Because the point isn't to run macOS on an iPad, but do rethink those aspects for an iPad where it makes sense and optimise those features for a touchscreen.
I don't see macOS coming to the iPad but I can definitely see Touch and Pencil support coming the Mac, especially now that macOS Tahoe will be the last version of macOS to support Intel Macs.

Hi, can someone with the beta checks the following for me, please :
1. Files : can we finally set different view/sort options for different folders (e.g. Download sorted by "latest" and Documents sorted by "name").
2. Preview : can we finally zoom out past the window size to show a whole PDF page in landscape mode?

Thank you for your answer!

I just told my last Lightroom photo editing session that it was YouTube or games but it didn't believe me.
Yeah of course. Another guy also reads PDFs on iPad, believes it is a most professional work out there :). There is also a guy who records beats on iPad using his Garageband and then makes hits. I am in awe with all these genius professional applications on iPad, believe me. iPad is most professional device on Earth, no doubt

Oh, allow me to brutally disagree!
Can you use MS Word on an iPad? Yes. Is it as good as using Word on a Mac ten years ago? No, not even close.

Maybe, for you, writing a document is a "power-user geek" feature, but for me, a word processor is a pretty basic computing function.

I have a very poor opinion of Apple Computer these days. Their management does not understand the Steve Jobs message AT ALL. If Steve did a keynote today, and I stood up and said, "Hey Steve, selecting text for copy/paste is really difficult to do on an iPad an iPhone," he would agree, and he'd do something about it. The guys running the show now are obsessed with how thin the device is, what wallpapers it includes... but they really drop the ball on basic usability in so many ways.

I'm hoping this new iPad OS is the rock star we want it to be. I'd love to be proven wrong. Let's see how well Copy/Paste works, or whether word processing gets any better.
The OP wasn't talking about writing documents in Word, they specifically mentioned using an iPad "like a Mac for Parallels and development environments. Those are TOTALLY outside of what "normal" users do, and fall under the category of Power User features.
My point stands.

iPadOS 26 supports the following iPad models:
  • iPad Pro (M4)
  • iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later)
  • iPad Air (M2 and later)
  • iPad Air (3rd generation and later)
  • iPad (A16)
  • iPad (8th generation and later)
  • iPad mini (A17 Pro)
  • iPad mini (5th generation and later)
Really already dropped support for the M1 IPad Pro how ridiculous.

No one said it's the most professional work out there, don't be so dramatic.

Who are iPads intended for?

Even the iPad Pro?

And now with windowing like a desktop OS?

You sure you have the pulse of "who they are for"?
The features Apple introduced in iPadOS 26 are certainly welcome and will be used more by power users and less so by everyday customers.

How do I know? For 14 years I taught computer skills classes to "regular folk" (retirees, blue collar workers and non-geek business owners and professionals) who have neither the inclination nor the time to get deep into the "tech weeds". The just want their computers to help them accomplish basic tasks (emailing, word processing, photos, gaming, basic creative activities, watching video, etc.) and are not particularly interested in the more esoteric, higher complexity functions that nerds and power users love.

Since purchasing the IPad M4 last year, surprised at how the device has largely relegated my MacBook to a paperweight. I do have a Mac Mini M4 and an older Intel machine, but the MacBook scenario is only if I need both portability and power.

There still have been many things that have gone wanting in iPad OS (the M4 is fast - but it’s been held back - more like Usain Bolt running the 100 meter carrying a 50 pound rock :).) This looks promising. Someone please tell me the finally addressed allowing background apps to continue to play audio. Listening to Spotify and opening Safari then have the music killed sort of reminds me….maybe not ready to mothball that MacBook just yet. Looking forward to this update ….

Sarcastic fail there my friend. Just becuase you can’t do it doesn’t mean others can’t.

One would hope that Microsoft would, but they seem to prefer to keep the most features for Windows. I have been using the 13" iPad Pro as a notebook replacement for some time, but as of to this date, Apple iWork is better than Microsoft 365 on the iPad.
MS Office also exist for macOS, and while it has not all features from the Windows version, is far more capable than the iPadOS version. Could it be because of limitations of the current version of iPadOS? If that's the case, maybe iPadOS 26 removed or reduce those limitations, resulting that developers improve their applications, making them closer to full desktop apps. We'll see what happens in the next few months / years.

I am a power user and yet, I use an iPad as a replacement for a MacBook and have done so for a little over fourteen years.
Does it mean that every power user could replace their MacBook or Windows laptop with an iPad? I don’t think so. There are plenty of scenarios where power would find iPads too limited their workflow.

That’s on Microsoft. Complain to them. There are plenty of decent word processors on the iPad.

Thats because Microsoft doesn't want it to be as good as on a Windows computer.
Apple can't make Microsoft improve their apps.
Microsoft have no issues improving MS Office for macOS or Windows. Could it be that iPadOS is more limited compared to Windows and macOS?

Black magic can manage a pro grade video sequencer, Adobe manages a feature parity version of Lightroom. Affinity manage an entire suite designed to create. All desktop quality stuff, and just the tip of the iceberg. If Microsoft can’t manage a word processor - I pretty sure that’s on them.

they finally freakin did it!!! Just look at my comments from past years about this - and I was proven correct!!! About damn time!!
First, dual boot was never and is still not the answer.

Second, people have wanted Mac features on iPad forever, but it wasn’t always practical. Improvements in battery tech but more so chip efficiency were likely necessary in paving the way for these features to get onto iPad without taking too big of a hit on iPad’s already modest battery life. Frankly, even now I’m skeptical battery life will be good.

Also it probably took time to figure out which features the mainstream needed and the best way to implement them. Devil is in the details. And iPad is probably not done evolving.

ONE AUDIO APP AT A TIME DISGUSTING!
Not even labeled multi-media usage as it can only do one media at a time!

It makes the exact same amount of sense as an iPad with a keyboard and trackpad/mouse.
I agree there is a bit of inconsistency, but the iPad having a keyboard makes more sense than a Mac having touch because
1) iPad is touch UI, and using keyboard and pointer on a touch UI is a much better UX than using touch on a keyboard and pointer UI (unless we’re talking about redoing Mac software which is a whole other thing)
2) A physical keyboard is more critical for productivity than touch input, so it’s more necessary to add the keyboard to iPad than to add touch to Mac. If there is going to be compromise, it should be for good reason.
3) Apple put the trackpad on the Magic Keyboard because of the poor ergonomics of touch with keyboard, so one doesn’t really need to use touch with the keyboard.
4) If you do want to use touch with the keyboard, the keyboard area being shorter and the cantilever design brings the iPad much closer to the user to be able to use touch more comfortably.

So the iPad with keyboard is a compromise, but it’s a more sensible compromise than a touch Mac would be.

Now with new menus, i hope that ipad office apps such as powerpoint, etc will have more features that are similar to those of desktop versions.

I wonder if the new multitasking is deep enough that apps no longer have to be written to specifically take advantage of the feature. I still regularly use a few apps that are not available in side by side and only run full screen. It would be another game changer if any app runs in a window with no restrictions.
