was much useful than my iPod. The screen size made the difference. The ability to type. The ability to see web pages far more easily. Yes, all of this is related to it's screen size, but that's the point.

Yes, from a strictly hardware standpoint, the iPad is an iPod Touch with a bigger screen. But, for the exact same reason calling a swimming pool a big bathtub missed the utility and functionality of a swimming pool, calling an iPad a big iPod Touch misses the utility and functionality of the iPad.

To people such as yourself who acknowledge that the larger screen size is a benefit, such that when you make a comment likening the iPad to a big iPod you aren't intending to be insulting, this whole discussion is moot. But most people who make such comments mean it as a dismissal of the iPad as having no more functionality than an iPod regardless of screen size.

Until they update iOS with more tablet specific enhancements then yes, it's a big iPod Touch.

I'm REALLY hoping iOS 5.0 brings something to the table.

So will we get an Ipad Nano in the future? Hahaha

But see thats the thing. An iPod Nano is an inferior iPod Touch, it isnt just a small iPod but an inferior one. On the other hand an iPod Touch is literally the same as an iApad with the apps and capabilities thats why unless Apple evolvesit will be overtaken Inpreeict by Microsoft again or maybe Google. Look what happened in the Winows vs Mac OS days.

Ha ha... Grumpy Gryzor is on another time out!!!

Wonder what he said this time...

well, the ipod touch has cameras.. the ipod touch has a gyroscope... uh.. it is. A faster, and with the screen space, more versitile large iPod touch, but still.

The iPad is just a big iPod Touch. And John Holmes just has a big .......

The defensive reaction is because people often use the diminutive 'just'. Consider someone who says "It's just a big iPod Touch". When called on this, the response is often 'hey man, I'm stating facts, it's a big iPod Touch', omitting the dismissive term. Then they turn it around and spew something like 'why are you getting so upset at my statement of facts? You must have issues with your purchases and feel insecure and herp derp'.

It's the difference between saying 'the MacBook is a laptop' and 'the MacBook is just a laptop'. One's a factual claim, the other is usually a weaselly sneer disguised as a factual claim.

Jesus christ. Some companies sell bricks, or even rocks for a living. Why the hell does it matter if Apple sells what they think will sell?

I think that the sentiment was expressed in a statement by an acquaintance of mine when the iPad was demonstrated by Steve Jobs last year. He said, "So, the iPad is just a big iPod Touch: it sounds like Apple is out of ideas". His was a statement of derision, and he has eaten much crow since then. :)

People who say this is so lame, if that's the worst thing you can say about the iPad then clearly it's a pretty damn good device! What would be bad about that if it was true?

It's not an inaccurate saying.

Just the implication behind it is a bit unfair.

The internals are very much the same, so is the base OS.

The size of it though, allows the OS and apps to be designed for more functions.

*shrugs*
